Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

    What are green ornamental grasses?

Green flowering ornamental grasses are a popular choice for adding texture and movement to gardens. These grasses, such as Deschampsia and Calamagrostis, are known for their subtle green hues and delicate plumes. They are often used in green-flowering gardens to create soft green borders and gardens with green colour accents. These grasses are also referred to as leafy green feature grasses or green-toned grasses. They come in various shades, including lime green, fresh green, and moss green, making them versatile for different garden styles. In the garden, green flowering ornamental grasses are used to add height and structure. They work well in green-flowering borders and gardens with greenish hues. These grasses, like Miscanthus and Carex, are perfect for creating a natural look. They are ideal for gardens with green colour accents and can be combined with other plants to enhance the overall design. For those looking to add a touch of nature, flowering ornamental grasses are an excellent choice.

Key traits of green-toned garden grasses

Green flowering ornamental grasses are a beautiful addition to any garden. These verdant ornamental grasses grow in clumps, spreading gently over time. They can reach a width of up to 60 cm, creating a lush appearance. As they develop, these fresh green garden grasses start as small shoots in early spring. By summer, they reach their full height, showcasing their elegant green plumes. The blooming period for green flowering ornamental grasses typically occurs in late summer. Factors like climate, weather conditions, and soil preparation play a role in their flowering. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil help them thrive. Regular care and attention ensure they bloom beautifully. The bloom colours of these grasses range from lime green to dark green, adding subtle green hues to gardens. The specific shade can depend on the type and cultivar, as well as soil and light conditions. Proper care enhances their vibrant greenish hues. While not known for a strong scent, green flowering ornamental grasses can add a gentle fragrance to the garden. The leaves and stems may release a mild aroma, contributing to biodiversity and a pleasant garden atmosphere. At maturity, these grasses can reach a height of 1 to 1.5 metres. Their height makes them ideal for creating soft green borders and gardens with green colour accents. Choosing the right location and providing proper care will help them reach their full potential.

Green flowering ornamental grasses are a beautiful addition to any garden. These leafy green feature grasses have a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. The leaves can be narrow or broad, with shades ranging from lime green to dark green. Some grasses have a smooth texture, while others may feel slightly rough. In winter, many green-toned grasses keep their leaves, adding year-round interest to gardens with green colour accents.

The winter hardiness of green flowering ornamental grasses depends on several factors. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost can be challenging. Choosing the right type for the local climate and ensuring they are planted in well-drained soil can improve their resilience. Wind protection is also important to prevent damage during cold spells.

These grasses are often evergreen, maintaining their fresh green appearance throughout the year. However, some may lose their leaves in colder climates. The choice of species and the garden's location play a role in whether they remain green all year.

Green flowering ornamental grasses are generally heat and drought-tolerant. Their deep root systems help them access water during dry periods. The leaf structure, sometimes with a waxy coating, reduces water loss, making them suitable for gardens with greenish hues in hot climates.

These grasses are safe for gardens with children and pets. They are non-toxic and pose no danger when used in normal gardening conditions. Always ensure that any plant is used safely in the garden environment.

Green flowering ornamental grasses support biodiversity by providing habitats and food for insects. Their long-lasting blooms and subtle green grasses create a balanced ecosystem, enhancing the garden's resistance to pests. They are ideal for green-flowering gardens and soft green borders, offering a natural look with green plumes.

Where to use green grasses in naturalistic planting

Green flowering ornamental grasses are a versatile choice for any garden. These verdant ornamental grasses add a fresh green touch to various garden settings. Here are some ways to use them:

    • Border: Use green flowering ornamental grasses to create soft green borders and gardens. They provide a subtle green backdrop that enhances other plants.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups for a lush greenery effect. This works well in gardens with green colour accents, offering a mix of greenish hues like lime green and moss green.
    • Solitary: As a solitary plant, these grasses can stand out with their green plumes, adding interest to any garden.
    • Pot or Planter: Place in pots or planters for a fresh green display on patios or balconies.
    • Windbreak: Use as a windscreen to protect more delicate plants while adding a natural look.
    • Privacy Screen: Create a privacy screen with these grasses, offering a natural barrier with their height and density.
    • Insect Corner: Attract beneficial insects by incorporating these grasses into a biodiversity zone.

Consider these options when planning a garden with green flowering ornamental grasses. They bring a touch of nature with their subtle green tones and are perfect for green-flowering gardens.

Pairing green flowering grasses with wildflowers

Green flowering ornamental grasses can create a stunning effect in the garden when combined with other plant types. These leafy green feature grasses work well with wildflowers, adding a natural and soft green border to any garden. Consider pairing them with echinacea or rudbeckia for a vibrant contrast. The subtle green grasses provide a calming backdrop, allowing the bright colours of the wildflowers to stand out. Another beautiful combination is with sedum and asters. The green-toned grasses complement the pink and purple hues of these flowers, creating a harmonious look. The grasses with green plumes add texture and movement, enhancing the overall appeal of the garden. These combinations are not only visually appealing but also beneficial for creating green-flowering gardens. The greenish hues of the grasses bring a fresh green touch to the garden, while the wildflowers attract pollinators. This mix of green ornamental grasses and wildflowers is perfect for those looking to create green-flowering borders or gardens with green colour accents. The lime green and moss green tones of the grasses add depth and interest, making them a versatile choice for any garden design.

Soil and position tips for thriving green foliage

Green flowering ornamental grasses thrive best in full sun to partial shade. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily, but can tolerate some shade, especially in hotter climates. Wind can affect these grasses, so planting them near a fence or hedge can provide protection. The ideal soil for green flowering ornamental grasses is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are perfect, as they allow water to drain while retaining essential nutrients. Regular fertilisation helps promote healthy growth. These grasses prefer moderate soil moisture. Too much wind or sun can dry the soil quickly, so mulching can help retain moisture. It's important to water them regularly, especially during dry spells. Green flowering ornamental grasses thrive in slightly acidic to neutral pH levels, around 6.0 to 7.0. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing the soil can ensure optimal conditions. Incorporating these verdant ornamental grasses into green-flowering gardens or soft green borders can add a fresh green touch. Their subtle green hues, from lime to moss green, enhance gardens with green colour accents.

Planting green grasses – timing and spacing

Green flowering ornamental grasses can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls, the best time is spring or autumn. The planting distance for green flowering ornamental grasses depends on the type, size at planting, and growth rate. Generally, the number of plants per metre is specified on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for these grasses. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the grass, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially in dry periods. These leafy green feature grasses thrive in gardens with green colour accents, adding subtle green hues to soft green borders and gardens. Whether aiming for lime green, fresh green, or moss green tones, these green-toned grasses enhance any green-flowering garden.

Ongoing Care for Green Flowering Ornamental Grasses

Green flowering ornamental grasses add a touch of elegance to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive and maintain their lush appearance.

    • Watering: These grasses prefer moist soil. Water in the morning to allow the soil to dry by evening. Check the soil moisture regularly; if it feels dry, it's time to water.
    • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Use sharp shears to remove dead or damaged stems, promoting healthy growth.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Repeat every 6-8 weeks during the growing season to encourage vibrant growth.
    • Dividing: Divide every 3-4 years in early spring to prevent overcrowding. This helps maintain their vigour and promotes new growth.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, add a layer of mulch around the base to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring or autumn. Water thoroughly after transplanting to help establish roots.
For those looking to enhance their garden with these verdant ornamental grasses, consider the variety of greenish hues available, from lime green to moss green. Whether in green-flowering gardens or soft green borders, these grasses offer a fresh green touch. To explore options, consider the opportunity to buy green flowering ornamental grasses for a vibrant garden.
