Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Root type
Root type

A plant or tree can be delivered in a pot, with a root ball or with bare roots.

  • Pot: the advantage of plants grown in pots is that they can be planted all year round, with the exception of periods of frost. After planting, both the root system and the visible, above-ground parts of the plant/tree will continue to grow immediately, provided temperatures are high enough.
  • Root ball: plants and trees with (wired) root balls can be planted roughly between October and April, depending on the weather. During these months, the plants are dormant and at their least vulnerable, which is ideal for planting. Because the plants are freshly uprooted (dug up) at the growers, the root system may be somewhat damaged. Once planted, the plant/tree will first form new roots and will then continue to grow above ground.
  • Bare roots: plants and trees delivered with bare roots can be planted roughly between October and April, depending on the weather. During these months, the plants are dormant and at their least vulnerable, which is ideal for planting. Because the plants are freshly uprooted (dug up) at the growers, the root system may be somewhat damaged. Once planted, the plant/tree will first form new roots and will then continue to grow above ground. Because there is no sand on the roots, the plants are lightweight and therefore easy to carry.
Height at time of delivery (cm)

Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Width at time of delivery (cm)

Our plants can be ordered in different sizes. By width on delivery (cm), we mean the approximate width of the plant in centimetres when we deliver it to you.

The number of centimetres indicated refers to the widest part of the plant. It may not be as wide in other places, since it is a natural product and does not have standard dimensions.

Genus
Show more
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Application
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Flowering month

Winter hardiness
Show more
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

USDA Hardness zones in °C

Opaque
Opaque

This means that the plant has dense growth and is very difficult to see through. This may be due to dense branches or the number of leaves.

Plants that blend well with flowering hedges

Flowering hedge plants can create a stunning display in any garden. Combining them with other plant types enhances their beauty and function. Consider pairing flowering hedges with ornamental grasses. The soft texture of grasses complements the vibrant blooms of flowering hedges, creating a dynamic contrast. Another great combination is with evergreen shrubs. These provide year-round structure and highlight the seasonal colours of the flowering hedges. For a more diverse look, mix in perennials like coneflowers or salvias. These add layers of colour and attract pollinators, enhancing the garden's ecosystem.

One example of a beautiful combination is a flowering hedge with lavender and ornamental grasses. The purple hues of lavender contrast beautifully with the hedge's blooms, while the grasses add movement. Another option is to pair flowering hedges with ferns and hostas. This mix offers a lush, green backdrop that makes the hedge's flowers pop. These combinations not only look good but also support wildlife, providing shelter and food for birds and insects.

These plant combinations with flowering hedges are effective because they offer visual interest and ecological benefits. The mix of textures, colours, and heights creates a balanced and inviting garden space. Additionally, these combinations can serve as a natural barrier, adding privacy and structure to the garden.

Ideal locations and soil for floral hedge success

Flowering hedge plants thrive in various light conditions, but most prefer full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their blooming potential. Too much shade can reduce flower production. Wind can be a concern for flowering hedges. Strong winds may damage delicate blooms. Planting in a sheltered spot or using windbreaks can help protect them. The ideal soil for flowering hedge plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy loam or loamy soil is best. Regular fertilisation supports growth and flowering. Soil moisture is crucial. These plants need consistent moisture, but waterlogged soil can harm them. Wind and sun exposure can dry the soil quickly, so mulching helps retain moisture. Flowering hedge plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Soil pH affects nutrient availability. Testing soil pH and adjusting with lime or sulphur ensures optimal conditions. With the right care, flowering hedges become beautiful, colourful hedging that enhances any garden. Blooming hedge plants and flowering shrubs for hedging add ornamental value and create a fragrant natural barrier.

When and how to plant flowering hedging

Flowering hedge plants can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls or bare roots, the best time is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The distance between flowering hedge plants depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for flowering hedges. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and mix compost into the soil. When planting, place the flowering hedge plants at the correct depth and fill the hole with soil, pressing gently. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells to establish roots. This care ensures a healthy, ornamental flowering hedge that adds beauty and fragrance to the garden.

Flowering hedge plants add beauty and colour to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive and bloom beautifully. Here are some tips for maintaining these ornamental hedges with flowers:

  • Pruning Advice: Prune flowering hedges after they bloom to encourage new growth and maintain shape. Use sharp tools to avoid damaging the plants. Pruning in late winter or early spring is ideal.
  • Fertilising: Fertilise flowering hedge plants in early spring with a balanced fertiliser. This supports healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Apply fertiliser once a year for best results.
  • Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by inserting a finger into the soil. Water deeply to encourage strong root development.
  • Dividing and Transplanting: If necessary, divide and transplant flowering hedge plants in early spring. This helps manage size and promotes healthy growth.
  • Winter Protection: Protect flowering hedges from harsh winter conditions by applying a layer of mulch around the base. This insulates roots and prevents frost damage.
