Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

    What are short ornamental grasses?

Low ornamental grasses are a popular choice for adding texture and interest to gardens. These grasses, such as Festuca, Carex, and Luzula, are known for their compact size and versatility. Often referred to as short ornamental grasses or small landscaping grasses, they are perfect for creating low-maintenance garden edges and borders. These grasses are used in gardens to provide a neat and tidy appearance. They are ideal for front of borders and garden edges, offering a soft contrast to more structured plants. Compact grass varieties like Hakonechloa and Ophiopogon are excellent for areas where space is limited. Low-growing ornamental grasses are also known as compact grasses or border grasses. They are perfect for those looking to add greenery without overwhelming the space. These grasses are often used as edge-suitable grasses, providing a natural transition between different garden areas. For those interested in combining these grasses with other plants, consider using them alongside hedge plants for a cohesive look.

Features of short and tidy garden grass varieties

Low ornamental grasses are perfect for adding texture and movement to a garden. These compact grasses grow in clumps, spreading gently to form a neat border. They are ideal for front of borders and garden edges, providing a tidy appearance. The growth pattern of these small ornamental grasses is dense, making them suitable for low border grasses. The development of low ornamental grasses begins in early spring. As temperatures rise, these grasses start to sprout, reaching maturity by late summer. They thrive in well-drained soil and prefer full sun to partial shade. Regular watering and occasional trimming help maintain their compact form. Low ornamental grasses typically bloom from late spring to early summer. The flowering period can vary depending on climate and care. Warmer temperatures and well-prepared soil encourage more vibrant blooms. These grasses are often chosen for their ability to withstand different weather conditions. The bloom colours of low ornamental grasses range from subtle greens to golden hues. Factors like soil type, light exposure, and the specific grass variety influence the intensity of these colours. Compact garden grasses are known for their understated elegance, adding a soft touch to any garden. While low ornamental grasses are not primarily known for their scent, some varieties may have a mild fragrance. This can be more noticeable during the blooming period. The scent is generally subtle, contributing to the overall sensory experience of the garden. Mature low ornamental grasses typically reach heights below knee level, making them perfect for maintaining sightlines in a garden. Their compact nature allows for easy integration with other plants, creating a layered effect. Choosing the right location and providing proper care ensures these grasses remain a beautiful feature in any garden.

Low-growing ornamental grasses are a popular choice for adding texture and movement to gardens. These compact grasses often have narrow, arching leaves that can vary in colour from deep green to blue-grey. The leaf structure is typically fine and delicate, which allows them to sway gracefully in the wind. Some varieties may lose their leaves in winter, while others remain evergreen, depending on the species and climate conditions. The winter hardiness of low ornamental grasses depends on factors like temperature and wind exposure. They generally tolerate mild frost, but prolonged cold periods can affect their growth. Choosing the right species for the local climate and ensuring proper soil drainage can enhance their resilience. Many low ornamental grasses are evergreen, maintaining their foliage year-round. However, some may shed leaves annually, influenced by species choice and environmental conditions. In warmer climates, they are more likely to stay green throughout the year. These grasses are also known for their heat and drought resistance. Originating from regions with dry climates, they often have deep root systems and a waxy leaf coating that helps retain moisture. This makes them suitable for gardens with limited water availability. Low-growing ornamental grasses are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They pose no danger when used in typical garden settings. In terms of biodiversity, these grasses provide shelter and food for various insects and small animals. Their long-lasting blooms and ability to mimic natural habitats support ecosystem balance, making them a valuable addition to any garden.

Where to use low-growing grasses for structure and space

Low-growing ornamental grasses, also known as dwarf decorative grasses or compact garden grasses, are perfect for adding structure and texture to any garden. These compact grasses are versatile and can be used in various ways to enhance garden design. Here are some ideas on how to use low ornamental grasses effectively:

    • Border: Use low ornamental grasses for front of borders to create a neat and attractive edge.
    • Group Planting: Plant small ornamental grasses in groups for a lush, cohesive look.
    • Edge: Ideal as small grasses for garden edges, providing a tidy finish.
    • Pot or Planter: Compact grass varieties thrive in pots, adding greenery to patios or balconies.
    • Underplanting: Use as underplanting to complement taller plants and fill gaps.
    • Talud: Perfect for stabilising slopes with their dense root systems.
    • Privacy Screen: Short ornamental grasses can act as a low privacy screen or windbreak.
    • Insect Zone: Create a biodiversity zone by planting grasses that attract beneficial insects.
Consider these options when planning to buy low ornamental grasses for your garden. These small ornamental grasses not only add beauty but also serve practical purposes, making them a valuable addition to any outdoor space.

Combinations with taller grasses and blooms

Low ornamental grasses can be beautifully combined with taller grasses and vibrant blooms in the garden. These small landscaping grasses, like compact ornamental grasses, create a stunning contrast when paired with taller varieties such as Miscanthus or Pampas grass. The low-growing ornamental grasses provide a soft, textured base that highlights the height and movement of taller grasses. For a striking combination, consider planting low ornamental grasses for front of borders alongside colourful perennials like Echinacea or Rudbeckia. These small grasses for garden edges add structure and definition, while the bright blooms bring a splash of colour. Another great pairing is with compact grass varieties and tall, elegant flowers like Delphiniums or Foxgloves. These combinations work well because the low border grasses offer a neat, tidy appearance, making the taller plants stand out. The contrast in height and texture creates visual interest and depth in the garden. Additionally, edge-suitable grasses are perfect for defining pathways or garden edges, ensuring a well-organised and attractive outdoor space. By using grasses below knee height, the garden gains a layered look that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Site and soil tips for small grass success

Low ornamental grasses thrive in full sun to partial shade. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily, but can tolerate some shade. Wind can affect these grasses, so planting them near a wall or hedge can provide protection. The ideal soil for low ornamental grasses is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality and support growth. Regular fertilisation helps maintain healthy plants. These grasses prefer moderate soil moisture. Too much wind or sun can dry the soil, so mulching can help retain moisture. The pH level should be neutral to slightly acidic, around 6.0 to 7.0. Testing the soil can ensure the right conditions for growth. Compact garden grasses, also known as dwarf decorative grasses, are perfect for borders and edges. They stay below knee height, making them ideal for small spaces. Compact grass varieties add texture and interest to any garden. Low border grasses are versatile and can be used in various garden designs. Small ornamental grasses are a great choice for creating a neat and tidy look. Compact ornamental grasses are easy to maintain and provide year-round interest.

How and when to plant compact grasses

Low ornamental grasses can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls, the best time is spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The distance between low-growing ornamental grasses depends on the type, initial size, and growth rate. Generally, the number of plants per metre is specified on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for compact grasses. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Before planting, loosen the soil to allow roots to spread easily. When planting small ornamental grasses, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially during dry spells, to help the grasses establish. Compact ornamental grasses require minimal maintenance but benefit from occasional trimming to maintain their shape and encourage new growth.

Easy-care advice for small ornamental grasses

Low ornamental grasses, also known as dwarf decorative grasses or compact garden grasses, are perfect for adding texture to any garden. These short ornamental grasses require minimal care, making them ideal for busy gardeners.

    • Care and Maintenance: Low-growing ornamental grasses thrive in well-drained soil and full sun. Regularly remove dead foliage to keep them looking neat.
    • Pruning Advice: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Use sharp shears to cut back to a few inches above the ground, promoting healthy growth.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Use sparingly, as too much can lead to excessive growth.
    • Watering: Water during dry spells, ensuring the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Check soil moisture by inserting a finger into the soil.
    • Dividing: Divide every 3-4 years in early spring to rejuvenate and prevent overcrowding. Replant divisions immediately.
    • Winter Protection: Most compact grass varieties are hardy, but a mulch layer can protect roots in severe cold.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring or autumn. Water well after transplanting and monitor for stress.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider the option to buy low ornamental grasses to create beautiful, low-maintenance borders.
