We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Mature height (cm)
Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Flowering month
Flowering month

The month(s) in which the plant flowers under normal (weather) conditions.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

USDA Hardness zones in °C

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Fruit-bearing plants
Fruit-bearing plants

Plants that form fruits or berries after flowering.

These shrubs, such as Weigela, Spiraea, and Deutzia, are known for their vibrant blooms that can transform a garden with pink colour accents. Often referred to as rose-hued shrubs or soft pink flowering shrubs, they provide a romantic touch to any outdoor space. These shrubs are versatile and can be used in various ways in the garden. They are perfect for creating pink flowering borders or adding a splash of colour to coral-coloured borders and gardens. Many gardeners choose pink-flowering shrubs for cottage gardens due to their charming and timeless appeal. Long-blooming pink bushes like Rosa and Hydrangea are popular choices for those looking to enjoy extended flowering periods. Incorporating flowering shrubs into a garden design can enhance the overall aesthetic, making it a more inviting and visually appealing space. Whether aiming for a soft pink or a bright pink display, these shrubs offer endless possibilities for creativity and beauty in the garden.

Traits of rose-hued and soft pink flowering bushes

Pink flowering shrubs are a delightful addition to any garden. These pastel pink garden shrubs can grow in various forms, from compact bushes to sprawling ornamental bushes. They often spread outwards, creating a lush appearance in pink flowering gardens. The development of pink flowering shrubs begins in early spring. Buds start to form, and by late spring, they burst into full bloom. These romantic pink shrubs thrive in well-drained soil and prefer a sunny spot. Regular watering and fertilising help them reach their full potential. Pink flowering shrubs typically bloom from late spring to early summer. The exact timing can vary based on climate, weather conditions, and the shrub's age. Warmer temperatures and proper care can extend the blooming period, making them ideal for pink flowering borders. The blooms of pink flowering shrubs come in a range of shades, including soft pink, light pink, and deep pink. Factors like soil type, light exposure, and the specific cultivar influence the colour intensity. These shrubs can add vibrant peony pink or subtle salmon pink accents to a garden with pink colour accents. While not all pink flowering shrubs are known for their scent, some varieties offer a gentle fragrance. The intensity of the aroma can depend on the type of shrub and its growing conditions. These blush pink ornamental bushes can enhance biodiversity by attracting pollinators. Mature pink flowering shrubs can reach different heights, depending on the species and care. They can be used to create coral-coloured borders and gardens, adding layers and depth to the landscape. Choosing the right location and providing proper care ensures they thrive and beautify the garden.

Pink flowering shrubs are a delightful addition to any garden, offering a range of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. The leaves can vary from oval to lance-shaped, with shades of green that complement the soft pink blooms. Some shrubs have smooth leaves, while others may have a slightly rough texture. These shrubs often retain their leaves in winter, depending on the species and climate, providing year-round interest in the garden.

Winter hardiness is an important factor for pink flowering shrubs. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost can be challenging. Choosing the right species and ensuring they are planted in a sheltered spot with well-drained soil can improve their resilience. Wind protection is also crucial to prevent damage during harsh winters.

Many pink flowering shrubs are evergreen, maintaining their foliage throughout the year. However, some may shed leaves annually, influenced by the specific type and local climate conditions. Positioning them in a suitable location with adequate sunlight and protection can enhance their evergreen nature.

These shrubs are generally heat and drought-tolerant, thanks to their origin and leaf structure. A waxy coating or fine hairs on the leaves can help reduce water loss. Deep root systems allow them to access moisture from deeper soil layers, making them suitable for gardens with varying water availability.

Pink flowering shrubs are safe for gardens with children and pets, as they are non-toxic under normal gardening conditions. They can be handled safely, ensuring a worry-free gardening experience.

These shrubs play a vital role in supporting biodiversity. Their long blooming period provides food and shelter for insects and birds, enhancing the garden's ecosystem. By mimicking natural habitats, they contribute to a balanced environment, making gardens more resistant to pests and diseases.

    • Underplanting: Use them as underplanting for taller trees, adding a layer of soft pink to the garden.
    • Insect Corner: Pink flowering shrubs can attract pollinators, making them ideal for a biodiversity zone.

Pairing pink flowering shrubs with whites and greens

Pink flowering shrubs can create a stunning effect in any garden. These rose-hued shrubs pair beautifully with a variety of plant types. Consider combining them with white flowering plants like daisies or lilies. The contrast between the soft pink flowering shrubs and the crisp white blooms adds a romantic touch to the garden. For a more vibrant look, mix them with deep green foliage plants such as ferns or hostas. This combination highlights the pink flowering shrubs, making them stand out even more.

Some beautiful plant combinations include pink flowering shrubs with lavender and silver foliage plants like Artemisia. This mix creates a soft, dreamy garden with a variety of textures. Another option is to pair them with coral-coloured borders and gardens, which enhances the pink tones and adds depth to the garden design.

The combination of pink flowering shrubs with whites and greens is visually appealing because it balances colour and texture. The soft pink hues bring warmth and charm, while the whites and greens provide a fresh and clean backdrop. This makes pink flowering shrubs ideal for pink flowering gardens and pink flowering borders, adding a touch of elegance and romance to any garden with pink colour accents.

Soil, shade and light tips for pink blooms

Pink flowering shrubs thrive in different light conditions. They prefer full sun to partial shade. Too much shade can reduce blooms. Consider the garden's position and nearby trees. Wind can affect these shrubs. Plant them in sheltered spots or use windbreaks. The right soil is crucial. Well-drained soil helps growth. Sandy or loamy soil is ideal. Regular fertilising supports healthy blooms. Moisture levels are important. Keep the soil evenly moist. Wind and sun can dry the soil quickly. Check moisture often. Pink flowering shrubs like a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Test the soil to ensure the right balance. Adjust with lime or sulphur if needed. These shrubs add beauty to pink flowering gardens and pink flowering borders. They create a garden with pink colour accents, from soft pink to deep pink shades. Enjoy the romantic pink shrubs in coral-coloured borders and gardens.

How and when to plant pink shrubs

Pink flowering shrubs can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For shrubs with root balls or bare roots, the best time to plant is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. When considering plant spacing for pink flowering shrubs, it's important to think about the type of shrub, its size at planting, and growth rate. The number of plants per metre or square metre is usually listed in the plant properties on the Heijnen product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for pink flowering shrubs. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and as deep as the container. For planting instructions, place the shrub in the hole, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly. After planting, regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks. This helps the roots establish well. Pink flowering shrubs add a romantic touch to gardens with pink colour accents, creating beautiful pink flowering borders and gardens.

Maintenance Tips for Pink Flowering Shrubs

Pink flowering shrubs add a beautiful touch to any garden with pink colour accents. Proper care ensures these pastel pink garden shrubs thrive.

    • Watering: Pink flowering shrubs need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly. Early morning is the best time to water.
    • Pruning: Prune blush pink ornamental bushes in late winter or early spring. This encourages new growth and maintains shape. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damage.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support growth. Follow package instructions for quantity. Fertilise again in mid-summer if needed.
    • Dividing: If shrubs become too large, divide them in early spring. This helps rejuvenate the plant and promotes healthy blooms.
    • Winter Protection: Protect pink flowering shrubs from harsh winter conditions by adding mulch around the base. This insulates roots and retains moisture.
    • Transplanting: If necessary, transplant in early spring. Water well after moving to reduce stress and encourage root establishment.
