Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Show more
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

What defines purple flowering prairie plants?

Purple flowering prairie plants are a stunning addition to any garden. These plants, known for their vibrant hues, include species like Verbena, Liatris, and Monarda. They are often referred to as deep purple meadow blooms or rich purple prairie plants. These plants are not only beautiful but also attract pollinators, making them ideal for bee gardens. In gardens, purple flowering prairie plants are used to create striking purple flowering borders and add purple colour accents. They can be found in various shades, from light purple to deep purple, and even lavender-coloured or lilac tones. These plants are perfect for those looking to add long-flowering purple wildflowers to their garden. Violet wildflowers, such as Echinacea and Salvia, are popular choices for creating a garden with purple colour accents. These plants thrive in well-drained soil and full sun, making them a versatile choice for many garden settings. Consider adding flowering prairie plants to enhance the beauty and biodiversity of your garden.

Traits of deep purple grassland and steppe flowers

Purple flowering prairie plants, also known as violet prairie flowers or lavender-hued grassland plants, are a stunning addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading widely to create a beautiful display. They can form dense clusters or spread out, depending on the species and growing conditions. The development of purple flowering prairie plants begins in early spring. They start as small shoots and gradually grow into mature plants by late summer. The growth rate can vary based on soil quality, sunlight, and water availability. These plants typically bloom from late spring to early autumn. The exact blooming period depends on factors like climate, temperature, and care. Warmer climates may see earlier blooms, while cooler areas might experience later flowering. The blooms of purple flowering prairie plants come in a range of shades, from light purple to deep violet. The colour intensity can be influenced by the plant variety, soil type, and sunlight exposure. Proper care and maintenance can enhance the vibrancy of the flowers. While not all purple flowering prairie plants are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a pleasant fragrance. The intensity of the scent can depend on the plant's age and environmental conditions. At maturity, these plants can reach varying heights, often between 30 to 90 cm. The final height is influenced by factors like location, care, and plant variety. They are perfect for creating layered effects in gardens with purple colour accents.

Purple flowering prairie plants are known for their unique leaf shapes and colours. The leaves can vary from light green to deep green, often with a smooth or slightly hairy texture. These plants may lose their leaves in winter, depending on the species and climate. Some retain their foliage, adding interest to gardens year-round. Winter hardiness is crucial for purple flowering prairie plants. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost and strong winds can affect their survival. Choosing the right species and ensuring well-drained soil can enhance their resilience. While some purple flowering prairie plants are evergreen, others shed their leaves annually. This depends on the species and the local climate. In milder regions, they may remain green throughout the year. These plants are generally heat and drought-tolerant, thanks to their deep root systems and sometimes waxy or hairy leaves that reduce water loss. Originating from prairies, they are adapted to withstand dry conditions. Purple flowering prairie plants are safe for gardens with children and pets. They are non-toxic and can be handled without concern. These plants play a vital role in biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for insects and birds, supporting a balanced ecosystem. Their long flowering period makes them ideal for bee gardens, attracting pollinators and enhancing garden health. Incorporating purple flowering prairie plants into gardens can create stunning purple flowering borders and add vibrant colour accents.

Using purple flowers in layered natural gardens

Purple flowering prairie plants can add a stunning touch to any garden. These plants, also known as violet prairie flowers or lavender-hued grassland plants, are perfect for creating a vibrant and diverse outdoor space. Here are some ways to use them in the garden:

    • Plant in borders to create a striking purple flowering border that adds depth and colour.
    • Use as group plantings or mass plantings to form a sea of purple, enhancing the garden's visual appeal.
    • Place as solitary plants to serve as focal points with their unique purple hues.
    • Incorporate into hedges or as a boundary to define garden spaces with a touch of colour.
    • Grow in pots, planters, or flower boxes for flexibility and to bring purple accents to patios or balconies.
    • Use as ground cover to fill in gaps and provide a lush, purple carpet effect.
    • Create an insect corner or biodiversity zone to attract bees and other pollinators with purple prairie flowers for bee gardens.

These plants not only bring beauty but also support biodiversity, making them a valuable addition to any garden. Consider adding purple flowering prairie plants to enjoy their long-lasting blooms and vibrant colours.

Companion plants for balance and boldness

Purple flowering prairie plants can create stunning displays in the garden. These plants pair well with a variety of other species to enhance their beauty. Consider combining them with grasses like Miscanthus or Panicum for a natural look. The movement of the grasses complements the static beauty of the purple blooms. For a more structured appearance, mix with evergreen shrubs such as Buxus or Ilex. These provide a contrasting backdrop that highlights the rich purple prairie plants. For a vibrant display, pair purple flowering prairie plants with yellow or orange perennials like Rudbeckia or Echinacea. This contrast in colour creates a striking visual effect. Another option is to plant alongside white flowering plants like Gaura or Anemone. The white blooms make the deep purple meadow blooms stand out even more. These combinations work well because they balance colour and texture. The variety of shapes and hues creates interest throughout the seasons. Purple flowering gardens benefit from these mixes, offering long-flowering purple wildflowers that attract pollinators. A garden with purple colour accents can be both bold and harmonious, making it a delightful space for both people and wildlife.

    Conditions for vivid purple colour

Purple flowering prairie plants thrive best in full sun. Sunlight is crucial for these plants to develop their vibrant violet and lavender hues. If placed in partial shade, the colour may not be as vivid. Wind can affect these plants, as they are somewhat wind-sensitive. To protect them, consider planting them near a windbreak or using garden structures to shield them. The ideal soil for purple flowering prairie plants is well-drained and rich in nutrients. Sandy or loamy soil types are preferred. Regular fertilisation helps in maintaining healthy growth and enhances the purple colour. Soil moisture is another key factor. These plants prefer moderate moisture levels, so ensure the soil is neither too dry nor waterlogged. Wind and sun exposure can affect moisture, so regular checks are important. Purple flowering prairie plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. A pH range of 6.0 to 7.0 is ideal. Soil pH can influence the intensity of the purple colour, so testing and adjusting the pH can be beneficial. With the right conditions, these plants can create stunning purple flowering gardens and borders, adding beautiful colour accents to any garden.

    Planting guidance for long-lasting purple

Purple flowering prairie plants can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls, it's best to plant in spring or autumn. Consider factors like soil type, sunlight, and drainage when planting. The distance between purple flowering prairie plants depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for these plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially in dry periods. This helps the deep purple meadow blooms establish well. For a garden with purple colour accents, consider mixing with violet wildflowers and other rich purple prairie plants to create stunning purple flowering borders.

Maintenance for Full Flowering of Purple Flowering Prairie Plants

Purple flowering prairie plants, also known as violet prairie flowers or lavender-hued grassland plants, bring vibrant colour to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive and bloom beautifully.

    • Watering: These plants need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly.
    • Pruning: Prune in early spring to remove dead stems and encourage new growth. Use sharp shears for clean cuts, promoting healthy blooms.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. This supports growth and enhances the purple hues. Fertilise once a month during the growing season.
    • Dividing: Divide plants every 3-4 years in early spring to prevent overcrowding. This helps maintain vigour and encourages more blooms.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base in late autumn to protect roots from frost. This ensures plants return strong in spring.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring. Water well after moving to reduce transplant shock and support root establishment.
Incorporating these practices will enhance the beauty of purple flowering gardens, creating stunning purple flowering borders and a garden with purple colour accents. For those looking to expand their collection, consider options to buy purple flowering prairie plants to add more light purple, deep purple, and lavender-coloured blooms to the garden.
