Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

    What defines purple rockery plants?

Purple flowering rock garden plants are a stunning addition to any garden. These plants thrive in rocky soil and are perfect for creating vibrant displays. Known for their resilience, they can withstand harsh conditions, making them ideal for rock gardens. Popular varieties include Aubrieta, Campanula, and Thymus, which offer a range of purple hues from light lavender to deep violet. These plants are also referred to as deep purple alpine flowers or rich purple rocky plants. They are often used to add colour accents to gardens, creating beautiful purple flowering borders. With their ability to grow in challenging environments, they are perfect for those looking to add wildflowers for rocky soil. Purple flowering rock garden plants are not only visually appealing but also versatile. They can be used to create a garden with purple colour accents, enhancing the overall aesthetic. Whether you prefer light purple or deep purple shades, these plants offer a variety of options. Consider adding flowering rock garden plants to your garden for a touch of elegance and charm.

Key traits of rich purple alpine flowers

Purple flowering rock garden plants are a stunning addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading low across rocky surfaces. They can form dense mats or small clusters, depending on the species. The spread of these plants can range from a few centimetres to over a metre, making them versatile for different garden sizes. The development of purple flowering rock garden plants begins in early spring. They start as small shoots and gradually grow into mature plants by late spring or early summer. The growth rate depends on factors like soil quality, sunlight, and water availability. These plants typically bloom from late spring to early summer. The exact blooming period can vary based on climate, temperature, and care. Warmer climates may see earlier blooms, while cooler areas might experience later flowering. Proper soil preparation and regular watering can enhance blooming. The flowers of these plants come in various shades, including light purple, deep purple, and lavender. The colour intensity can be influenced by the plant variety, soil conditions, and sunlight exposure. Some cultivars may produce more vibrant hues under optimal conditions. While not all purple flowering rock garden plants are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a mild fragrance. This can be affected by the plant's age, health, and environmental factors. Mature purple flowering rock garden plants can reach heights of 10 to 30 centimetres. The height can be influenced by the plant's location, care, and surrounding plants. These plants are ideal for creating layered garden designs and adding purple accents to borders.

Purple flowering rock garden plants are a stunning addition to any garden. Their leaves can vary greatly, with some having a smooth texture while others are more rugged. The colour of the leaves often complements the rich purple hues of the flowers, ranging from deep green to a lighter, more muted shade. These plants may lose their leaves in winter, depending on the species and climate conditions. When it comes to winter hardiness, purple flowering rock garden plants can be quite resilient. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost and strong winds can be challenging. The soil condition also plays a crucial role in their survival during winter. These plants are often evergreen, maintaining their foliage throughout the year. However, some species may shed leaves annually, influenced by the local climate and specific plant type. In terms of heat and drought resistance, these plants are generally well-adapted. Originating from rocky, alpine environments, they often have a waxy leaf coating or fine hairs to reduce water loss. A deep root system helps them access moisture in dry conditions. Purple flowering rock garden plants are typically non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no risk, and they can be handled safely during gardening activities. These plants contribute significantly to biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for insects and small animals, supporting a balanced ecosystem. Their long blooming period and native characteristics make them ideal for enhancing garden resilience against pests and diseases.

Best locations for purple flowering in rocky soils

Purple flowering rock garden plants are perfect for adding colour and texture to a garden. These plants thrive in rocky soils and can be used in various ways to enhance the garden's appearance. Here are some ideas for using purple flowering rockery plants:

    • Border: Create a stunning border with violet rockery blooms to define garden spaces.
    • Group planting: Use lavender-hued stone garden plants in groups for a lush, cohesive look.
    • Solitary: Plant a single purple flowering rock garden plant as a focal point.
    • Rockery: Integrate purple flowers for rock gardens into existing rockeries for added depth.

    • Underplanting: Use these plants as underplanting to complement taller garden features.
    • Insect corner: Attract pollinators by creating an insect-friendly zone with wildflowers for rocky soil.
    • Shade garden: Add light purple and deep purple accents to shaded areas for a pop of colour.
These versatile plants, including violet alpine plants, can transform any garden with purple colour accents. Consider adding amethyst-coloured or mauve-coloured borders and gardens for a unique touch. For those looking to buy purple flowering rock garden plants, they offer a beautiful way to enhance any outdoor space.

    Companion planting with purple-toned flowers

Purple flowering rock garden plants can create stunning displays when combined with other plant types. These plants, known for their vibrant hues, pair beautifully with silver-leaved plants like Artemisia or Santolina. The contrast between the deep purple alpine flowers and the silvery foliage adds depth to any garden. Additionally, mixing rich purple rocky plants with yellow-flowering species such as Achillea or Coreopsis can create a striking visual effect. For a more subtle look, consider pairing violet alpine plants with soft pink or white blooms. This combination can soften the overall appearance of the garden, creating a harmonious and calming space. Purple flowers for rock gardens also work well with grasses like Festuca or Stipa, adding texture and movement. These combinations are not only visually appealing but also beneficial for the garden's ecosystem. The variety of colours and textures attracts a range of pollinators, enhancing biodiversity. Moreover, wildflowers for rocky soil, such as purple rockery plants, are hardy and require minimal maintenance, making them ideal for gardeners seeking low-effort beauty. By incorporating these plants, a garden with purple colour accents can be both beautiful and sustainable.

Soil and slope for vivid purple performance

Purple flowering rock garden plants thrive in full sun to partial shade. These plants need at least six hours of sunlight daily for vibrant blooms. However, some can tolerate light shade, especially in hotter climates. Wind can affect these plants, so consider planting them near a wall or using windbreaks to protect them. The ideal soil for purple flowering rock garden plants is well-draining and slightly alkaline. Sandy or loamy soil types are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth, enhancing the garden's purple colour accents. Soil moisture is crucial; these plants prefer moderate moisture levels. Too much wind or sun can dry the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. The pH preference for these plants is slightly alkaline, around 6.5 to 7.5. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting the pH can improve plant health. Incorporating violet alpine plants and other lavender-hued stone garden plants can create a stunning garden with purple colour accents. Whether in mauve-coloured borders or a garden with purple flowering borders, these plants add a touch of elegance with their light purple and deep purple hues.

How and when to plant purple rockery plants

Purple flowering rock garden plants can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For plants with a root ball, it's best to plant in spring or autumn. The planting distance for purple rockery plants depends on the type, size at planting, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for these plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially during dry spells. This helps the deep purple alpine flowers establish well. For a garden with purple colour accents, consider mixing light purple and deep purple varieties to create a vibrant display. Remember, the right care and spacing will ensure a stunning display of rich purple rocky plants in your garden.

Caring for Purple Flowering Rock Garden Plants

Purple flowering rock garden plants add a vibrant touch to any garden. These plants thrive in well-drained soil and sunny spots. Regular care ensures they bloom beautifully.

    • Watering: Check soil moisture regularly. Water when the top inch is dry, usually once a week. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
    • Pruning: Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools for best results.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring. Follow package instructions for quantity. Fertilise every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
    • Dividing: Divide plants every 3-4 years in early spring. This helps rejuvenate the plant and promotes healthy growth.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base in late autumn to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring. Water well after transplanting and keep soil moist until established.
These steps help maintain the beauty of purple flowering rock garden plants, ensuring they remain a stunning feature in any garden with purple colour accents. For those looking to enhance their garden, consider options to buy purple flowering rock garden plants to add more vibrant hues.
