Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Traits of pure and clean flowering border plants

White flowering border plants are a stunning addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading to create a lush, full appearance. They can range from compact, bushy shapes to taller, more slender forms, making them versatile for different garden designs. The development of white flowering border plants begins in early spring. As temperatures rise, they start to sprout, reaching maturity by late spring or early summer. The growth rate can vary depending on the plant species, soil quality, and care provided. White flowering border plants typically bloom from late spring to early autumn. The blooming period can be influenced by climate, weather conditions, and the plant's age. Proper soil preparation and regular care are essential for a healthy bloom. The flowers of these plants come in various shades of white, including snow-white, pearl-white, and cream-coloured. Factors such as the plant species, soil type, and light exposure can affect the exact hue of the blooms. While not all white flowering border plants are known for their fragrance, some do emit a subtle scent. The intensity of the fragrance can depend on the plant's variety and the time of day, often being more noticeable in the evening. Mature white flowering border plants can reach different heights, depending on the species. Some may grow to a modest height, while others can become quite tall, adding layers and depth to the garden. Choosing the right location and providing proper care will ensure they thrive and enhance the garden's beauty.

White flowering border plants are a beautiful addition to any garden. Their leaves can vary in shape, from oval to lance-shaped, and often have a glossy texture. The colour of the leaves is usually a deep green, which contrasts nicely with the white flowers. These plants may lose their leaves in winter, depending on the species and climate. Some varieties are evergreen, keeping their foliage year-round, while others are deciduous, shedding leaves in colder months. The winter hardiness of white flowering border plants depends on several factors, including temperature and wind exposure. They thrive in well-drained soil and can withstand mild frost, but prolonged freezing temperatures may damage them. Choosing the right species for the local climate is crucial for their survival. These plants are generally heat and drought-tolerant, thanks to their deep root systems and sometimes waxy or hairy leaves that reduce water loss. Originating from various climates, they adapt well to different garden conditions, making them suitable for summer gardens with white colour accents. White flowering border plants are non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They pose no danger when used in normal gardening conditions, providing peace of mind for families. In terms of biodiversity, these plants support garden ecosystems by attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. Their long blooming period and native-like characteristics help maintain ecological balance, offering food and shelter to various garden creatures. This enhances the garden's resistance to pests and diseases, contributing to a healthy, vibrant environment.

How to use white flowers in crisp garden edges

White flowering border plants bring a touch of elegance to any garden. These snow-white garden border plants are perfect for creating a fresh and elegant look. Here are some ways to use them in the garden:

    • Border: Use white flowering border plants to create a crisp edge along pathways or garden beds. They provide a clean and sophisticated look.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups for a stunning display of pearl-white flowering border plants. This creates a striking visual impact.
    • Solitary Planting: Use as a focal point in the garden. A single plant with elegant white flowers can draw attention and add interest.
    • Hedge: Create a low hedge with white border flowers for a soft boundary. This can define spaces without being too imposing.
    • Pot or Planter: Place in pots or planters for flexibility. This allows for easy movement and arrangement in the garden.
    • Underplanting: Use as underplanting for taller plants. The white flowers provide a beautiful contrast and fill in gaps.
    • Evening Garden: White flowering plants for bright borders are perfect for evening gardens. Their light colour reflects moonlight, creating a magical atmosphere.

Consider adding these plants to gardens with white colour accents for a cohesive look. Whether in pure white borders and gardens or mixed with cream-coloured and ivory-tinted varieties, they enhance the overall aesthetic. For those looking to buy white flowering border plants, they are a versatile choice for any garden style.

Pairing white border plants with colour contrasts

White flowering border plants can create stunning contrasts in the garden. These plants, with their elegant white flowers, are perfect for bright borders. They can be combined with evening garden plants to create a serene atmosphere. For a striking effect, pair white-toned border flowers with plants that have deep green foliage or vibrant blooms. Consider combining white border flowers with purple salvia or blue delphiniums. These combinations highlight the pure white garden edges, making them stand out beautifully. Another option is to mix white flowering plants for bright borders with silver-leaved plants like artemisia. This creates a soft white and silver palette that is both elegant and calming. These combinations work well because the white-flowered plants provide a neutral backdrop, allowing other colours to pop. Gardens with white colour accents can appear larger and more open. The use of cream-coloured and ivory-tinted flowers adds depth and interest. White-flowering gardens are versatile and can be adapted to any style, from modern to cottage gardens. By using white flowering border plants, a garden can achieve a timeless and sophisticated look.

Soil and sun needs for white flowering success

White flowering border plants thrive best in full sun to partial shade. These plants need at least six hours of sunlight daily to produce elegant white flowers. However, in very hot climates, some afternoon shade can help prevent wilting. Wind can be a concern for these delicate plants. To protect them, consider planting them near a fence or using windbreaks like hedges. The ideal soil for white flowering border plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. A mix of loam and sand is perfect, as it allows roots to breathe while retaining enough moisture. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth, so adding compost or a balanced fertiliser is beneficial. Soil moisture is crucial for these plants. They prefer consistently moist soil, but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry out the soil quickly, so mulching helps retain moisture. The pH preference for white flowering border plants is slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.0 to 7.0. This range allows the plants to absorb nutrients effectively. Testing the soil pH and adjusting with lime or sulphur can ensure optimal conditions for a stunning display of snow-white garden border plants.

Planting guidance for white edge flowers

White flowering border plants can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For plants with roots or clumps, the best time is spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate are important for successful planting. The distance between white flowering border plants depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Generally, the number of plants per metre is specified on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for white flowering border plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry periods. This helps the plants establish well. White flowering border plants, also known as pure white garden edges or white-toned border flowers, add elegance to any garden. They are perfect for creating white-flowering gardens or white-flowering borders, offering a soft white or ivory-tinted touch. These plants are ideal for gardens with white colour accents, providing a snow white or milky white appearance. Consider using them as evening garden plants to enjoy their elegant white flowers.

Maintenance for Fresh White Flowering Border Plants

White flowering border plants add elegance to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive. Here’s how to maintain these snow-white garden border plants:

    • Watering: Check soil moisture regularly. Water deeply in the morning when the top inch is dry. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
    • Pruning: Prune in early spring to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools to remove dead or damaged stems. This helps maintain shape and promotes healthy blooms.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and mid-summer. Follow package instructions for quantity. Fertilising supports strong growth and vibrant flowers.
    • Dividing: Divide plants every 3-4 years in early spring. This prevents overcrowding and rejuvenates growth. Replant divisions immediately and water well.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base in late autumn to protect roots from frost. Remove mulch in spring as temperatures rise.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring or autumn. Water thoroughly after transplanting and keep soil moist until established.
