We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Mature height (cm)
Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application

Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

USDA Hardness zones in °C

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Key features of deep purple flowering garden bushes

Purple flowering shrubs are a stunning addition to any garden. These lavender-hued garden shrubs grow in various forms, from compact bushes to sprawling violet ornamental bushes. They can spread widely, creating a lush appearance in purple flowering gardens. The development of purple flowering shrubs begins in early spring. They start as small buds and gradually grow into full blooms by late spring or early summer. The growth rate depends on factors like soil quality, sunlight, and regular watering. These shrubs typically bloom from late spring to early summer. The exact timing can vary based on climate, temperature, and care. Warmer climates may see earlier blooms, while cooler areas might experience later flowering. The blooms of purple flowering shrubs come in a range of colours, including light purple, deep purple, and lavender-coloured hues. The specific shade can be influenced by the type of shrub, soil conditions, and sunlight exposure. While not all purple flowering shrubs are known for their scent, some varieties offer a pleasant fragrance. This can enhance the garden's biodiversity and attract pollinators. The intensity of the scent can vary with the plant's age and health. Mature purple flowering shrubs can reach different heights, depending on the species. Some may grow to a modest height, while others can become tall, creating a striking visual impact in a garden with purple colour accents. Proper placement and care are essential for achieving the desired height and appearance.

Purple flowering shrubs are a beautiful addition to any garden, offering a range of shapes and colours. The leaves of these shrubs can vary greatly, with some having oval or lance-shaped leaves, while others may have more intricate forms. Leaf colour can range from deep green to a lighter, more muted shade, often providing a striking contrast to the vibrant purple blooms. The texture of the leaves can be smooth or slightly hairy, depending on the species. Most purple flowering shrubs are deciduous, meaning they lose their leaves in winter, but some varieties remain evergreen, adding year-round interest to the garden.

When it comes to winter hardiness, purple flowering shrubs can vary. Some are quite hardy and can withstand cold temperatures, while others may need protection from frost. Factors such as wind exposure and soil conditions can also affect their ability to survive winter. In terms of heat and drought resistance, many purple flowering shrubs are quite resilient. Their origins often lie in regions with hot climates, and they may have adaptations like a waxy leaf coating or deep root systems to help them conserve water.

These shrubs are generally safe for gardens with children and pets, as they are not known to be toxic. They also play a vital role in supporting biodiversity. Purple flowering shrubs can attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, contributing to a healthy ecosystem. By providing food and shelter, they help maintain the balance of garden life, making them an excellent choice for those looking to create a pollinator-friendly purple shrub garden.

Where to plant purple shrubs for visual impact

Purple flowering shrubs are a stunning addition to any garden. These lavender-hued garden shrubs can be used in various ways to enhance the beauty of outdoor spaces. Here are some ideas on how to incorporate violet ornamental bushes into a garden:

    • Borders: Use purple-flowering shrubs for borders to create a striking outline around garden beds. The contrast of light purple and deep purple shades can add depth and interest.
    • Group Planting: Planting these shrubs in groups can create a lush, violet-coloured display. This method is ideal for creating a garden with purple colour accents.
    • Solitary Planting: A single, well-placed purple flowering shrub can serve as a focal point, drawing attention with its vibrant plum-coloured blooms.
    • Hedges: Use these shrubs as a hedge or privacy screen. Their dense foliage and amethyst-coloured flowers can provide both beauty and function.
    • Containers: Planting in pots or containers allows for flexibility in garden design. Mauve-coloured borders and gardens can be easily achieved with portable purple flowering shrubs.
For those looking to buy purple flowering shrubs, consider their role in pollinator-friendly gardens. These shrubs not only add visual appeal but also attract beneficial insects, enhancing the garden's ecosystem.

Companion ideas for moody colour schemes

Purple flowering shrubs can create stunning combinations in the garden. These shrubs pair beautifully with a variety of plant types and species. Consider mixing them with silver-leaved plants like Artemisia or Santolina. The contrast between the deep purple flowering shrubs and the silvery foliage creates a striking visual effect. Another great combination is with grasses such as Stipa or Miscanthus. The movement of the grasses complements the rich purple garden shrubs, adding texture and interest. For a more vibrant look, pair purple flowering shrubs with yellow or orange perennials like Rudbeckia or Helenium. This creates a lively contrast that brightens up any garden with purple colour accents. These combinations work well in purple flowering borders, providing a harmonious blend of colours. Purple-flowering shrubs for borders are also pollinator-friendly, attracting bees and butterflies. This not only enhances the beauty of the garden but also supports local wildlife. By choosing a mix of light purple, deep purple, and lavender-coloured plants, a garden can achieve a balanced and cohesive look. Whether aiming for a violet-coloured or plum-coloured theme, these shrubs offer endless possibilities for creating a garden with purple colour accents.

Soil, sun and moisture for vivid purple flowers

Purple flowering shrubs thrive best in full sun, needing at least six hours of sunlight daily. This ensures vibrant blooms and healthy growth. However, they can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates. Wind can be a concern for these shrubs, as strong gusts may damage delicate flowers. Planting them near a fence or using windbreaks can help protect them. The ideal soil for purple flowering shrubs is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy loam or loamy soil types are perfect, as they prevent waterlogging while retaining necessary nutrients. Regular fertilisation supports their growth, enhancing the beauty of lavender-hued garden shrubs. Maintaining the right soil moisture is crucial. These shrubs prefer consistently moist soil but not soggy conditions. Factors like wind and sun exposure can affect moisture levels, so mulching can help retain soil moisture. Purple flowering shrubs favour a slightly acidic to neutral pH, around 6.0 to 7.0. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting pH levels can promote healthy violet ornamental bushes. Incorporating organic matter can naturally balance pH, ensuring a thriving garden with purple colour accents.

When to plant purple garden shrubs

Purple flowering shrubs can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For shrubs with root balls or bare roots, the best time to plant is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The distance between purple flowering shrubs depends on the type of shrub, its size at planting, growth rate, and the number of plants per metre. This information is usually found on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for purple flowering shrubs. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the shrub, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry periods to help establish the roots. This care will ensure a vibrant garden with purple colour accents, featuring deep purple flowering shrubs and rich purple garden shrubs.

Care Tips for Maintaining Purple Flowering Shrubs

Purple flowering shrubs add a stunning touch to any garden. These lavender-hued garden shrubs require specific care to thrive. Regular maintenance ensures vibrant blooms and healthy growth.

    • Watering: Purple flowering shrubs need consistent moisture. Water deeply once a week, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by inserting a finger; if dry, it's time to water.
    • Pruning: Prune violet ornamental bushes in late winter or early spring. This encourages new growth and maintains shape. Use sharp, clean tools to avoid damage.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. This supports growth and enhances the purple flowering gardens. Follow package instructions for the correct amount.
    • Dividing: If applicable, divide shrubs every few years in early spring. This prevents overcrowding and promotes healthy blooms.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, mulch around the base to protect roots from frost. This helps maintain the garden with purple colour accents.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Water well after moving to reduce stress and encourage establishment.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider adding more purple flowering shrubs. These lilac and plum-coloured plants create beautiful mauve-coloured borders and gardens.
