Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Show more
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Key traits of mandarin, copper and tangerine blooms

Orange flowering perennials are a vibrant addition to any garden. These bright orange perennials grow in various forms, often reaching a spread of 30 to 60 cm. They develop from small shoots in spring, gradually forming lush foliage. By summer, they reach their full height, showcasing their fiery perennials' beauty. The blooming period for orange flowering perennials typically occurs from late summer to early autumn. Factors like climate, temperature, and soil preparation play a crucial role. Warmer climates and well-drained soil encourage a longer blooming season. Proper care and maintenance also ensure healthy growth. The blooms of these perennials come in a range of orange shades, from mandarin-toned to copper orange. The specific colour can depend on the cultivar and soil conditions. Adequate sunlight and a balanced climate enhance their vibrant hues. While not all orange flowering perennials are known for their scent, some varieties offer a subtle fragrance. This can be influenced by the plant's age and the environment. The scent adds an extra layer of interest to gardens with orange colour accents. Mature orange flowering perennials can reach heights of 60 to 90 cm. Their height makes them ideal for warm orange borders and gardens, providing a striking visual impact. Choosing the right location and care ensures they thrive, adding a splash of colour to any garden setting.

Orange flowering perennials bring vibrant orange flowers to any garden. These fiery perennials have leaves that vary in shape and colour, often with a glossy or textured surface. Some have deep green leaves, while others may show a hint of copper orange or apricot-coloured tones. In winter, many orange perennials lose their leaves, but some retain them, depending on the species and climate. Winter hardiness is crucial for orange flowering perennials. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost and strong winds can affect their survival. Choosing the right type and ensuring good soil conditions can help them thrive. Most orange flowering perennials are not evergreen, shedding their leaves annually. This cycle depends on the plant type and the local climate. In warmer regions, some may keep their leaves longer. Heat and drought resistance are important for these plants. Originating from warmer climates, they often have a waxy leaf surface or deep root systems to conserve water. Adequate soil moisture and protection from harsh winds can enhance their resilience. Orange flowering perennials are generally safe for gardens, posing no risk to children or pets when used normally. They contribute to biodiversity by attracting pollinators and providing habitats for various creatures. Their long-lasting blooms and insect-friendly nature support garden ecosystems, making them a valuable addition to any garden with orange colour accents.

Colour combinations that pair with orange

Orange flowering perennials bring a vibrant touch to any garden. These fiery perennials can be beautifully combined with various plant types to create stunning displays. Consider pairing them with blue or purple flowers, such as salvias or agapanthus, to create a striking contrast. The cool tones of these plants enhance the warm orange blooms, making them stand out even more. For a harmonious look, combine orange perennials with yellow or red flowers. Sunflowers or red hot pokers can complement the orange tones, creating a warm and inviting garden space. Additionally, foliage plants like silver-leaved artemisia or dark-leaved heuchera can add texture and depth to the garden, highlighting the vibrant orange flowers. These combinations work well because they balance the intensity of the orange perennials. The contrast with blue and purple creates a dynamic visual effect, while the harmony with yellow and red offers a cohesive and warm appearance. Using foliage plants adds interest and ensures the garden remains attractive even when the flowers are not in bloom. Orange flowering perennials are perfect for adding a splash of colour to late summer gardens or brightening up borders with their fiery orange hues.

Best growing conditions for orange flowers

Orange flowering perennials thrive in full sun, needing at least six hours of sunlight daily. This ensures vibrant orange flowers and healthy growth. Partial shade can be tolerated, but too much shade may reduce blooming. Wind can affect these fiery perennials, so planting them in sheltered spots or using windbreaks like hedges can help. The ideal soil for bright orange perennials is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation supports growth, especially in gardens with orange colour accents. Soil moisture is crucial for orange perennial flowers. They prefer consistently moist soil, but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry the soil quickly, so mulching helps retain moisture. Orange flowering perennials prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels, around 6.0 to 7.0. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting pH can enhance growth. Incorporating these conditions ensures a stunning display of mandarin-toned perennials in any garden.

Planting bright orange perennials – when and how

Orange flowering perennials bring vibrant orange flowers to any garden. These fiery perennials can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate affect planting success. When considering plant distance, the type and size of orange perennials matter. Smaller plants need less space, while larger ones require more. Growth speed and the number of plants per metre also influence spacing. Check the Heijnen product page for specific plant properties and spacing details. Proper soil preparation is crucial for orange perennial flowers. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. This helps the roots establish and supports healthy growth. For planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, and water thoroughly. After planting, regular watering is essential, especially in dry periods. This ensures the perennials with orange flowers thrive and add warm orange blooms to the garden.

    Caring for Orange Perennial Flowers

Orange flowering perennials bring vibrant colour to any garden. These bright orange perennials require specific care to thrive. Regular maintenance ensures healthy growth and stunning blooms.

    • Watering: Orange perennial flowers need consistent moisture. Water early in the morning to prevent evaporation. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly.
    • Pruning: Prune mandarin-toned perennials in late winter or early spring. Use sharp tools to remove dead or damaged stems, promoting new growth and better air circulation.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Repeat every 6-8 weeks during the growing season. This supports vibrant apricot-coloured blooms.
    • Dividing: Divide fiery orange perennials every 3-4 years in early spring. This prevents overcrowding and encourages healthy growth.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, cover peach blossom perennials with mulch to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: Transplant copper orange perennials in early spring. Water well after moving to reduce transplant shock.
For those looking to enhance their gardens with orange colour accents, consider adding these stunning plants. To explore options, buy orange flowering perennials for a warm orange border.
