Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

    What are Evergreen Ornamental Grasses?

Evergreen ornamental grasses are plants that keep their leaves throughout the year. These grasses are perfect for adding structure and texture to a garden. They are known for their ability to stay green even in winter, making them a popular choice for gardeners looking for year-round interest. Some well-known types include Carex, Festuca, Luzula, Ophiopogon, and Liriope. These grasses are often referred to as non-deciduous ornamental grasses or all-season ornamental grasses because they do not shed their leaves in autumn. Evergreen ornamental grasses are used in gardens for various purposes. They provide a lasting green effect and are ideal for creating a low-maintenance landscape. These grasses are perfect for adding winter appeal and structure to garden beds. They are also great for borders and can be used to create a natural-looking garden. With their leaf-retaining qualities, they offer a consistent look throughout the year. Whether you are looking for the best evergreen grasses for structure or low-maintenance options, these grasses are a versatile choice for any garden.

Features of all-season and winter-hardy grasses

Evergreen ornamental grasses are a popular choice for gardens due to their year-round appeal. These grasses grow in clumps, spreading slowly over time. They can reach a width of up to 1 metre, providing a lush, full appearance. The development of evergreen ornamental grasses begins in early spring, with new shoots emerging as temperatures rise. By summer, they reach their full height, maintaining their structure through winter. The blooming period for these grasses varies, often occurring in late summer to early autumn. Factors such as climate, temperature, and soil quality influence their flowering. In milder climates, they may bloom earlier, while colder regions might see later blooms. Proper care and soil preparation enhance their flowering potential. The colour of evergreen ornamental grasses is typically a rich green, though some varieties may have hints of blue or silver. Soil type, light exposure, and climate can affect their colour intensity. Regular maintenance ensures vibrant foliage throughout the year. While not known for strong scents, some evergreen ornamental grasses may have a subtle fragrance, especially when brushed against. This can add a sensory element to the garden, attracting beneficial insects and enhancing biodiversity. Mature evergreen ornamental grasses can reach heights of 0.5 to 2 metres, depending on the variety. Their height and structure make them ideal for creating visual interest and layering in garden design. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care will ensure they thrive, offering a lasting evergreen effect.

Evergreen ornamental grasses are a popular choice for adding structure to gardens. These non-deciduous ornamental grasses have leaves that vary in shape, colour, and texture. The leaves can be narrow or broad, with colours ranging from deep green to blue-green. The texture can be smooth or slightly rough, depending on the species. These grasses retain their leaves throughout the year, providing a consistent green presence even in winter. Factors like species choice and climate influence their leaf retention.

These grasses are known for their winter hardiness. Hardy evergreen ornamental grasses can withstand cold temperatures, but their resilience depends on factors like the duration of frost, wind exposure, and soil conditions. Choosing the right type for the local climate is crucial for ensuring they thrive during colder months.

Evergreen ornamental grasses are indeed green all year round, unlike most perennials that shed leaves annually. The choice of species and the garden's location play a role in their evergreen nature. They are well-suited for climates with mild winters and can maintain their foliage in various conditions.

These grasses are also heat and drought-tolerant. Originating from regions with dry climates, they have developed features like deep root systems and waxy leaf coatings to conserve moisture. This makes them ideal for gardens with limited water availability.

In terms of safety, evergreen ornamental grasses are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They pose no danger when used in typical garden settings.

Evergreen ornamental grasses contribute to biodiversity by providing shelter and food for wildlife. Their long-lasting foliage offers habitats for insects and small animals, supporting the garden's ecosystem. These grasses enhance the garden's resistance to pests and diseases, promoting a balanced environment.

Where to plant evergreen grasses for winter structure

Evergreen ornamental grasses are a great choice for adding structure and texture to a garden all year round. These year-round green garden grasses are perfect for creating a lasting impact, even in winter. Here are some ways to use evergreen ornamental grasses in the garden:

    • Border: Use evergreen ornamental grasses to create a defined border in the garden. They provide a neat and tidy look throughout the year.
    • Group planting: Plant these grasses in groups for a lush, full appearance. This is ideal for creating a focal point in the garden.
    • Solitary: A single clump of winter-hardy decorative grasses can serve as a striking feature in any garden setting.
    • Hedge or screen: Use these grasses as a natural screen to provide privacy and wind protection.
    • Pot or planter: Evergreen ornamental grasses thrive in pots, making them perfect for patios or balconies.
    • Underplanting: These grasses work well as underplanting for trees and shrubs, adding texture and interest.
    • Windbreak: Plant them as a windbreak to protect more delicate plants from harsh winter winds.
    • Insect corner: Create a biodiversity zone by planting grasses that attract beneficial insects.

Consider these options when looking to buy evergreen ornamental grasses for a garden that remains vibrant and structured all year long.

Pairing evergreen grasses with seasonal colour

Evergreen ornamental grasses are a great choice for adding structure to a garden. These non-deciduous ornamental grasses can be combined with various plant types to create stunning displays. For example, pairing evergreen ornamental grasses with colourful perennials like Echinacea or Rudbeckia can provide a vibrant contrast. These all-season ornamental grasses also work well with shrubs such as Hebe or Berberis, which offer year-round interest. The combination of evergreen ornamental grasses with these plants is visually appealing because the grasses provide a backdrop that highlights the seasonal colours. Year-round grasses like these are low-maintenance and offer a hardy structure that supports other plants. Winter grasses, in particular, maintain their foliage, adding texture and interest even in colder months. Choosing the best evergreen grasses for structure ensures a garden remains attractive throughout the year. These leaf-retaining grasses are perfect for creating a year-round green effect, making them ideal for those seeking low-maintenance options. By incorporating wintergreen grass types, a garden can achieve a balance of colour and structure, enhancing its overall appeal.

Soil and aspect preferences for year-round interest

Evergreen ornamental grasses, also known as year-round green garden grasses or winter-hardy decorative grasses, thrive in various light conditions. They prefer full sun to partial shade, which helps maintain their vibrant colour. Factors like location and surrounding plants can influence light exposure. These grasses are generally wind-resistant, but in very exposed areas, a windbreak can be beneficial to prevent damage. The ideal soil for evergreen ornamental grasses is well-draining and fertile. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they allow roots to breathe and absorb nutrients. Regular fertilisation supports growth, ensuring the grasses remain lush. Soil moisture is crucial; these grasses prefer consistently moist conditions but can tolerate short dry spells. Wind and sun exposure can affect moisture levels, so mulching can help retain soil moisture. Evergreen ornamental grasses favour a neutral to slightly acidic pH level. Soil pH can be influenced by rainfall and the type of soil. Testing the soil can help determine if adjustments are needed to maintain the ideal pH. These grasses are perfect for adding year-round structure and appeal to any garden.

Planting and spacing evergreen grass varieties

Evergreen ornamental grasses can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls, it's best to plant in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. When considering plant spacing, the type and size of the grass at planting time are important. Fast-growing varieties may need more space, while slower-growing types can be planted closer together. The number of plants per metre is usually listed on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for evergreen ornamental grasses. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Before planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. After planting, water the grasses thoroughly to help them establish. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks. These non-deciduous ornamental grasses provide year-round structure and appeal, making them a great choice for any garden.

Care for Hardy Evergreen Ornamental Grasses

Evergreen ornamental grasses are a great addition to any garden, providing year-round structure and beauty. Proper care ensures they thrive and maintain their appeal.

    • Watering: Evergreen ornamental grasses need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Water deeply to reach the roots.
    • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead foliage and encourage new growth. Use sharp shears for clean cuts.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth. Follow the package instructions for the correct amount.
    • Dividing: Divide grasses every 3-4 years in early spring to prevent overcrowding and rejuvenate the plant. Carefully dig up the clump and separate it into smaller sections.
    • Winter Protection: Most evergreen ornamental grasses are winter-hardy, but a layer of mulch can protect roots in extremely cold areas.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Water thoroughly after moving to help the plant settle in its new location.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider the option to buy evergreen ornamental grasses for a lasting green effect.
