Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

They start growing in early spring, with small shoots emerging from the soil. As the season progresses, they grow steadily, reaching maturity by late summer. Their growth depends on factors like soil quality and care. Shade-tolerant prairie bloomers usually flower in late spring to early summer. The blooming period can be influenced by climate, temperature, and the plant's age. Proper soil preparation and care are essential for a successful bloom. The flowers of shade-adapted prairie plants come in various colours, from soft whites to vibrant purples. The specific hue depends on the species and cultivar. Soil conditions, light exposure, and climate also play a role in the colour intensity. Some shade-tolerant wildflowers are known for their subtle fragrance. The scent can vary based on the plant's leaves, stems, and flowers. The intensity of the fragrance is often influenced by the plant's environment and care. In winter, many shade prairie plants retain their leaves, adding greenery to the garden year-round. However, some may lose their leaves depending on the species and climate.

Winter hardiness is crucial for shade prairie plants. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost can be challenging. The choice of species, wind exposure, and soil conditions all play a role in their survival. It's essential to select the best prairie plants for shady gardens that are suited to the local climate.

These plants are often evergreen, maintaining their foliage throughout the year. This characteristic depends on the species and the garden's location. In milder climates, they are more likely to stay green.

Shade prairie plants are also heat and drought-resistant. Their origins in prairie environments mean they have adapted to withstand dry conditions. Features like a waxy leaf coating or deep root systems help them conserve water.

    Planting tips for shade-tolerant species

Shade prairie plants can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate affect planting. When planting shade prairie plants, consider the distance between them. The type of plant, its size at planting, growth speed, and the number of plants per metre are important. Check the Heijnen product page for specific plant spacing details. Proper soil preparation is crucial for shade prairie plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Before planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, and water thoroughly. After planting, regular watering is essential, especially in dry periods. This helps the plants establish well in shady gardens. Shade prairie plants thrive in low-light areas, making them perfect for shady gardens. These shade-tolerant grassland plants require specific care to flourish. Regular maintenance includes proper watering, pruning, fertilising, and sometimes dividing.

    • Watering: Shade prairie plants need consistent moisture. Check soil moisture regularly and water when the top inch feels dry. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
    • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools to remove dead or damaged stems.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. This supports healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Fertilise once a year for best results.
    • Dividing: Divide plants every 3-4 years to maintain vigour. Do this in early spring or autumn. This helps prevent overcrowding and promotes healthy growth.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base to protect roots from frost. This is especially important in colder climates.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Ensure the new location has similar light and soil conditions. Water thoroughly after moving.
