Mature height (cm)
Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Flower colour

The flower colour(s) of the plant.

Flowering month
Flowering month

The month(s) in which the plant flowers under normal (weather) conditions.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

USDA Hardness zones in °C

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Fruit-bearing plants
Fruit-bearing plants

Plants that form fruits or berries after flowering.

Features of bright white ornamental flowering bushes

White flowering shrubs are a stunning addition to any garden. These elegant garden shrubs can grow in various forms, from compact bushes to more sprawling shapes. They often spread to a width of 1 to 2 metres, making them ideal for white-flowering borders or as evening garden plants. The development of white flowering shrubs begins in early spring. Buds start to form, and by late spring to early summer, they reach their full bloom. The growth rate can vary depending on the climate, soil quality, and care provided. Regular pruning and proper soil preparation can enhance their growth. White flowering shrubs typically bloom from late spring to early summer. The exact timing can depend on weather conditions, temperature, and the age of the plant. In cooler climates, they may bloom later, while warmer areas might see earlier flowering. The blooms of these shrubs come in various shades of white, including snow white, ivory white, and cream-coloured. Factors like soil type, light exposure, and the specific cultivar can influence the exact hue. Proper care ensures vibrant and consistent colouring. While not all white flowering shrubs are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a pleasant fragrance. The intensity of the scent can depend on the type of shrub and environmental factors like temperature and humidity. Mature white flowering shrubs can reach heights of 1 to 3 metres. Their height makes them perfect for creating layers in a garden with white colour accents. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care will help them thrive. For those looking to enhance their garden, consider the option to buy white flowering shrubs to add a touch of elegance.

White flowering shrubs are a beautiful addition to any garden. Their leaves can vary in shape, colour, and texture. Some have oval leaves, while others might be more elongated. The colour ranges from deep green to lighter shades, and the texture can be smooth or slightly rough. These shrubs often keep their leaves in winter, depending on the type and climate. In colder areas, some might lose their leaves, but many remain evergreen, providing year-round interest.

When it comes to winter hardiness, white flowering shrubs can be quite resilient. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost can be challenging. The choice of shrub, wind exposure, and soil conditions all play a role in their survival. Planting in a sheltered spot can help protect them from harsh winds.

These shrubs are often evergreen, meaning they keep their leaves throughout the year. However, some types may shed leaves annually, influenced by the climate and location. In milder climates, they are more likely to remain green.

White flowering shrubs are generally heat and drought-tolerant. Their origin, leaf structure, and root system contribute to this resilience. A waxy coating or fine hairs on leaves can reduce water loss, while deep roots help access moisture during dry spells.

In terms of toxicity, white flowering shrubs are safe for gardens. They pose no danger to children or pets when used normally. It's always wise to supervise young children and pets around any plants.

These shrubs support biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and birds. Their long blooming period and native-friendly traits make them excellent for creating balanced ecosystems. They enhance garden resilience against pests and diseases, offering a haven for wildlife.

Where to place white shrubs for clarity and contrast

White flowering shrubs add a touch of elegance to any garden. These snow-white garden shrubs can be used in various ways to enhance the beauty of outdoor spaces. Here are some ideas on how to incorporate pure white flowering shrubs into the garden:

    • Underplanting: Combine with other plants for a layered look, adding cream-coloured contrast.

For those looking to buy white flowering shrubs, these versatile plants can transform any garden into a timeless space of pure white beauty.

Combining white shrubs with colour-rich perennials

White flowering shrubs can create a stunning contrast in the garden when combined with colour-rich perennials. These pearl-white ornamental bushes, like hydrangeas or spireas, pair beautifully with vibrant plants such as purple salvias or red daylilies. The bright white shrubs stand out against the deep hues, creating a striking visual effect. For a more subtle look, consider combining white flowering shrubs with soft pink peonies or lavender catmint. This combination adds a gentle touch to the garden, enhancing the elegance of the white flowering borders. The ivory-toned blooms of the shrubs complement the pastel colours, creating a harmonious and serene atmosphere. These combinations are not only visually appealing but also practical. White flowering shrubs are excellent for evening garden plants, as their snow white and cream-coloured blooms reflect moonlight, adding a magical glow to the garden. Additionally, these shrubs are versatile and can be used in pure white borders and gardens, providing a clean and fresh look. By mixing them with colourful perennials, a garden with white colour accents becomes a vibrant and lively space.

Conditions for crisp white flowering results

White flowering shrubs thrive best in full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their blooming, with more sun leading to more vibrant blooms. However, too much direct sunlight can cause stress, so a balance is key. These shrubs are generally not wind-sensitive, but in exposed areas, a windbreak can help protect them. The ideal soil for white flowering shrubs is well-drained and rich in organic matter. A mix of loam and sand is perfect, as it allows for good drainage while retaining necessary moisture. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth and enhances the blooms. Soil moisture is crucial; these shrubs prefer consistently moist soil but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. White flowering shrubs prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting the pH can improve growth. Incorporating white flowering shrubs into a garden with white colour accents or pure white borders creates an elegant and serene atmosphere. These snow-white garden shrubs add a touch of elegance to any garden setting.

Planting time and care for white blooms

White flowering shrubs can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate affect planting success. When planting, consider the type of shrub, its size, and growth rate. The number of plants per metre depends on these factors and is usually listed on the product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Loosen the soil and mix in compost to improve drainage and nutrients. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the shrub in the hole, fill with soil, and water well. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks. White flowering shrubs, also known as pearl-white ornamental bushes or bright white shrubs, add elegance to gardens. They create stunning white flowering borders and gardens with white colour accents. Whether in a garden with white colour accents or pure white borders, these shrubs bring a touch of snow white, ivory white, and soft white beauty to any space.

    Maintenance for White Flowering Shrubs

White flowering shrubs add elegance to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive and maintain their beauty.

    • Regular watering is essential. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer. Water deeply when dry, preferably in the morning.
    • Pruning helps maintain shape and encourages new growth. Best done in late winter or early spring using clean, sharp tools.
    • Fertilising in early spring with a balanced fertiliser supports healthy blooms. Follow package instructions for quantity.
    • Dividing shrubs every few years can rejuvenate them. Best done in early spring or autumn.
    • Winter protection is crucial in colder climates. Mulch around the base to insulate roots.
    • Transplanting is best in early spring or autumn. Water well after moving to reduce stress.
These steps help maintain a garden with white colour accents, ensuring snow-white garden shrubs remain a stunning feature. For those looking to enhance their garden, consider options to buy white flowering shrubs to complement existing plants.
