Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Features of earth-toned and rustic brown grasses

Brown flowering ornamental grasses are a stunning addition to any garden. These earth-toned ornamental grasses grow in clumps, spreading gracefully to fill spaces with their warm hues. They can reach a width of up to 60 cm, creating a lush appearance. The development of brown flowering ornamental grasses begins in early spring. They start as small shoots and gradually grow taller, reaching their full height by late summer. These grasses are perfect for autumn gardens, as they maintain their colour well into the season. The blooming period for these grasses is typically from late summer to early autumn. Factors like climate, temperature, and soil quality can influence their flowering time. In cooler climates, they may bloom later, while warmer areas might see earlier blooms. The bloom colours of brown flowering ornamental grasses range from copper-toned to chestnut brown. Soil type and sunlight can affect the intensity of these colours. Well-drained soil and full sun exposure often result in the most vibrant hues. While not known for a strong scent, these grasses can add a subtle earthy aroma to the garden. The leaves and stems contribute to this gentle fragrance, enhancing the garden's biodiversity. At maturity, brown flowering ornamental grasses can reach heights of 1 to 1.5 metres. Their height makes them ideal for creating layers in the garden, adding depth and interest. They pair well with other warm-coloured grasses and plants, making them a versatile choice for gardens with brown colour accents.

Brown flowering ornamental grasses are a stunning addition to any garden, offering a unique blend of earthy tones. The leaves of these grasses can vary in shape, often long and slender, with a rich brown hue that can range from chocolate to chestnut. The texture is typically smooth, but some varieties may have a slightly rough surface. These grasses usually retain their leaves throughout the winter, adding interest to the garden even in colder months.

When it comes to winter hardiness, brown flowering ornamental grasses are generally resilient. They can withstand low temperatures, but prolonged frost can be challenging. The choice of species, wind exposure, and soil conditions all play a role in their ability to survive winter. In terms of being evergreen, many of these grasses keep their foliage year-round, depending on the climate and location.

These grasses are also known for their heat and drought tolerance. Originating from regions with dry climates, they have adapted well to withstand high temperatures. Their deep root systems and sometimes waxy or hairy leaves help conserve moisture, making them ideal for gardens with less water availability.

Brown flowering ornamental grasses are non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They pose no danger when used in typical garden settings. Additionally, these grasses contribute positively to biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for various insects and animals, supporting a balanced ecosystem. Their long-lasting blooms and native-like qualities make them a valuable addition to any garden focused on sustainability and natural beauty.

Garden uses for brown ornamental grasses in contrast planting

Brown flowering ornamental grasses are a great addition to any garden, offering a unique and warm touch. These earth-toned ornamental grasses can be used in various ways to enhance the garden's appearance. Here are some ideas on how to incorporate them:

    • Border: Use brown flowering ornamental grasses to create a striking border. Their warm tones provide a beautiful contrast against green foliage.
    • Group Planting: Plant these grasses in groups to form a cohesive look. The chestnut-coloured garden grasses blend well with other autumn-toned plants.
    • Solitary: As a solitary plant, brown ornamental grasses can serve as a focal point in the garden, drawing attention with their unique colour.
    • Pot or Planter: Place them in pots or planters for a versatile option that can be moved around the garden to suit different designs.
    • Privacy Screen: Use these grasses as a natural privacy screen. Their height and density can help create a secluded garden area.
    • Insect Corner: Create a biodiversity zone by planting brown flowering ornamental grasses, attracting beneficial insects to the garden.
These grasses are perfect for creating an autumnal look with their copper-toned and rusty hues. Consider adding them to gardens with brown colour accents for a warm and inviting atmosphere. For those looking to buy brown flowering ornamental grasses, they are an excellent choice for adding earthy tones to any garden.

Pairing with soft or neutral-toned plants

Brown flowering ornamental grasses can create stunning combinations in the garden. These grasses, with their chocolate-hued and rustic brown tones, pair beautifully with soft or neutral-toned plants. Consider combining them with silver-leaved plants like Artemisia or Stachys. The contrast between the earthy tones of the grasses and the silvery foliage creates a striking visual effect. Another option is to plant them alongside pale pink or white flowers, such as Echinacea or Gaura, which highlight the warm-coloured grasses. These combinations work well because the brown ornamental grasses add depth and texture to the garden. Their autumn-toned hues complement the soft colours of other plants, creating a harmonious and balanced look. Brown-flowering grasses for autumn gardens are particularly effective in borders, where they can be used to create a backdrop for brighter blooms. The best grasses for warm tones also provide interest throughout the year, as their colour changes with the seasons. Gardens with brown colour accents benefit from the addition of these grasses, as they bring a natural and cohesive feel to the space.

Site and soil needs for brown flowering grasses

Brown flowering ornamental grasses thrive in full sun. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily to show their best colours. If planted in partial shade, the colours may not be as vibrant. Wind can affect these grasses, so planting them near a fence or wall can provide protection. These grasses prefer well-drained soil. Sandy or loamy soil types are ideal. Adding compost can improve soil quality and drainage. Regular fertilisation helps them grow strong and healthy. Soil moisture is important. While they like well-drained soil, they also need consistent moisture. Too much wind or sun can dry the soil quickly, so mulching can help retain moisture. Brown flowering ornamental grasses prefer a neutral to slightly acidic pH level. A pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is best. Testing the soil can ensure the right pH level is maintained. These grasses add a warm, earthy tone to gardens. They are perfect for brown-flowering gardens and borders, creating a beautiful autumn-toned display with their copper, chestnut, and tobacco-coloured hues.

When to plant and how to position brown grasses

Brown flowering ornamental grasses can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with roots or clumps, the best time is spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The plant spacing for brown flowering ornamental grasses depends on the type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the grass, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially in dry periods. These chocolate-hued feature grasses add a rustic touch to gardens with brown colour accents, creating a warm, earthy tone. They are perfect for autumn-toned gardens and brown-flowering borders, offering a copper-toned, tobacco-coloured charm. Brown ornamental grasses thrive in sandy-coloured flowering borders, enhancing the natural beauty of any garden.

    Maintenance for Brown Ornamental Grass

Brown flowering ornamental grasses add a unique touch to any garden. These earth-toned ornamental grasses require specific care to thrive. Regular maintenance ensures they remain healthy and vibrant.

    • Watering: Brown ornamental grasses need moderate watering. Check the soil; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Early morning is the best time to water, ensuring the soil is moist but not waterlogged.
    • Pruning: Prune brown ornamental grass in late winter or early spring. Use sharp shears to remove dead or damaged stems, promoting new growth. Pruning helps maintain shape and encourages healthy development.
    • Fertilising: Fertilise in early spring with a balanced fertiliser. This supports growth and enhances the earthy tones. Apply once a year, following the package instructions for quantity.
    • Dividing: Divide every 3-4 years in early spring. This prevents overcrowding and rejuvenates the plant. Carefully dig up the clump, separate it into smaller sections, and replant.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, add a layer of mulch around the base to protect roots from frost. This helps maintain the plant's health through winter.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Water thoroughly after moving to reduce stress and encourage establishment.
For those looking to enhance their garden with these unique plants, consider the option to buy brown flowering ornamental grasses to add a touch of chestnut-coloured elegance.
