Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Characteristics of bright yellow nectar flowers

Yellow flowering bee plants are a wonderful addition to any garden. These golden bee-friendly plants grow in various forms, from compact bushes to sprawling vines. They can spread widely, creating a vibrant display of colour. The development of these lemon-hued nectar plants begins in early spring. As temperatures rise, they start to sprout, reaching their full size by summer. The blooming period for yellow flowering bee plants typically occurs from late spring to early summer. Factors like climate, weather conditions, and soil quality play a crucial role. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil encourage healthy blooms. The age of the plant and proper care also affect the flowering time. The blooms of these plants come in a range of yellow shades, including pale yellow, lemon yellow, and sun yellow. The specific colour can depend on the plant variety, soil conditions, and sunlight exposure. Proper care and maintenance ensure vibrant colours. Yellow flowering bee plants are known for their subtle fragrance. The scent can vary depending on the plant's age and the time of day. This fragrance attracts bees, enhancing biodiversity in the garden. When fully grown, these bee-attracting yellow plants can reach different heights, depending on the species. Some may grow tall, while others remain low, making them suitable for yellow flowering borders or as accents in a garden with yellow colour accents. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care will help them thrive.

Yellow flowering bee plants are a wonderful addition to any garden. Their leaves can vary in shape, often being oval or lance-shaped, and they come in a range of green shades. The texture might be smooth or slightly hairy, which can help the plant retain moisture. These plants usually keep their leaves throughout the year, providing a consistent green backdrop even in winter. However, some may lose leaves depending on the species and climate conditions.

When it comes to winter hardiness, yellow flowering bee plants are generally resilient. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost can be challenging. The choice of species, wind exposure, and soil conditions all play a role in their survival during winter months.

These plants are often evergreen, meaning they retain their leaves year-round. This characteristic depends on the species and the local climate. In milder climates, they are more likely to stay green, while in harsher conditions, some may shed leaves.

Yellow flowering bee plants are also known for their heat and drought tolerance. Originating from sunny regions, they have adapted to withstand high temperatures. Their leaf structure, sometimes with a waxy coating or fine hairs, helps reduce water loss. A deep root system allows them to access moisture from deeper soil layers.

Regarding toxicity, these plants are generally safe for gardens with children and pets. While some parts might be mildly toxic if ingested, they pose no significant risk with normal garden use.

Yellow flowering bee plants play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity. They provide nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators, contributing to a balanced ecosystem. Their long blooming period and vibrant colours, ranging from pale yellow to golden yellow, make them attractive to insects, enhancing the garden's resilience against pests.

    • Containers: Brighten patios or balconies with yellow flowering bee plants in pots.
    • Underplanting: Add beneath taller plants for a layered effect with sunny flowers for bees.
    • Insect Corner: Designate a space for biodiversity with yellow bee plants.

These yellow flowering gardens not only enhance the garden's beauty but also support the bee population. Consider adding these yellow-toned borders and gardens to create a lively and bee-friendly environment. For those looking to buy yellow flowering bee plants, they are available in various shades like pale yellow, lemon yellow, and sun yellow.

Combining yellow blooms with purples or whites

Yellow flowering bee plants can create a stunning display in the garden when combined with other colours. These bright yellow plants for bees, such as sunflowers and coreopsis, pair beautifully with purple flowers like salvia or verbena. The contrast between the yellow blooms for pollinators and the deep purples creates a vibrant and eye-catching effect. For a softer look, consider combining yellow bee plants with white flowers like daisies or white cosmos. This combination highlights the sunny flowers for bees and adds a touch of elegance to the garden. The mix of yellow flowering gardens with white accents can make the space feel fresh and inviting. These combinations are not only visually appealing but also beneficial for pollinators. Bee-attracting yellow plants provide essential nectar, while the contrasting colours help guide bees to the flowers. Creating a garden with yellow colour accents, such as pale yellow, lemon yellow, or golden yellow, alongside purples or whites, enhances the overall beauty and supports a healthy ecosystem.

Best conditions for colour and nectar quality

Yellow flowering bee plants thrive best in full sun. Sunlight is crucial for these sunny flowers for bees, as it enhances their vibrant yellow hues and nectar production. If planted in partial shade, the colour and nectar quality might diminish. Wind can be a concern for yellow bee plants. To protect them, consider planting them near a fence or hedge to reduce wind exposure. The ideal soil for yellow flowering bee plants is well-draining and rich in nutrients. A sandy or loamy soil type is perfect. Regular fertilisation helps maintain their growth and vibrant colour. Soil moisture is important; these plants prefer a moderately moist environment. Too much wind or sun can dry the soil, so mulching can help retain moisture. Yellow flowering bee plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. A pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing the soil can ensure the best conditions for these golden bee-friendly plants. With the right care, a garden with yellow colour accents can become a haven for bees, featuring lemon-hued nectar plants and yellow-toned borders.

Planting tips for yellow pollinator plants

Yellow flowering bee plants can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For plants with root balls, the best time is spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The distance between yellow bee plants depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the Heijnen product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for yellow flowering gardens. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially in dry periods. This helps establish the plants and encourages vibrant blooms. Yellow flowering borders and gardens benefit from bright yellow plants for bees, adding a splash of sun yellow, lemon yellow, or golden yellow to the garden. These sunny flowers for bees not only enhance the garden with yellow colour accents but also attract pollinators, creating a lively and colourful environment.

Maintenance for Yellow Flowering Bee Plants

Yellow flowering bee plants are a wonderful addition to any garden, providing vibrant colour and attracting bees. Proper care ensures they thrive and bloom beautifully.

    • Watering: These plants need regular watering, especially in dry periods. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly.
    • Pruning: Prune in early spring to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools to remove dead or damaged stems, promoting healthy blooms.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and mid-summer. This supports growth and enhances flowering. Follow package instructions for the right amount.
    • Dividing: If plants become crowded, divide them every 3-4 years in early spring. This helps maintain vigour and encourages more blooms.
    • Winter Protection: In colder areas, mulch around the base to protect roots from frost. This ensures plants survive winter and bloom again.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring or autumn. Water well after moving to reduce stress and help roots establish.
Yellow flowering gardens benefit from these care tips, creating stunning yellow-toned borders and gardens. For those looking to enhance their garden with these vibrant plants, consider options to buy yellow flowering bee plants for a beautiful, bee-friendly space.
