Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Herbs Full Sun: What are Full Sun Herb Plants and How are They Used?

Full sun herb plants are those that thrive in areas with plenty of sunlight. These plants are perfect for gardens that receive direct sunlight for most of the day. Some popular full sun herb plants include Thymus, Rosmarinus, Lavandula, Salvia, and Origanum. These herbs are not only beautiful but also useful in cooking and other applications. Full sun herb plants are also known as heat-tolerant culinary herbs. They are ideal for sunny gardens and can withstand high temperatures. These herbs are often referred to as sun-loving herbs or Mediterranean herbs for sunny gardens. They are perfect for creating a fragrant and edible garden space. In the garden, full sun herb plants are used for their culinary and aromatic qualities. They are great for adding flavour to dishes and can be grown in containers as drought-tolerant herbs for containers. These herbs are also excellent for warm borders and can be used as sun-loving perennial herbs. With their preference for sunny spots, they make a wonderful addition to any garden looking to incorporate drought-tolerant aromatic plants.

    Characteristics of heat-tolerant culinary herbs

Full sun herb plants are perfect for gardens that receive plenty of sunlight. These sun-loving herb plants thrive in bright conditions, spreading out to create a lush display. They often grow in a bushy form, with some varieties reaching up to 60 cm in width. The development of these herbs begins in early spring, with new shoots appearing as temperatures rise. By summer, they reach their full size, ready to be harvested. The growth rate can vary depending on the specific type of herb and the care provided. Full sun herb plants typically bloom from late spring to early summer. The exact timing depends on factors like climate, weather conditions, and soil quality. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil encourage earlier blooming. The flowers of these herbs come in various colours, including purple, white, and yellow. The specific hue depends on the species and cultivar. Adequate sunlight and proper care enhance the vibrancy of the blooms. Many full sun herb plants are known for their delightful fragrance. The scent can come from the leaves, stems, or flowers, adding a pleasant aroma to the garden. This fragrance is often more intense in warm, sunny conditions. When fully grown, these herbs can reach heights of 30 to 90 cm. The mature height depends on the type of herb and growing conditions. They are ideal for creating layers in a garden, adding height and interest to sunny borders.

Full sun herb plants are perfect for gardens with plenty of sunlight. These sun-loving herbs have unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Many have small, thick leaves that help them retain moisture. The colours range from deep green to silvery grey, often with a waxy or hairy surface to protect against intense sun. Some full sun herb plants, like rosemary and lavender, keep their leaves in winter, while others may lose them depending on the climate and species.

When it comes to winter hardiness, full sun herb plants vary. Mediterranean herbs for sunny gardens, such as thyme and sage, are quite hardy and can withstand mild frost. However, extreme cold and strong winds can damage them, so choosing the right location and soil conditions is crucial.

Many full sun herb plants are evergreen, meaning they keep their leaves year-round. This is influenced by the type of herb, climate, and location. In warmer climates, these herbs thrive and remain green, while in colder areas, they might lose some foliage.

Heat-tolerant culinary herbs are also drought-tolerant, making them ideal for sunny spots. Their origins in dry regions mean they have adapted to survive with minimal water. Deep root systems and protective leaf structures help them endure hot, dry conditions.

Regarding safety, full sun herb plants are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They are easy to handle and pose no risk when used in normal gardening activities.

These herbs also support biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for insects and birds, enhancing the garden's ecosystem. By planting sun-loving perennial herbs, gardeners can create a balanced environment that resists pests and diseases naturally.

    Combining herbs with sun-friendly vegetables

Full sun herb plants can be beautifully combined with various other plant types in the garden. These sun-loving herbs thrive alongside sun-friendly vegetables like tomatoes and peppers. Mediterranean herbs for sunny gardens, such as rosemary and thyme, pair well with these vegetables, creating a harmonious and productive garden space. For a unique combination, consider planting drought-tolerant herbs for containers like sage and oregano with sun-loving perennial herbs such as lavender. This mix not only looks appealing but also attracts pollinators, enhancing the garden's ecosystem. These combinations are excellent because they share similar growing conditions, requiring minimal water and thriving in full sun. By choosing heat-tolerant culinary herbs, the garden remains vibrant and productive even in warm borders. This thoughtful pairing of herb plants with sun preference ensures a thriving and visually pleasing garden.

Soil, watering and location tips for hot areas

Full sun herb plants thrive in bright, sunny locations. These sun-loving herb plants need at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Factors like nearby structures or trees can affect sunlight exposure, so choose a spot with minimal shade. Wind can be a concern for herbs full sun, as it may dry out the soil quickly. To protect these herbs for sunny spots, consider using windbreaks or planting them near a wall or fence. The ideal soil for herb plants for full sun is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality and support growth. Regular fertilisation helps maintain nutrient levels, promoting healthy sun-loving herbs. Bodemvochtigheid is crucial for full sun herb plants. While they prefer dry conditions, too much wind or sun can lead to rapid moisture loss. Ensure the soil retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged. These herbs prefer a slightly alkaline to neutral pH level. Testing the soil can help determine if adjustments are needed. Mediterranean herbs for the garden, like rosemary and lavender, are excellent examples of heat-tolerant herbs that thrive in these conditions. By understanding these factors, one can successfully grow fragrant plants for sunny spots.

How and when to plant herbs in full sun

Full sun herb plants thrive best when planted in the right conditions. These sun-loving herbs can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. The plant distance for herbs full sun depends on the type, size at planting, and growth rate. Always check the Heijnen product page for specific details on the number of plants per metre. Proper soil preparation is crucial for sun-loving herb plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting culinary herbs for full sun, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells. These heat-tolerant culinary herbs need consistent moisture, especially in the first few weeks. Mediterranean herbs for the garden are drought-tolerant aromatic plants, but initial care is essential for healthy growth. Fragrant plants for sunny spots add beauty and utility to any garden, making them perfect edible plants for full sun.

    Sun Herb Maintenance Tips

Full sun herb plants thrive in bright, sunny conditions. Proper care ensures they flourish in the garden. Here are some tips for maintaining these sun-loving herb plants:

    • Watering: Full sun herb plants need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly in the morning.
    • Pruning: Prune herbs regularly to encourage bushy growth and prevent them from becoming leggy. Use sharp scissors and prune in the early morning or late afternoon.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to boost growth. Use a slow-release fertiliser and follow package instructions for quantity.
    • Dividing: Some sun-loving perennial herbs benefit from dividing every few years. Do this in early spring to rejuvenate the plant and promote healthy growth.
    • Winter Protection: Protect Mediterranean herbs for the garden from frost by covering them with mulch or moving them to a sheltered spot.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant herbs in early spring. Water well after moving to reduce transplant shock.

For those looking to expand their garden, consider adding more sun-loving herb plants. These herbs for sunny spots not only enhance the garden's beauty but also provide fresh culinary herbs for full sun cooking. Explore options to buy full sun herb plants and enjoy a thriving herb garden.
