Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Characteristics of sun-bright and sunshine-toned grasses

Yellow flowering ornamental grasses, also known as golden ornamental grasses or sun-bright garden grasses, are a stunning addition to any garden. These grasses grow in clumps and can spread to create a beautiful display. They are perfect for sunny borders, providing a bright and cheerful look. The development of yellow flowering ornamental grasses begins in early spring. They start as small shoots and gradually grow taller, reaching their full height by summer. These grasses thrive in well-drained soil and need regular watering to maintain their vibrant colour. The blooming period for these grasses is typically in the summer months. Factors such as climate, temperature, and soil quality can affect their flowering time. In warmer climates, they may bloom earlier, while cooler temperatures might delay their flowering. The flowers of yellow flowering ornamental grasses come in various shades, including pale yellow, lemon yellow, and golden yellow. The specific colour can depend on the type of grass, soil conditions, and the amount of sunlight they receive. These grasses are not particularly known for their scent, but they do add a subtle fragrance to the garden. The leaves and stems can sometimes release a mild aroma, especially when brushed against. At maturity, yellow flowering ornamental grasses can reach a height of up to 1.5 metres. Their height makes them ideal for creating layers in the garden, adding depth and interest. They are versatile and can be combined with other plants to enhance the overall look of the garden.

Yellow flowering ornamental grasses are a stunning addition to any garden. These grasses, also known as lemon-hued decorative grasses or sunshine grasses, have unique leaf shapes and colours. The leaves can be narrow or broad, with shades ranging from pale yellow to mustard-coloured. The texture of the leaves can vary, with some being smooth and others having a more textured feel. In winter, some of these grasses may lose their leaves, depending on the species and climate conditions. The winter hardiness of yellow flowering ornamental grasses depends on several factors. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost and strong winds can affect their survival. The soil condition also plays a role; well-drained soil helps protect the roots from freezing. These grasses can be evergreen or deciduous. Some species keep their leaves year-round, while others shed them annually. The choice of species and the local climate influence this characteristic. Yellow flowering ornamental grasses are generally heat and drought-tolerant. Their origin and leaf structure, such as a waxy coating or fine hairs, help them retain moisture. A deep root system allows them to access water from deeper soil layers, making them resilient in dry conditions. These grasses are non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They pose no danger when used in normal gardening practices. In terms of biodiversity, yellow flowering ornamental grasses support garden ecosystems. They provide food and shelter for insects and small animals, enhancing the garden's resistance to pests and diseases. Their long-lasting blooms and native-friendly properties make them a valuable addition to any garden with yellow colour accents.

Best companions for yellow ornamental grasses

Yellow flowering ornamental grasses can be beautifully combined with a variety of plants to create a vibrant garden. These grasses, also known as lemon-hued decorative grasses or sunshine grasses, add a bright touch to any garden. Pairing them with purple salvia or blue fescue creates a striking contrast. The deep purple of the salvia highlights the sunny yellow of the grasses, while the blue fescue adds a cool tone to the mix. Another great combination is with red hot pokers, which bring a fiery touch to the garden, complementing the golden yellow hues of the grasses. For a softer look, consider pairing with pale yellow daylilies or mustard-coloured coreopsis. These combinations not only enhance the visual appeal but also attract pollinators, making the garden lively. Yellow ornamental grasses for sunny borders are perfect for adding colour accents, and their versatility allows them to fit into various garden styles. Whether in yellow-flowering gardens or yellow-tinted borders, these grasses with golden flowers are sure to brighten up any space.

Soil and sun exposure for vibrant yellows

Yellow flowering ornamental grasses thrive best in full sun. These golden ornamental grasses need at least six hours of sunlight daily to maintain their bright yellow hues. Partial shade can dull their colour, so a sunny spot is ideal. Wind can affect these sun-bright garden grasses, causing damage to their delicate flowers. Planting them near a fence or hedge can provide some protection from strong winds. The ideal soil for yellow flowering ornamental grasses is well-draining and rich in nutrients. A mix of sand and loam works well, ensuring the roots do not sit in water. Regular fertilisation helps maintain their vibrant colour. Soil moisture is crucial; too much water can lead to root rot, while too little can cause wilting. Ensure the soil is moist but not waterlogged, especially in sunny conditions. These grasses prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level, around 6.0 to 7.0. The pH affects nutrient availability, so testing the soil can help in adjusting it to the right level. Adding organic matter can help balance the pH and improve soil structure, promoting healthy growth of these ornamental grass with yellow flowers.

Planting yellow grasses – tips for best results

Yellow flowering ornamental grasses can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The distance between yellow flowering ornamental grasses depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the grass, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially in dry periods. Lemon-hued decorative grasses add a sunny touch to gardens with yellow colour accents. Sunshine grasses thrive in yellow-flowering borders, creating a bright ornamental display. For a garden with yellow-tinted borders, these grasses offer a light yellow to mustard-coloured palette, enhancing the overall aesthetic.

Care for Ornamental Grass with Yellow Flowers

Yellow flowering ornamental grasses add a bright touch to any garden. Proper care ensures they stay vibrant and healthy.

    • Watering: These grasses need regular watering, especially in dry periods. Check the soil; if it's dry, water thoroughly in the morning or evening.
    • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead growth. Use sharp shears for clean cuts, promoting new growth.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring. This helps maintain their golden hue and supports growth.
    • Dividing: Divide every 3-4 years in spring to prevent overcrowding and encourage healthy growth.
    • Winter Protection: In colder areas, mulch around the base to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: Best done in spring or autumn. Water well after moving to help them settle.
