Care & Advice
Grow Thuja Smaragd “Emerald” in full sun. Although the plant can grow in partial shade, it is intolerant to full shade and will start turning brown, eventually dying due to lack of sunlight. Plant in well-drained soil and water the young plants deeply at planting. The soil might dry out before the next water application, but you should know that this species is not drought resistant and must be watered thoroughly during the growing season.
Feed the plants with a 10-10-10 fertilizer in early spring to stimulate growth and improve the plant’s health for the coming growing season. Feed again in mid-fall after the hot summer months have passed. However, you should avoid fertilizing during planting time. Only prune the sides of the privacy shrubs if branches become too long or when dead branches need to be removed. Don’t prune the top of the Thuja tree as this ruins its natural shape. You can, however, do this to control the height of the plant. If you are faced with an overgrowth, prune to give the plant a good shape.
