Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Features of lavender, violet and deep purple tones

Purple flowering perennials are a stunning addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, from compact mounds to tall, graceful spikes. They can spread widely, creating a lush display of colour. As they develop, these perennials start as small shoots in early spring and gradually grow into mature plants by summer. The growth process is influenced by factors like soil quality and sunlight. The blooming period for purple flowering perennials varies, often occurring from late spring to early autumn. Climate and weather conditions play a significant role, with warmer temperatures and well-drained soil promoting longer flowering times. Proper care, such as regular watering and fertilisation, also enhances their bloom. The colours of these perennials range from light purple to deep violet, with some varieties displaying lavender or lilac tones. The specific hue depends on the plant species, soil pH, and sunlight exposure. These vibrant colours can create striking purple-flowering borders in gardens. While not all purple flowering perennials are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a pleasant fragrance. The intensity of the scent can vary, influenced by the plant's age and health. These fragrant blooms can attract pollinators, adding biodiversity to the garden. Mature purple flowering perennials can reach different heights, from low-growing ground covers to tall, eye-catching specimens. Their height can affect garden design, offering opportunities for layered planting and creating visual interest. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care ensures these perennials thrive, making them a valuable addition to gardens with purple colour accents.

Purple flowering perennials are a stunning addition to any garden. These deep purple perennial plants have a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be oval, lance-shaped, or heart-shaped, with shades ranging from dark green to silvery hues. The texture may be smooth or slightly hairy, which can affect how they retain moisture. In winter, some richly purple garden perennials may lose their leaves, depending on the species and climate conditions.

Winter hardiness is crucial for purple flowering perennials. Factors like temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure play a role. Some violet perennials are more frost-tolerant, thriving in colder climates, while others need protection. Soil conditions also impact their ability to withstand cold weather.

Many purple perennials are evergreen, keeping their leaves year-round, while others shed leaves annually. This depends on the plant type and local climate. Positioning in the garden can also influence whether they remain green or not.

Heat and drought resistance are important for long-flowering purple garden plants. Originating from dry regions, some have adaptations like waxy leaves or deep roots to conserve water. Soil moisture and wind exposure can affect their resilience during hot spells.

Regarding safety, purple flowering perennials are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal gardening practices ensure they pose no harm.

Purple perennials contribute to biodiversity by attracting pollinators like bees. Their long blooming period and insect-friendly nature support garden ecosystems. They provide food and shelter, enhancing the garden's resistance to pests and diseases.

Garden uses for purple flowers in calm or bold schemes

Purple flowering perennials are a wonderful addition to any garden, offering a range of hues from light lavender to deep violet. These plants can be used in various ways to enhance garden design and attract pollinators. Here are some ideas for incorporating purple flowering perennials into your garden:

    • Border Planting: Use purple flowering perennials to create stunning borders. Their vibrant colours can define garden edges and add depth.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups for a bold statement. Mixing different shades of purple can create a lush, cohesive look.
    • Solitary Planting: A single purple perennial can serve as a focal point, drawing attention with its striking blooms.
    • Hedges or Screens: Use taller varieties to form hedges or privacy screens, adding both beauty and function.
    • Containers: Plant in pots or containers for flexibility. This allows for easy movement and placement in various garden areas.
    • Bee-friendly Gardens: Choose purple perennials that attract bees, supporting biodiversity and pollination.

Whether aiming for a calm or bold garden scheme, purple flowering perennials offer versatility and charm. Consider adding these beautiful plants to create a garden filled with colour and life.

Plants that pair well with purple blooms

Purple flowering perennials can create stunning displays in any garden. These plants work beautifully with a variety of other plant types and species. Consider pairing them with silver-foliaged plants like Artemisia or Lamb's Ear. The contrast between the silver leaves and the deep purple perennial plants is striking. Grasses such as Festuca or Stipa can add texture and movement, complementing the richly purple garden perennials. For a more vibrant look, mix them with yellow flowering plants like Coreopsis or Rudbeckia. This combination highlights the purple bloomers and adds a cheerful touch to the garden.

These combinations are not only visually appealing but also beneficial for wildlife. Purple perennials for bee-friendly gardens attract pollinators, making them a great choice for those looking to support local ecosystems. Long-flowering purple garden plants ensure a continuous display of colour throughout the season. Gardens with purple colour accents can be enhanced with violet perennials, creating a cohesive and harmonious look. Whether in mauve-coloured borders and gardens or as part of a purple-flowering garden, these plants offer versatility and beauty.

Ideal sun and soil for purple perennials

Purple flowering perennials, also known as lavender-coloured perennials or violet-toned garden blooms, thrive best in full sun. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily to produce vibrant blooms. However, some varieties can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates. Wind can be a concern for these plants, as strong gusts may damage their delicate flowers. Planting them near a windbreak, like a fence or hedge, can help protect them. The ideal soil for purple flowering perennials is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are preferred, as they prevent waterlogging, which can harm the roots. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth and abundant flowering. Maintaining consistent soil moisture is crucial, as these plants do not like to dry out completely. However, overwatering should be avoided, as it can lead to root rot. Purple flowering perennials prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level, around 6.0 to 7.0. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting it can enhance plant health. Adding organic matter like compost can help maintain the desired pH and improve soil structure, ensuring these beautiful blooms thrive in any garden.

    Planting purple flowers – step-by-step

Purple flowering perennials can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate affect planting. When considering plant spacing, the type and size of the purple perennials matter. Fast-growing varieties need more space, while smaller ones can be closer. Check the Heijnen product page for specific plant spacing details. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. For planting, place the purple flowering perennials at the same depth as in the pot. Water thoroughly after planting to help roots establish. Regular watering is essential, especially in dry periods, to maintain vibrant purple blooms. These steps ensure a beautiful display of violet perennials in the garden.

    Caring for Purple Flowering Perennials

Purple flowering perennials, also known as lavender-coloured perennials or violet-toned garden blooms, are a beautiful addition to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive and bring vibrant colour year after year.

    • Watering: Purple flowering perennials need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Water in the morning to allow the soil to dry during the day.
    • Pruning: Prune these perennials in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools to remove dead or damaged stems. Pruning helps maintain shape and promotes more blooms.
    • Fertilising: Fertilise in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy growth. Apply once a month during the growing season for best results.
    • Dividing: Divide purple flowering perennials every 3-4 years to prevent overcrowding. Do this in early spring or autumn. Dividing helps rejuvenate the plant and encourages more blooms.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, add a layer of mulch around the base to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Water well after moving to help the plant settle in its new location.
For those looking to enhance their gardens with purple colour accents, consider adding these stunning plants. Buy purple flowering perennials to create a garden full of light purple, deep purple, and lavender-toned blooms.
