Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Purple Flower Borders: A Guide to Purple Flowering Border Plants

Purple flowering border plants are a popular choice for adding vibrant colour to gardens. These plants, known for their stunning violet and lavender hues, create a striking visual impact. They are often used to define garden edges and add depth to flower beds. Some well-known genera include Salvia, Verbena, and Echinacea, which offer a range of shades from light purple to deep purple. These plants are also referred to as deep purple border flowers or rich purple edge plants. They are perfect for creating purple-flowering gardens and can be combined with other colours for a beautiful contrast. Gardens with purple colour accents often feature these plants to enhance the overall aesthetic. Purple flowering border plants are not only visually appealing but also practical. They attract pollinators, making them ideal for bee-friendly gardens. Using flowering border plants can help create purple-flowering borders that support wildlife. Long-flowering purple border flowers, such as those in the Aconitum and Campanula families, ensure a continuous display throughout the season. Whether aiming for a mauve-coloured border or a garden with amethyst accents, these plants are a versatile choice for any garden enthusiast.

Key features of deep purple edge flowers

Purple flowering border plants are a popular choice for adding colour to gardens. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading widely to create a lush border. They can range from compact to sprawling, depending on the species and growing conditions. The development of purple flowering border plants begins in early spring. They start with small shoots that gradually grow into full plants by summer. The growth rate can vary based on soil quality, sunlight, and watering practices. These plants typically bloom from late spring to early autumn. The exact blooming months depend on the climate and weather conditions. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil can encourage longer flowering periods. The blooms of purple flowering border plants come in shades of lavender, lilac, and violet. The colour intensity can be influenced by the plant variety, soil pH, and sunlight exposure. Some purple flowering border plants are known for their fragrance. The scent can vary from subtle to strong, depending on the plant type and growing conditions. This fragrance can attract bees and other pollinators, making them bee-friendly flowers. When fully grown, these plants can reach different heights, often between 30 cm to 1.5 metres. The mature height depends on the species and care provided. They can be used to create layers in a garden, adding depth and interest. For those looking to enhance their gardens with purple colour accents, consider adding lavender-hued garden borders or violet-toned flowering plants. These options can transform gardens into vibrant, purple-flowering gardens.

Purple flowering border plants are a stunning addition to any garden. These plants have a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be oval, lance-shaped, or heart-shaped, often with a deep green hue. Some may have a slight sheen or a velvety texture. In winter, many purple flowering border plants retain their leaves, adding year-round interest to the garden. However, some may lose their leaves depending on the species and climate conditions.

Winter hardiness is an important factor for purple flowering border plants. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost can be challenging. Choosing the right species and ensuring good soil conditions can help them survive harsh winters. Wind protection is also crucial, as strong winds can damage the plants.

Many purple flowering border plants are evergreen, keeping their leaves throughout the year. This depends on the species and the garden's location. In milder climates, they are more likely to remain green, while in colder areas, they may shed leaves.

These plants are generally heat and drought-tolerant. Their origin and leaf structure, such as a waxy coating or fine hairs, help them conserve water. A deep root system allows them to access moisture from deeper soil layers, making them resilient in dry conditions.

Purple flowering border plants are safe for gardens with children and pets. They are non-toxic and pose no danger when used in normal gardening practices. Always ensure that plants are well-maintained to prevent any accidental ingestion.

These plants play a vital role in supporting biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for insects and birds, enhancing the garden's ecosystem. Long-flowering purple border flowers attract pollinators, making them bee-friendly flowers. By mimicking natural habitats, they help maintain a balanced ecosystem and increase garden resilience against diseases and pests.

Where to use purple tones in structured planting

Purple flowering border plants can transform any garden with their rich hues. These plants, also known as lavender-hued garden borders or violet-toned flowering plants, are perfect for adding depth and biodiversity. Here are some ways to use them in the garden:

    • Border: Create a stunning edge with purple flower borders, using plants like lavender and lilac for a soft, inviting look.
    • Group Planting: Use violet border plants in clusters to form a vibrant display that attracts bees and other pollinators.
    • Solitary Planting: Highlight a single purple flower border plant as a focal point in the garden.
    • Hedge or Screen: Use deep purple plants to form a natural privacy screen or windbreak.
    • Containers: Plant light purple and amethyst-toned flowers in pots for patios or balconies.
    • Wildlife Borders: Choose purple flowering plants for wildlife borders to support local biodiversity.

For those looking to buy purple flowering border plants, consider options that offer long-flowering purple border flowers to enjoy their beauty throughout the season. Gardens with purple colour accents not only look beautiful but also support a healthy ecosystem.

Best companions for purple flowering borders

Purple flowering border plants can create a stunning display in any garden. These plants pair well with a variety of other plant types and species. Consider combining them with silver foliage plants like Artemisia or Lamb's Ear. These plants provide a beautiful contrast with their soft, silvery leaves against the deep purple border flowers. Another great combination is with yellow flowering plants such as Coreopsis or Rudbeckia. The bright yellow blooms stand out against the rich purple edge plants, creating a vibrant and eye-catching display.

For a more subtle look, mix purple flowering plants for wildlife borders with white flowering plants like Shasta Daisies or white Astilbe. This combination offers a classic and elegant appearance. Additionally, adding bee-friendly flowers like Echinacea or Salvia can attract pollinators, enhancing the garden's biodiversity. These combinations not only look beautiful but also support a healthy garden ecosystem.

Using long-flowering purple border flowers ensures that the garden remains colourful throughout the season. Gardens with purple colour accents can be enhanced with light purple, lilac, and violet-coloured plants, creating a harmonious and cohesive look. Whether aiming for a bold or subtle garden design, purple flower borders offer versatility and beauty.

Site and soil preferences for rich colour

Purple flowering border plants thrive best in full sun, but they can also tolerate partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their vibrant colour, with more sun leading to richer hues. These plants are generally not wind-sensitive, but in exposed areas, a windbreak can help protect them. A well-draining soil is crucial for purple flowering border plants. They prefer loamy or sandy soil types, which allow roots to breathe and prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation supports their growth, enhancing the vividness of their blooms. Soil moisture is important; while they need consistent watering, the soil should not be soggy. Wind and sun exposure can dry out the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. The ideal pH for these plants is slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.0 to 7.0. This pH range supports nutrient uptake, promoting healthy growth and vibrant flowers. Factors like soil type and water quality can influence pH, so testing and adjusting as needed ensures optimal conditions for purple flowering border plants.

When and how to plant purple borders

Purple flowering border plants can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For plants with roots or clumps, the best time is spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The plant spacing for purple flowering border plants depends on the type, initial size, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for purple flowering border plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. When planting, water the plants thoroughly and continue to water regularly, especially in dry periods. This helps the plants establish well. Purple flowering border plants, such as deep purple border flowers and rich purple edge plants, add vibrant colour to gardens with purple colour accents. They are also bee-friendly flowers, making them a great choice for gardens with purple-flowering borders.

    Maintenance of Purple Flower Border

Purple flowering border plants add a stunning touch to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive. These plants need well-drained soil and a sunny spot. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, it's time to water. Pruning is vital for healthy growth. Trim in early spring to remove dead or damaged stems. Use sharp shears for clean cuts. Pruning encourages new blooms and maintains shape. Fertilising helps these plants flourish. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and mid-summer. Follow package instructions for the right amount. Watering is crucial. Early morning is best to prevent evaporation. Ensure the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Dividing plants every few years keeps them vigorous. Do this in early spring or autumn. Gently separate roots and replant. Winter protection is important. Mulch around the base to insulate roots. Transplanting is best in spring or autumn. Water well after moving to reduce shock.

    • Ensure well-drained soil and sunny location
    • Prune in early spring for healthy growth
    • Fertilise in spring and mid-summer
    • Water in the morning to maintain moisture
    • Divide plants every few years for vigour
