Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Discover the charm of hardy evergreen grasses and explore the variety of ornamental grass options available. These frost-hardy ornamental grasses are not only beautiful but also practical, making them an ideal choice for any garden enthusiast.

    What defines hardy evergreen grasses?

Hardy ornamental grasses are plants that can withstand cold weather and are perfect for UK winters. These grasses, such as Miscanthus, Calamagrostis, and Festuca, are known for their ability to survive harsh conditions. They are often referred to as winterproof landscaping grasses or frost-resistant grasses. These grasses are not only strong but also add beauty to gardens throughout the year. Hardy ornamental grasses are used in gardens to create texture and movement. They are ideal for adding structure and interest, especially during the colder months when other plants may not thrive. These grasses are perfect for creating a natural look and can be used in various garden designs. They are also great for providing shelter and food for wildlife, making them a valuable addition to any garden. With their ability to endure cold weather, these grasses are a reliable choice for gardeners looking to maintain a vibrant garden all year round.

Traits of cold-hardy and winterproof grass varieties

Hardy ornamental grasses, also known as frost-resistant garden grasses or cold-hardy decorative grasses, are perfect for gardens in colder regions. These grasses grow in clumps and can spread up to 1 metre wide, depending on the species. They develop from small shoots in spring and reach maturity by late summer, providing structure and movement in the garden. The blooming period for hardy ornamental grasses varies, but many flower from late summer to early autumn. Factors like climate, weather conditions, and soil preparation influence their blooming. In colder climates, these grasses are valued for their ability to withstand harsh winters. The colour of hardy ornamental grasses can range from green to shades of red and gold, influenced by the type, soil quality, and light exposure. Some species may change colour with the seasons, adding visual interest throughout the year. While not all hardy ornamental grasses are known for their scent, some may have a subtle fragrance, especially when the wind rustles through their leaves. This can enhance the sensory experience in a garden. Mature hardy ornamental grasses can reach heights of 1 to 2 metres, depending on the variety and care. They are ideal for creating layers in the garden and can be combined with other plants for a diverse landscape. Consider planting them in a spot where they can sway in the breeze, adding movement and texture to the garden.

Hardy ornamental grasses are a popular choice for gardens due to their unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. These grasses often have narrow, arching leaves that can be green, blue, or even variegated. The texture can range from smooth to slightly rough, depending on the species. In winter, many hardy ornamental grasses retain their leaves, providing year-round interest. Factors like species choice and climate influence whether they keep their foliage through the colder months.

Winterproof landscaping grasses are known for their frost resistance. They can withstand low temperatures and harsh winds, making them ideal for UK winters. The period of frost and soil conditions also play a role in their survival. Choosing the right type of frost-hardy ornamental grasses ensures they thrive even in cold weather.

Most hardy evergreen grasses maintain their foliage throughout the year, unlike many perennials that shed leaves annually. The choice of species and the garden's location can affect this. In milder climates, these grasses are more likely to stay green all year.

These grasses are also heat and drought-resistant. Originating from regions with dry climates, they often have deep root systems and a waxy leaf coating to conserve moisture. This makes them suitable for gardens with varying water availability.

Hardy ornamental grasses are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They pose no danger when used in typical garden settings.

In terms of biodiversity, these grasses support ecosystems by providing food and shelter for wildlife. They mimic natural habitats and help maintain garden balance, making them a valuable addition to any garden focused on sustainability.

Where to plant hardy grasses in exposed areas

Hardy ornamental grasses are perfect for adding texture and movement to any garden. These frost-resistant garden grasses thrive in various settings, making them a versatile choice for UK gardens. Here are some ways to use hardy ornamental grasses in the garden:

    • Border: Use hardy ornamental grasses to create a natural border that adds height and interest.
    • Group planting: Plant in groups for a lush, full look that can withstand cold weather.
    • Solitary: A single, strong ornamental grass can serve as a striking focal point.
    • Hedge or boundary: These grasses can form a low-maintenance hedge or boundary.
    • Pot or planter: Ideal for patios, hardy grasses in pots can be moved as needed.
    • Ground cover: Use as a ground cover to protect soil and add greenery year-round.
    • Windbreak: Plant as a windbreak to shield more delicate plants from harsh winds.
    • Privacy screen: Create a natural privacy screen with tall, dense grasses.
    • Insect corner: Attract beneficial insects by planting in a dedicated biodiversity zone.

Consider these cold-hardy decorative grasses for year-round interest and resilience in harsh winters. For those looking to buy hardy ornamental grasses, these options are both practical and beautiful.

Best companions for resilient garden structure

Hardy ornamental grasses are a great choice for creating a strong garden structure. These grasses can be combined with various plant types to enhance the garden's beauty and resilience. Frost-resistant grasses, like Miscanthus and Pennisetum, pair well with hardy evergreen shrubs such as Boxwood or Holly. These combinations provide year-round interest and structure, even in harsh winters. For a more colourful display, consider mixing hardy ornamental grasses with perennials like Echinacea or Rudbeckia. These plants add vibrant colours and attract pollinators, creating a lively garden scene. Another option is to plant grasses that survive cold weather alongside evergreen ferns, which offer contrasting textures and maintain greenery throughout the year. These combinations work well because hardy ornamental grasses provide a strong backbone to the garden, while the accompanying plants add colour and texture. The grasses' ability to withstand cold weather ensures the garden remains attractive even in winter. By choosing frost-hardy ornamental grasses and their companions, the garden will thrive in UK winters, offering beauty and structure all year round.

Soil and site tips for cold-season performance

Hardy ornamental grasses thrive in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Sunlight is crucial for their growth, as it helps maintain their vibrant colours and strong structure. These grasses are generally wind-resistant, but in exposed areas, a windbreak can be beneficial to prevent damage. The ideal soil for hardy ornamental grasses is well-draining and fertile. Sandy or loamy soils are preferred, as they allow excess water to escape, preventing root rot. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth, especially in nutrient-poor soils. Moisture levels are important for these grasses. They prefer moderate moisture, but can withstand dry spells once established. Wind and sun exposure can increase evaporation, so mulching helps retain soil moisture. The pH preference for hardy ornamental grasses is slightly acidic to neutral. A pH range of 6.0 to 7.0 is ideal, as it ensures nutrient availability. Soil testing can help determine the pH level and guide any necessary adjustments. These frost-resistant garden grasses are perfect for year-round interest, providing structure and movement in the garden even during harsh winters.

Planting guidance for hardy grass types

Hardy ornamental grasses can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls, it's best to plant in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. When considering plant spacing, the type and size of the grass at planting time are important. Growth rate and the number of plants per metre also matter. Information on the number of plants per metre is usually available on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for hardy ornamental grasses. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the grass, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells to help establish roots. Hardy ornamental grasses, also known as winterproof landscaping grasses, are ideal for creating a resilient garden. They are frost-resistant and suitable for year-round planting, making them perfect for harsh winters. These cold-hardy grass species add texture and movement to any garden, providing interest even in the colder months.

    Maintenance for Hardy Ornamental Grasses

Hardy ornamental grasses are perfect for adding texture to any garden. These frost-resistant garden grasses require specific care to thrive.

    • Watering: Ensure the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Water in the morning to allow the soil to dry during the day. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if dry, it's time to water.
    • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Use sharp shears to remove dead foliage, promoting healthy growth.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Use sparingly to avoid over-fertilising, which can harm the plant.
    • Dividing: Divide every 3-4 years in early spring to maintain vigour. This helps prevent overcrowding and encourages new growth.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base in late autumn to protect roots from harsh winters. This is crucial for overwintering grasses.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring. Water thoroughly after transplanting to help establish roots.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider adding hardy evergreen grasses. These strong ornamental grasses for colder regions are ideal for year-round beauty. To explore options, buy hardy ornamental grasses for a stunning garden display.

Frequently Asked Questions Hardy ornamental grasses

What function can winter-hardy ornamental grasses have in a garden?

Winter-hardy ornamental grasses serve multiple functions in gardens: providing year-round interest with their foliage, creating soft borders, adding vertical structure, and serving as focal points. They are excellent for blending with perennials to create movement and contrast, and their resilience makes them a practical choice for low-maintenance landscapes.

Which is the best period for transplanting winter-hardy ornamental grasses?

The best transplanting period for winter-hardy ornamental grasses is during their dormancy in late autumn or before new growth starts in early spring. This timing minimizes stress on the plants and allows them to establish in the new location before the onset of extreme weather.

Which plants can be combined well with winter-hardy ornamental grasses?

Complementing these grasses with perennials, shrubs, and bee-friendly plants can create an attractive and diverse garden setting. Ferns and hardy plants can be paired with grasses to enhance texture and contrast, while flowering perennials offer a succession of blooms throughout the growing season.

In which soil type do most winter-hardy ornamental grasses grow well?

Winter-hardy ornamental grasses are adaptable to a range of soil types, yet they typically prefer well-drained soil. They can tolerate a certain degree of variability, from sandy to loamy soils, as long as the area does not remain waterlogged which could potentially harm the plant's root system.

What popular types of winter-hardy ornamental grasses are there?

Among the popular winter-hardy ornamental grasses are Carex morrowii 'Variegata' and 'Goldband', which provide variegated foliage, and Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Overdam', known for its striking vertical lines. Miscanthus sinensis 'Ferner Osten' offers dramatic plumes, while Stipa tenuissima 'Ponytails' adds a soft texture to the landscape.

In what period can I best plant winter-hardy ornamental grasses?

The optimal time for planting winter-hardy ornamental grasses is during the cooler months of early spring or late autumn. This allows the grasses to establish their root systems while the soil is moist and the temperatures are mild, which supports robust growth when warmer weather arrives.
