Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Key traits of red nectar flowers for pollinators

Red flowering bee plants, also known as crimson nectar plants or scarlet bee-friendly plants, are a vibrant addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading widely to create a lush display. They can range from compact bushes to sprawling vines, providing a rich tapestry of red hues. The development of red flowering bee plants begins in early spring. As temperatures rise, they start to sprout, reaching maturity by late spring or early summer. The growth is influenced by factors like soil quality, sunlight, and regular watering. These plants typically bloom from late spring to early autumn. The blooming period can vary depending on climate, weather conditions, and care. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil encourage a longer flowering season. The blooms of red flowering bee plants come in a spectrum of reds, including deep red, carmine red, and fiery red. The specific shade can depend on the plant variety, soil pH, and sunlight exposure. Proper care ensures vibrant colours that attract pollinators. While not all red flowering bee plants are known for their scent, some varieties offer a subtle fragrance. This can be influenced by the plant's age, health, and environmental conditions. The scent can enhance the garden's biodiversity, attracting bees and other beneficial insects. Mature red flowering bee plants can reach various heights, from low-growing ground covers to taller shrubs. The height is affected by the plant's location, care, and surrounding plants. Choosing the right spot in the garden can create stunning red-toned borders and gardens.

Red flowering bee plants are a vibrant addition to any garden, offering both beauty and ecological benefits. The leaves of these plants can vary in shape, colour, and texture, often influenced by the specific species and environmental conditions. Some may have deep green, glossy leaves, while others might display a more muted, matte finish. The structure can range from smooth to slightly hairy, aiding in water retention and protection from pests. In winter, many red flowering bee plants retain their leaves, providing year-round interest, though some may shed depending on the climate and species. Winter hardiness is crucial for red flowering bee plants. These plants can withstand mild frost, but severe cold, prolonged frost periods, and strong winds can affect their survival. Well-drained soil and sheltered positions enhance their resilience. Most red flowering bee plants are evergreen, maintaining their foliage throughout the year. However, in colder climates, some may lose leaves, influenced by species choice and garden location. Heat and drought tolerance are notable in red flowering bee plants. Originating from warmer regions, they often have adaptations like waxy or hairy leaves and deep root systems to conserve moisture. Adequate soil moisture and protection from harsh winds further support their growth. These plants are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no risk, ensuring a safe environment for all. Red flowering bee plants significantly boost biodiversity. Their long-lasting blooms attract pollinators, supporting ecosystems and enhancing garden resilience. They provide food and shelter, contributing to a balanced and thriving garden environment.

Where to use red blooms in bee-attracting designs

    • Containers: Perfect for pots or planters, adding cherry red tones to patios or balconies.
    • Underplanting: Combine with taller plants to create a layered effect with carmine red flowers.
    • Insect Corner: Create a biodiversity zone with wine red blooms to support pollinators.
For those looking to enhance their garden with these stunning plants, consider options to buy red flowering bee plants. These red nectar plants not only beautify but also support the ecosystem by attracting bees. Whether aiming for a garden with red colour accents or a full red flowering garden, these plants are an excellent choice.

Pairing with white, orange and green flowers

Red flowering bee plants can create stunning contrasts in the garden when combined with other colours. Pairing these bright red pollinator plants with white flowers like daisies or orange blooms such as marigolds can enhance the vibrant red tones. Green foliage from plants like ferns or hostas provides a calming backdrop, allowing the fiery red, cherry red, and wine red hues to stand out. For a striking combination, consider planting red nectar plants alongside deep red or carmine red flowers. This not only attracts bees but also adds depth to the garden. Scarlet and burgundy red flowers can be paired with green shrubs to create a balanced look. These combinations are not only visually appealing but also beneficial for pollinators. The mix of red flowers to attract bees with other colours ensures a diverse and healthy garden ecosystem. Red flowering gardens with these combinations can become a haven for bees, offering them a variety of nectar sources. By choosing the best red-flowering plants for pollinators, a garden with red colour accents can thrive and support local wildlife.

Soil and sunlight for deep red success

Red flowering bee plants thrive best in full sun. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily to produce vibrant blooms. Partial shade can be tolerated, but it may affect the intensity of the red flowers. Wind can be a concern for these plants. To protect them, consider planting near a fence or using windbreaks. The ideal soil for red flowering bee plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy loam or loamy soil types are perfect. Regular fertilisation helps maintain healthy growth. Ensure the soil is not too compact to allow roots to breathe. Moisture levels are crucial. These plants prefer consistently moist soil but avoid waterlogging. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so mulching can help retain moisture. The pH level should be slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.0 to 7.0. This range supports nutrient uptake and vibrant red blooms. Adjusting soil pH can be done with lime or sulphur, depending on the current levels. Incorporating red flowering bee plants into red flowering gardens or red-toned borders can create stunning visual effects with their deep red, carmine, and scarlet hues.

Best time and method to plant red bee plants

Red flowering bee plants can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For plants with root balls, the best time is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The plant spacing for red flowering bee plants depends on the plant type, size at planting, and growth rate. Information about the number of plants per metre is usually found on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry periods to help establish roots. Red flowering gardens benefit from these bright red pollinator plants, adding vibrant red colour accents to any garden.

Maintenance for Red Flowering Bee Plants

Red flowering bee plants, also known as crimson nectar plants or scarlet bee-friendly plants, are a vibrant addition to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive and attract bees.

    • Watering: These plants need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil; if it's dry, water thoroughly in the morning or evening.
    • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools to remove dead or damaged stems.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and mid-summer. This helps maintain their deep red blooms and supports healthy growth.
    • Dividing: If plants become crowded, divide them every 3-4 years in early spring. This promotes better flowering and prevents overcrowding.
    • Winter Protection: In colder areas, mulch around the base to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring. Water well after moving to reduce transplant shock.
For those looking to enhance their red flowering gardens or red-toned borders, consider adding these stunning plants. They not only provide bold colour and nectar but also support local bee populations. To buy red flowering bee plants, explore local nurseries or online options.
