Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

What defines a blue perennial and where does it thrive?

Blue flowering perennials are plants that return year after year, offering stunning blue blooms. These plants are perfect for adding a splash of colour to any garden. Blue perennials, such as Geranium, Veronica, and Salvia, thrive in various conditions, making them versatile choices for gardeners. They are often used in blue-flowering gardens and blue-flowering borders, providing a calming effect with their indigo blue, cobalt blue, and lavender blue hues. These blue-hued garden perennials are also known as blue-toned perennial blooms. They are ideal for creating gardens with blue colour accents. Blue flowering plants for borders are popular because they are easy to care for and bring a touch of elegance to any space. Some well-known varieties include Nepeta and Campanula, which are loved for their vibrant ocean blue and sapphire blue shades. Incorporating flowering perennials into a garden design can transform the space into a serene retreat. Whether aiming for light blue or dark blue tones, these plants offer endless possibilities for creativity and beauty in the garden.

Traits of azur blue, sky blue and soft blue flowers

Blue flowering perennials are a stunning addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading widely to create a lush display. They can range from compact clumps to sprawling ground covers, making them versatile for different garden designs. The development of blue flowering perennials begins in early spring, with shoots emerging as the soil warms. By summer, they reach their full height, showcasing vibrant blooms. The blooming months for blue flowering perennials vary, often starting in late spring and continuing through summer. Factors like climate, weather conditions, and soil preparation play a crucial role. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil encourage a longer blooming period. The colour of these perennials can range from indigo blue to light blue, influenced by the specific species, soil pH, and sunlight exposure. Some blue flowering perennials are known for their fragrance, adding an aromatic layer to the garden. The scent can vary in intensity, often strongest in the flowers and sometimes in the leaves. The mature height of these perennials depends on the species and growing conditions, typically ranging from 30 cm to over 1 metre. Proper care and placement in the garden can enhance their growth and visual impact. For those looking to ground-covering perennials, these blue beauties offer a perfect choice for creating blue-flowering gardens and borders.

Blue flowering perennials are a stunning addition to any garden. Their leaves can vary in shape, from narrow and elongated to broad and rounded. The colour of the leaves is typically a deep green, providing a perfect backdrop for the vibrant blue blooms. The texture of the leaves can be smooth or slightly hairy, which helps in retaining moisture. These plants usually keep their leaves throughout the winter, depending on the species and climate conditions.

When it comes to winter hardiness, blue flowering perennials are generally resilient. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost can be challenging. The choice of species, wind exposure, and soil conditions all play a role in their survival during winter months.

Most blue flowering perennials are evergreen, meaning they retain their leaves year-round. However, some may shed leaves annually, influenced by the specific type and local climate. Positioning in the garden can also affect their leaf retention.

These perennials are often heat and drought-tolerant, thanks to their origin and leaf structure. A waxy coating or fine hairs on the leaves can reduce water loss. A deep root system allows them to access moisture from deeper soil layers, making them suitable for perennials for dry soil.

Blue flowering perennials are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no risk, and they can be handled safely during gardening activities.

These plants contribute significantly to biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for insects and birds, supporting a balanced ecosystem. Their long blooming period and insect-friendly nature make them ideal for enhancing garden biodiversity.

Great plant partners for blue flowering types

Blue flowering perennials can create stunning displays in any garden. These blue-hued garden perennials pair beautifully with a variety of other plant types. Consider combining them with silver-foliage plants like Artemisia or Lamb's Ear. The contrast between the blue-toned perennial blooms and the silvery leaves is striking. Another great combination is with yellow flowering plants such as Coreopsis or Rudbeckia. The bright yellow flowers highlight the cool tones of the blue perennials, creating a vibrant garden scene.

For a more subtle look, mix blue flowering perennials with white blooms like Shasta Daisies or white Astilbe. This combination offers a classic and elegant appearance. Additionally, grasses like Festuca or Pennisetum can add texture and movement to gardens with blue colour accents. These combinations not only enhance the beauty of blue-flowering gardens but also provide a variety of heights and textures.

Blue flowering plants for borders are perfect for creating ocean blue borders and gardens. They are easy-care blue perennials, making them ideal for gardeners seeking low-maintenance options. Incorporating Tall perennials can add height and drama to blue-flowering borders. Whether using indigo blue, cobalt blue, or lavender blue, these plants bring a sense of calm and elegance to any garden space.

Soil and sun needs for blue perennials

Blue flowering perennials, also known as sky-blue perennials or azure perennials, thrive best in full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their vibrant blue hues, making them ideal for blue-flowering gardens. These plants are not particularly wind-sensitive, but providing a windbreak can help protect them in exposed areas. The ideal soil for blue perennials is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Regular fertilisation supports their growth, especially in gardens with blue colour accents. Maintaining soil moisture is crucial; too much sun or wind can dry the soil, while a good balance keeps the blue perennial flowers healthy. Blue flowering perennials prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. This pH range enhances their indigo blue and cobalt blue shades, perfect for blue-flowering borders. Adjusting the soil pH can be necessary to achieve the desired sapphire blue or ocean blue borders and gardens. For a variety of options, consider adding Low perennials to complement the blue garden plants.

When and how to plant blue bloomers

Blue flowering perennials can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate affect planting. The distance between blue perennials depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Check the Heijnen product page for the number of plants per metre. Proper soil preparation is crucial for blue-hued garden perennials. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. When planting blue-toned perennial blooms, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain moisture, especially in the first few weeks. For gardens with blue colour accents, consider the variety of shades like indigo blue, cobalt blue, and lavender blue. Explore options like Perennials for wet soil for specific garden needs. Blue-flowering gardens can create stunning visual effects with ocean blue borders and gardens.

    Caring for Blue Perennial Flowers

Blue flowering perennials, also known as sky-blue perennials or azure perennials, add a stunning touch to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive and bloom beautifully.

    • Watering: Blue flowering perennials need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Water in the morning to allow the soil to dry during the day.
    • Pruning: Prune these perennials in late winter or early spring. Use clean, sharp tools to remove dead or damaged stems. Pruning encourages new growth and maintains shape.
    • Fertilising: Fertilise in early spring with a balanced fertiliser. This supports healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Follow the package instructions for the correct amount.
    • Dividing: Divide blue flowering perennials every 3-4 years in early spring. This prevents overcrowding and promotes healthy growth. Replant divisions immediately and water well.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, add a layer of mulch around the base to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Water thoroughly after moving to help establish roots in the new location.
For those looking to enhance their garden with these beautiful plants, consider Perennials for pots or containers to add blue colour accents to any space.
