Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

What are ground covers full sun?

Full sun ground covers are plants that thrive in areas with direct sunlight. These plants are perfect for gardens that receive a lot of sun throughout the day. They are known for their ability to cover the ground, preventing weeds and adding beauty to the garden. Some popular types include Sedum, Phlox, and Thymus. These plants are not only sun-loving but also drought-tolerant, making them ideal for warm and dry climates. Full sun ground covers are also called bright-light creeping plants. They are often used in gardens to create a lush, green carpet. These plants are perfect for sunny borders and can handle the heat well. They are also known as heat-tolerant low-growing plants, which makes them suitable for Mediterranean-style gardens. In the garden, full sun ground covers are used to fill in spaces and add texture. They are great for creating a cohesive look and can be used in various settings, such as sunny borders or warm sites. These plants are also excellent for summer ground covers, providing a vibrant and lively appearance during the hottest months.

Characteristics of ground plants for bright conditions

Full sun ground covers are perfect for gardens with lots of sunlight. These sun-loving ground plants spread across the soil, creating a lush carpet. They grow low to the ground, often reaching a width of up to 1 metre. This makes them ideal for covering large areas quickly. The development of these heat-tolerant carpet plants starts in early spring. They begin to sprout as temperatures rise, reaching maturity by late summer. The best drought-tolerant ground covers for full sun thrive in well-drained soil and need minimal watering once established. Full sun ground covers bloom in the warmer months, usually from late spring to early summer. The blooming period depends on climate and weather conditions. Warmer temperatures and well-prepared soil can enhance flowering. The flowers of these ground cover plants for full sun come in various colours, including white, yellow, and purple. The specific hue depends on the plant species and soil conditions. Adequate sunlight and care can intensify the colours. Some sun-loving ground covers are known for their pleasant scent. The fragrance can vary, influenced by the plant's leaves and flowers. This adds an extra dimension to the garden, attracting pollinators and enhancing biodiversity. Mature full sun ground covers typically reach a height of 10 to 30 centimetres. This low height makes them suitable for sunny borders and Mediterranean-style gardens. Proper placement and care ensure they thrive, providing a beautiful and functional garden feature.

Full sun ground covers are perfect for bright areas in the garden. These sun-loving ground covers have a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be small and round or long and narrow, often with a glossy or hairy surface to protect against the sun. The colour ranges from deep green to silver, depending on the plant type. Some ground cover plants for full sun keep their leaves all year, while others may lose them in winter, influenced by the plant species and local climate.

When it comes to winter hardiness, ground covers for full sun vary. Some are frost-sensitive, while others can withstand cold temperatures. Factors like wind exposure and soil conditions play a role in their survival. Choosing the right type for the garden's conditions is essential.

Many full sun ground covers are evergreen, providing year-round interest. However, some may drop leaves annually, similar to most perennials. This depends on the plant species and the garden's climate and location.

Heat-tolerant low-growing plants are often drought-tolerant groundcovers, originating from Mediterranean climates. Their leaf structure, sometimes with a waxy coating or fine hairs, helps retain moisture. A deep root system allows them to access water in dry conditions, making them ideal for sunny borders.

Regarding safety, these groundcovers are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They are easy to maintain and pose no risk during regular gardening activities.

Full sun ground covers contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals. They mimic natural habitats, supporting ecosystem balance and increasing garden resilience against pests. These light-loving groundcovers are a valuable addition to any garden, enhancing its beauty and ecological value.

Ideal areas for full sun coverage

Full sun ground covers are perfect for bright, sun-filled gardens. These sun-loving ground plants thrive in areas with plenty of sunlight and are ideal for creating a lush, green carpet. Here are some ways to use full sun ground covers in the garden:

    • Border: Use ground cover plants for full sun to create a neat and attractive border along pathways or garden edges.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups for a dense, uniform look that can withstand heat and drought.
    • Underplanting: These heat-tolerant carpet plants are excellent for underplanting around taller shrubs or trees.
    • Talud: Perfect for covering slopes, providing stability and reducing soil erosion.
    • Bodembedekker: Use as a drought-tolerant groundcover to keep weeds at bay and maintain soil moisture.
    • Insectenhoek: Create a biodiversity zone by mixing different sun-loving groundcovers to attract beneficial insects.
For those looking to buy full sun ground covers, consider options that are both heat-tolerant and drought-resistant. These groundcovers for full sun are ideal for Mediterranean-style gardens and warm sites, ensuring a vibrant and healthy garden all summer long.

Combining with drought-tolerant or floral plants

Full sun ground covers are perfect for creating a vibrant garden. These sun-loving ground covers can be combined with various plant types to enhance the garden's beauty. Pairing them with drought-tolerant plants like sedum or agave creates a low-maintenance garden. These heat-tolerant low-growing plants thrive in sunny borders and warm sites, making them ideal companions for full sun ground covers.

For a more colourful display, consider combining full sun ground covers with bright-light creeping plants such as creeping thyme or creeping phlox. These Mediterranean-style groundcovers add a splash of colour and texture, creating a stunning visual effect. Another great combination is with ornamental grasses, which add movement and contrast to the garden.

These combinations work well because they all share similar growing conditions. Ground cover plants for full sun, like sun-loving groundcovers, thrive in the same environment as drought-tolerant groundcovers. This makes them perfect for creating a cohesive and harmonious garden design. By choosing the best drought-tolerant ground covers for full sun, the garden remains lush and vibrant even in the hottest summer months.

Best soil and drainage for sun exposure

Full sun ground covers thrive in bright sunlight. These sun-loving ground plants need at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Factors like nearby trees or buildings can affect light availability. Wind can be a concern for these heat-tolerant carpet plants. To protect them, consider planting windbreaks or using garden screens. The ideal soil for ground cover plants for full sun is well-draining. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation helps these sun-loving groundcovers grow well. Soil moisture is crucial; too much wind or sun can dry the soil quickly. Ensure the soil retains some moisture but drains excess water. The pH preference for ground covers full sun is slightly acidic to neutral. A pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal. Soil pH can be influenced by rainfall and the type of soil. Regular testing helps maintain the right balance. By providing the right conditions, these groundcovers for sunny borders will flourish, creating a beautiful and resilient garden.

Planting full sun ground covers – timing & care

Full sun ground covers thrive in bright, sunny spots. These sun-loving ground covers can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. The planting distance for ground cover plants for full sun depends on the type, size at planting, and growth rate. Check the plant properties on the Heijnen product page for the number of plants per metre. Proper soil preparation is crucial for these groundcovers. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells. These drought-tolerant groundcovers need less water once established, making them perfect for Mediterranean-style gardens. Choose heat-tolerant covers for sunny borders and warm sites. Light-loving groundcovers are ideal for summer ground covers, providing a lush carpet in bright-light areas.

Maintenance of Ground Cover Plants Full Sun

Full sun ground covers are perfect for bright, sunny spots in the garden. These sun-loving ground plants thrive in warm conditions and require specific care to flourish.

    • Watering: Full sun ground covers need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth.
    • Pruning: Prune these heat-tolerant carpet plants in early spring to remove dead or damaged growth. Use sharp, clean tools to avoid damaging the plants. Pruning helps maintain shape and encourages new growth.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth. Use a slow-release formula to provide nutrients over time. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can harm the plants.
    • Dividing: If the ground covers become too dense, divide them every few years in early spring. This helps rejuvenate the plants and prevents overcrowding.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, provide a layer of mulch to protect the roots from frost. This is especially important for Mediterranean-style groundcovers.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring or autumn. Water thoroughly after moving to help the plants settle in their new location.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider the option to buy full sun ground covers to create a vibrant, sun-drenched landscape.
