Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application

Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Brown flowering perennials are plants that bring a unique touch to any garden. Characteristics of chocolate, chestnut and soil tones

Brown flowering perennials, also known as earth-toned perennials or chocolate-coloured perennials, are unique additions to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading widely to create a full, lush appearance. They can range from compact clumps to more sprawling forms, depending on the species and growing conditions.

The development of brown flowering perennials begins in early spring when new shoots emerge. As the season progresses, these plants grow steadily, reaching their full size by late summer. The growth rate can be influenced by factors such as soil quality, sunlight, and water availability.

These perennials typically bloom in late summer to early autumn. The exact timing can vary based on climate, weather conditions, and the plant's age. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil can encourage earlier blooming, while cooler climates may delay it.

The bloom colours of brown flowering perennials range from chocolate brown to chestnut and even tobacco-coloured hues. The specific shade can depend on the plant variety, soil composition, and light exposure. Proper care and maintenance can enhance the vibrancy of these earthy tones.

While not all brown flowering perennials are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a subtle fragrance. This can be influenced by the plant's foliage, stems, and flowers. The intensity of the scent may vary, adding a unique dimension to the garden's biodiversity.

At maturity, brown flowering perennials can reach varying heights, often between 30 to 90 cm. The final height depends on the species, care, and placement within the garden. These plants can be used to create layered effects, adding depth and interest to brown-flowering gardens and borders.

Brown flowering perennials, also known as chestnut-hued garden plants or rustic brown perennials, offer unique beauty to any garden. The leaves of these plants can vary in shape, colour, and texture. They often have earthy tones, with some displaying copper-toned or chocolate brown hues. The structure of the leaves can be smooth or slightly hairy, which helps in retaining moisture. In winter, some brown flowering perennials may lose their leaves, depending on the species and climate conditions. These perennials are generally hardy, but their frost sensitivity can vary. Factors like temperature, wind exposure, and soil conditions play a role. In colder climates, choosing the right species and providing protection during frost periods is essential. Many brown flowering perennials are not evergreen and will shed their leaves annually. This is influenced by the plant type, climate, and location in the garden. When it comes to heat and drought resistance, these plants can be quite resilient. Their origin, leaf structure, and root system contribute to their ability to withstand dry conditions. A deep root system and a waxy leaf coating can help them survive in less moist environments. Brown flowering perennials are generally safe for gardens with children and pets. They are not toxic and can be handled safely during gardening activities. These plants also support biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for insects and other wildlife, helping to maintain a balanced ecosystem. Their long-lasting blooms and earthy tones make them a valuable addition to gardens with brown colour accents.

How to use brown perennials in naturalistic designs

    • Insect Corner: These perennials attract beneficial insects, promoting biodiversity in the garden.
For those looking to buy brown flowering perennials, these plants are ideal for gardens with brown colour accents, offering copper-toned, rusty hues that complement any landscape. Consider adding brownish flowering perennials for autumn gardens to enjoy their warm, earthy tones.

    Companion planting for earthy effect

Brown flowering perennials can create a stunning effect in the garden when combined with other plant types. These chestnut-hued garden plants pair beautifully with copper-toned grasses, adding texture and movement. Consider mixing rustic brown perennials with sandy-coloured flowering borders for a harmonious look. For a striking contrast, plant them alongside blue or purple flowers, which highlight the earthy tones of the brown perennials. Examples of beautiful plant combinations include pairing brownish flowering perennials for autumn gardens with silver-leaved plants like Artemisia. This combination enhances the rustic charm of the garden. Another option is to plant autumn-coloured perennials with deep green foliage plants, creating a lush backdrop that makes the brown flowers stand out. These combinations work well because they bring a sense of warmth and depth to the garden. The earthy-tone flowers blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings, creating a cohesive and inviting space. Gardens with brown colour accents offer a unique and sophisticated look, perfect for those seeking a more understated yet elegant garden design.

Best soil and position for brown flowering plants

Brown flowering perennials, also known as earth-toned perennials or chocolate-coloured perennials, thrive in various light conditions. They prefer full sun to partial shade, depending on the specific variety. Factors like the plant's location in the garden and surrounding structures can influence light exposure. These perennials are generally not wind-sensitive, but if planted in open areas, consider using windbreaks like hedges or fences to protect them. The ideal soil for brown flowering perennials is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth, ensuring vibrant blooms. Soil moisture is crucial; these plants prefer consistently moist soil but can tolerate short dry spells. Wind and sun exposure can affect moisture levels, so mulching helps retain soil moisture. Brown flowering perennials favour a slightly acidic to neutral pH, around 6.0 to 7.0. Soil pH can be influenced by factors like rainfall and the type of organic matter used. Adjusting pH with lime or sulphur can optimise conditions for these plants. Incorporating brown perennials into brown-flowering gardens or brown-flowering borders adds unique earthy tones, enhancing gardens with brown colour accents.

Planting times and steps for muted tones

Brown flowering perennials, like chestnut-hued garden plants, can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots. Avoid planting during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Consider the plant type, size, and growth speed when deciding on spacing. The number of plants per metre is usually listed on the product page. Proper soil preparation is key for rustic brown perennials. Loosen the soil and mix in compost for better growth. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, and water well. After planting, ensure regular watering, especially in dry periods. This helps the plants establish in gardens with brown colour accents. Brown-flowering gardens benefit from earthy-tone flowers, adding a unique touch to brown-flowering borders. These copper-toned and chocolate brown plants create a stunning effect in any garden.

    Maintenance of Brown Flowering Perennials

Brown flowering perennials, also known as earth-toned or chocolate-coloured perennials, add unique beauty to gardens with brown colour accents. Proper care ensures these plants thrive in brown-flowering gardens.

    • Watering: Brown perennials need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly.
    • Pruning: Prune brown flowering perennials in late winter or early spring. Use sharp tools to remove dead or damaged stems, promoting healthy growth.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Follow package instructions for quantity, ensuring not to over-fertilise, which can harm plants.
    • Dividing: Divide perennials every 3-4 years in early spring. This prevents overcrowding and encourages vigorous growth.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base of plants in late autumn to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Water well after moving to reduce transplant shock.
For those looking to enhance their gardens with brownish and earthy tones, consider adding copper-toned or rusty hues to sandy-coloured flowering borders. To explore options, buy brown flowering perennials to create stunning brown-flowering borders.
