Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

What is Chamaecyparis and how is it different from true cypress?

Chamaecyparis, often known as false cypress, is a group of evergreen conifers. Unlike true cypress, which belongs to the family Cupressaceae, Chamaecyparis stands out due to its unique growth patterns and diverse uses in the garden. Often called dwarf cypress or Fernspray cypress, these trees are cherished for their ability to enhance a garden with their evergreen structure. Native to regions such as North America, Japan, and Taiwan, Chamaecyparis is adaptable and can thrive in various climates. It plays an essential role in natural habitats by providing nesting opportunities for birds. The name 'Chamaecyparis' originates from the Greek words ‘chamai’ meaning low, and ‘kyparissos,’ which means cypress. This plant has spiritual significance, often seen as a symbol of mourning and eternity, especially in Japan where it is used in temple gardens. Its slow to moderate growth, combined with its wind resistance, makes it a reliable choice for hedges, specimens, or windbreaks. For those looking to buy Chamaecyparis in the UK, these conifers offer an excellent option for borders and planters due to their prunable nature.

Key traits of False Cypress used in garden architecture

Chamaecyparis is known for its evergreen nature and slow to moderate growth. It thrives in various garden setups, including hedges and ornamental specimens. The growth forms include upright and conical shapes, sometimes spreading broadly. This evergreen conifer stands out with its scaly foliage and pleasant aroma from its wood. The foliage often presents a vibrant blue-green or golden-green hue, providing a stunning visual contrast in any garden. The life cycle of Chamaecyparis sees it develop from a young shoot with yellowish tones to a mature plant. While it does not have a distinct flowering period, it produces small, cone-like fruiting bodies instead. Factors such as location and climate contribute to its growth, making it a resilient choice for many gardeners. Chamaecyparis reaches a height between 30 cm and 35 m, depending on the species and growth conditions. Light availability, soil quality, and care practices impact its maximum height. Known as a wind-resistant and prunable plant, it can serve as a hedge plant or as an individual ornamental tree. While it’s more popular for its visual appeal rather than its scent, the foliage and bark do emit a subtle fragrance that adds to the garden's biodiversity. The Chamaecyparis is a slow-growing hedge plant with fine needle texture, ideal for creating structured landscapes. This false cypress can adapt to various conditions, making it a versatile choice for gardeners seeking a beautiful, long-lasting addition to their outdoor space.

The Chamaecyparis has scale-shaped, finely branched leaves with a unique scaly texture. Leaf colours range from blue-green and yellow-green to dark green, often variegated with yellow. These aromatic needles are well-suited to various environments, showing resilience to wind and pruning. In winter, Chamaecyparis remains lush, offering year-round foliage. Its ability to withstand cold temperatures, ranging from -40°C to -29°C, makes it a reliable choice for gardens in USDA zones 3 to 5. Despite its hardiness, the plant's need for well-draining soil and protection from excessive wind should be considered to prevent damage during frost periods. The evergreen characteristic of Chamaecyparis means it doesn't shed leaves annually, maintaining its vibrant appearance throughout the seasons. Its drought resistance benefits from a deep root system and needle structure, coping well with dry periods. Importantly, Chamaecyparis is non-toxic to children and pets, although contact with sap may cause minor irritation. In gardens, it contributes positively to biodiversity, acting as a habitat for insects and providing shelter for small creatures. The plant's long-lasting foliage, particularly the spring growth flush, ensures it remains an attractive feature in the garden. For those seeking the best Chamaecyparis for small gardens in the UK, this ornamental plant is a valuable choice. Regular maintenance, like pruning dwarf cypress variants, helps retain its compact form, adding to its decorative needle structure and ecological value.

Using Chamaecyparis for structure, borders or rockeries

Chamaecyparis is a versatile choice for any garden, providing both structure and elegance. As an evergreen conifer, it can be used in various applications to enhance garden design. Here are some ways Chamaecyparis can be utilised in your outdoor space:

  • Use Chamaecyparis as a hedge to create a lush evergreen boundary. It provides privacy and acts as an excellent windbreak.
  • Plant it as a specimen shrub to add architectural interest and a focal point in classical gardens.
  • Grow Chamaecyparis in pots or planters for patios or terraces, allowing for flexibility in arrangement.
  • Incorporate it into topiary designs for a formal, structured look in both traditional and modern settings.
  • Utilise as a windscreen, offering protection from strong winds and adding visual interest with its dense foliage.
  • Include it in rockeries or borders where its dwarf conifer varieties can offer texture and colour contrast.
  • Consider Chamaecyparis for cemetery planting, where its evergreen nature symbolises eternal life.
These applications showcase the unique properties of false cypress, making it a valuable addition to any garden plan. Its adaptability in both hedging and pot planting allows for diverse garden designs. Those looking to buy false cypress can enjoy a plant that remains attractive throughout the year, thanks to its evergreen foliage. With its ability to fit into various garden styles, Chamaecyparis offers both beauty and structure.

Good companion plants for conifers like Chamaecyparis

Chamaecyparis can be beautifully combined with different plant types to create a stunning garden. This evergreen conifer works well with other plants such as Taxus, Ilex, and Thuja. These combinations add depth and contrast to the garden. Viburnum tinus and Mahonia also make good companions, offering seasonal interest with their flowers and berries. These plants enhance the structural form of Chamaecyparis, making the garden look more dynamic. The needle-like leaves of Chamaecyparis complement the broad leaves of Viburnum and the spiky texture of Mahonia, providing a balanced appearance. Using Chamaecyparis as a background plant can highlight the colours and shapes of its companions. Chamaecyparis fills in quickly and is a strong candidate as a fast-growing hedge. It is perfect for creating topiary forms or for pruning into different shapes. Whether used in classical garden designs or as a natural divider, Chamaecyparis enhances the overall garden experience. By choosing the right companion plants, this ornamental needle tree can transform a simple garden into a beautiful sanctuary.

Soil types and moisture levels suited to Chamaecyparis (false cypress)

Chamaecyparis thrives in a variety of lighting conditions, from full sun to light shade. It is important that these evergreen conifers receive ample sunlight for optimal growth, yet some shade can help prevent scorching during intense summer heat. The Chamaecyparis conifer is known for its resilience, but strong winds can be problematic. Planting them in a sheltered spot or using windbreaks can help mitigate potential damage. The ideal soil for Chamaecyparis is well-draining and ranges from acidic to neutral pH levels. A mix that retains moisture while still allowing excess water to escape is best. Adding organic matter can enhance soil structure, and regular fertilisation supports growth. Moisture retention is crucial, as the soil should remain consistently damp but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can quickly dry out the soil, so mulching helps maintain the right moisture level. Chamaecyparis conifer prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. This ensures nutrients are readily available for the plant. Testing soil pH and amending it as needed will promote healthy growth. These conifers, including Fernspray cypress, are popular for their slow-growing nature, making them suitable choices for gardens and borders.

When to plant Chamaecyparis for compact and slow growth

Chamaecyparis thrives best when planted in early spring or autumn, especially on cloudy days. Plants delivered in pots can be planted year-round, avoiding frosty periods. When planting Chamaecyparis, consider soil conditions such as moist, humus-rich, and slightly acidic to neutral soil. Ensure the soil has a loose structure to support healthy root development.

The planting distance for Chamaecyparis depends on the plant type and anticipated growth. Consider factors like initial size, growth rate, and the number of plants per metre. Information on the number of plants per metre is typically found on the plant's product page. For good growth, the soil should be prepared with Heijnen planting soil, ensuring a rich foundation for the plant.

To plant Chamaecyparis, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, position the plant, and backfill with soil. Water generously immediately after planting and continue to water regularly. Chamaecyparis prefers full sun to light shade and well-drained soils. Regular pruning helps maintain shape and encourages healthy growth. Integrating false cypress (Chamaecyparis) into garden designs can significantly enhance evergreen appeal.

  • Planting

  • Pruning
  • Watering
  • Characteristics
  • Separating / dividing

Ideal placement of a Chamaecyparis

Chamaecyparis thrives best in well-drained, acidic to neutral soils, enjoying full sun to light shade. A wind-protected spot enhances its health, as excessive exposure can stress the plant. The right placement ensures strong growth, vibrant foliage, and increased resistance against environmental factors. Chamaecyparis flourishes on moist but well-drained soils, adapting well to these conditions. This plant is a versatile addition to any garden, perfect as a hedge, specimen, or topiary. It can also be used in pots and planters. Selecting an ideal spot is crucial for its growth and overall vitality, promoting a rich and lush appearance. Properly positioned, Chamaecyparis adds structure and elegance to landscapes, functioning effectively as a windbreak or decorative element in classic garden settings.

Planting a Chamaecyparis

Proper soil preparation is key when planting Chamaecyparis. Start by loosening the soil to improve drainage and ensure water reaches the roots. Mixing in compost is beneficial, as it adds nutrients and enhances soil structure. This step is crucial before planting to help the false cypress thrive. Pot-grown plants can be planted year-round, except during frost. For root ball plants, plant in spring or autumn with the jute bag intact. Water newly planted Chamaecyparis until roots establish. Plant spacing depends on the size of each plant, ensuring enough room for growth. Healthy root development is supported by well-drained, moist soil, which Chamaecyparis prefers. Prioritising soil quality and proper watering ensures these evergreens establish well, showcasing their beauty in the garden.

Fertilising a Chamaecyparis

Proper fertilisation of Chamaecyparis is essential for optimal growth and health. Using an organic fertiliser like those from Heijnen encourages strong roots and vibrant foliage. Fertilising twice a year, in early spring and summer, supports lush and healthy growth. It's crucial to apply the right amount based on plant size, as excessive fertilising can lead to unwanted growth surges. The nutrients in fertilisers are made available once watered in, so ensure adequate moisture for absorption. In periods of drought, watering the garden helps release these nutrients into the soil. This practice enhances the vitality of the false cypress, ensuring it thrives throughout the growing season.

Pruning a Chamaecyparis

Chamaecyparis, often known for its elegant cones and foliage, requires regular pruning to maintain its shape and health. Pruning offers many benefits, including improved air circulation and encouraging new growth. The best time to prune is early spring, focusing on removing dead or damaged branches. This helps the plant to thrive during the growing season. It's important to prune Chamaecyparis before any new growth emerges. Use sharp secateurs for smaller branches, and a saw for thicker sections. Good tools are essential to make clean cuts and prevent damage to the plant. Chamaecyparis can handle light shaping, but avoid cutting into old wood, as it does not sprout again. Regular maintenance keeps the plant looking its best and ensures its long-term health.

Watering a Chamaecyparis

Chamaecyparis requires careful watering, particularly when newly planted. Young plants need regular watering to establish strong roots. Once established, these trees usually require watering only during prolonged dry spells. Aim for deep, thorough watering rather than frequent light sprinkling. Early morning or late afternoon are optimal times for watering to minimise evaporation. Checking soil moisture can help determine if more water is necessary. It's essential that excess water can drain away, whether the plant is in the ground or a pot. Drip irrigation systems are effective once the plant is established but should be supplemented by hand watering initially. Although Chamaecyparis has moderate drought tolerance, extended dry periods can stress the plant, especially on sandy soils. Regular monitoring and proper watering practices ensure healthy growth.

The characteristics of a Chamaecyparis

Chamaecyparis, admired for its decorative needle structure, adds elegance to any garden. This evergreen plant offers year-round beauty with its compact or columnar shape. Known for being wind-resistant and low maintenance, Chamaecyparis serves well as a solitary feature or in hedges. Historically, its use in temple gardens in Japan symbolised mourning and eternity. Notably, it's safe around children and pets, though caution is advised as the sap can irritate.

Separating/dividing a Chamaecyparis

Chamaecyparis, an evergreen tree, is typically propagated by cuttings or grafting. This method ensures healthy growth and maintains the characteristics of the plant. Propagation helps rejuvenate the plant, allowing new growth to flourish. While it cannot be divided, propagation is crucial for preserving the plant's strength and appearance. Regular propagation is advised every few years to keep the plant in optimal condition. Ideally, cuttings are taken in late summer to early autumn. Use sharp secateurs to take semi-hardwood cuttings for the best results. Remember to maintain a humidity-controlled environment for the cuttings to root effectively. This method helps maintain the garden's beauty and ensures the plant thrives.
