Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

These grasses are also referred to as patio feature grasses or deck and balcony grasses. They are versatile and can be used to create a focal point in a garden or to complement other plants. Potted grasses are perfect for those who want to add greenery without the need for a large garden space. Ornamental grasses for pots are used to enhance the visual appeal of outdoor areas. They are great for creating privacy screens or adding height to a garden. These grasses are also suitable for raised beds and planters, providing a lush look with minimal effort. Traits of patio feature grasses and deck-friendly types

Ornamental grasses for pots or planters are a great choice for adding texture and movement to any garden. These grasses grow in various forms, often with arching leaves that spread gracefully. They can range from compact clumps to more spreading types, making them ideal for different container sizes. The development of ornamental grasses for pots or planters starts in early spring. As temperatures rise, new shoots emerge, gradually filling out the container. By summer, they reach their full size, providing a lush display. The blooming period for these grasses varies, often occurring in late summer to early autumn. Factors like climate, temperature, and care influence their flowering. Warmer climates may see earlier blooms, while cooler areas might delay the process. The bloom colours of ornamental grasses for pots or planters can range from subtle greens to striking purples and reds. The specific hue depends on the species and cultivar, as well as soil conditions and sunlight exposure. Some ornamental grasses are known for their pleasant scent, especially when the wind rustles through their leaves. This fragrance can enhance the garden experience, attracting beneficial insects and adding to biodiversity. Mature ornamental grasses for pots or planters can reach heights of 30 to 150 cm, depending on the variety. Choosing the right height is important for maintaining sightlines and creating a layered look in the garden. Proper care and placement ensure they thrive, making them a versatile choice for any outdoor space.

Ornamental grasses for pots or planters offer a unique touch to any garden. These patio feature grasses come in various shapes and colours. Leaves can be narrow or broad, with shades ranging from deep green to golden yellow. Some have a smooth texture, while others are feathery. In winter, many ornamental grasses for pots retain their leaves, adding year-round interest. However, some may lose their foliage depending on the species and climate conditions.

Winter hardiness is crucial for ornamental grasses for pots and containers. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost can be challenging. Choosing the right species and ensuring good soil drainage can help. Wind protection is also important, as strong gusts can damage the leaves.

Most ornamental grasses for pots are evergreen, keeping their leaves throughout the year. This depends on the type of grass and the local climate. In milder areas, they are more likely to stay green, while in colder regions, they might go dormant.

Heat and drought resistance are key features of deck and balcony grasses. Their origin often influences their ability to withstand dry conditions. Many have a waxy coating or fine hairs on their leaves, reducing water loss. Deep root systems help them access moisture from the soil, making them suitable for hot, dry spots.

Ornamental grasses for pots are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. They are easy to maintain and pose no harm when used in typical garden settings.

These grasses enhance biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals. They mimic natural habitats, supporting a balanced ecosystem. By choosing the best grasses for containers and patios, gardens become more resilient to pests and diseases.

When selecting ornamental grasses for pots and containers, consider the best grasses for containers and patios. These easy ornamental grasses for pots are ideal for creating a beautiful and low-maintenance garden space. Whether you want to buy ornamental grasses for pots or containers, these options will transform your outdoor area.

Combining grasses with seasonal pot companions

Ornamental grasses for pots or planters can create stunning displays when combined with other plant types. These grasses, such as patio feature grasses and deck and balcony grasses, work well with a variety of seasonal companions. Consider pairing them with colourful annuals like petunias or marigolds for a vibrant look. For a more subtle combination, mix with compact evergreens or succulents, which provide texture and contrast. One beautiful combination is using ornamental grasses for pots alongside herbs like lavender or thyme. This not only adds fragrance but also attracts pollinators. Another option is to pair grasses for containers with trailing plants like ivy or sweet potato vine, which can cascade over the edges of the pot, adding depth and interest. These combinations are effective because they balance height and texture, creating a dynamic visual effect. The grasses provide movement and structure, while the companion plants add colour and variety. This makes them ideal for patios, balconies, and raised beds, offering a versatile and easy way to enhance any garden space.

Best compost, drainage and sunlight for potted grasses

Ornamental grasses for pots or planters thrive best in full sun. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily to grow well. If placed in partial shade, growth may slow down. Wind can affect these grasses, especially on balconies or patios. To protect them, consider using windbreaks or placing them in sheltered spots. The ideal soil for ornamental grasses in containers is well-draining compost. A mix of loam-based compost with added grit or perlite ensures good drainage. Regular feeding with a balanced fertiliser supports healthy growth. Soil moisture is crucial for potted ornamental grasses. They prefer consistently moist soil but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry out the soil quickly, so regular watering is essential. The pH preference for these grasses is neutral to slightly acidic. A pH level between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal. Factors like water quality and compost type can influence soil pH, so testing and adjusting as needed can help maintain the right balance. Ornamental grasses for pots and containers are perfect for adding texture and movement to any garden space, whether on a patio, balcony, or in raised beds.

Planting and potting guide for ornamental grasses

Ornamental grasses for pots or planters can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are best. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate affect planting success. When planting ornamental grasses, consider the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. The number of plants per metre depends on these factors and is usually listed on the product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the grass, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly thereafter, especially in dry periods. This ensures healthy growth of patio feature grasses and deck and balcony grasses. Compact grasses for patios and grasses for balcony planting thrive with the right care. Remember, ornamental grasses for pots and containers add beauty and texture to any garden space.

    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season for healthy growth.
    • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years to refresh soil and provide more space for roots.
    • Winter Protection: Move pots to a sheltered spot or wrap them in bubble wrap to protect roots from frost.
    • Dividing: Divide every 3-4 years in spring to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding.
    • Placement: Choose a sunny spot for most ornamental grasses, but check specific light needs for each variety.
