Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Traits of lemon, golden and sunflower-coloured blooms

Yellow flowering perennials are a wonderful addition to any garden. These sun-bright perennial plants grow in various forms, often spreading widely to fill spaces with their vibrant colours. They can range from compact clumps to sprawling ground covers, making them versatile for different garden designs. The development of yellow flowering perennials begins in early spring when new shoots emerge. As the season progresses, these plants grow steadily, reaching their full size by summer. The growth rate can depend on factors like soil quality and sunlight exposure. Yellow flowering perennials typically bloom from late spring to early autumn. The exact blooming months can vary based on climate and weather conditions. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil often encourage more abundant flowering. Proper care, such as regular watering and fertilising, also plays a crucial role. The blooms of these perennials come in a range of shades, from pale yellow to golden yellow. The specific colour can be influenced by the plant variety and soil conditions. Sunlight and climate also affect the intensity of the bloom colours. Some yellow flowering perennials are known for their pleasant fragrance, which can enhance the sensory experience of a garden. The scent may vary depending on the plant's age and health, as well as environmental factors. Mature yellow flowering perennials can reach different heights, from low-growing varieties to taller plants that add vertical interest. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care ensures they thrive and complement other garden elements.

Yellow flowering perennials are a vibrant addition to any garden. Their leaves can vary in shape, from oval to lance-shaped, and often have a smooth or slightly serrated edge. The colour of the leaves is typically a rich green, providing a striking contrast to the bright yellow blooms. Some varieties may have a waxy coating, which helps reduce water loss. In winter, many yellow flowering perennials lose their leaves, but some remain evergreen, depending on the species and climate conditions.

These perennials are generally hardy, but their frost sensitivity can vary. Factors like temperature, duration of frost, and wind exposure play a role. A sheltered spot with well-drained soil can enhance their winter resilience. While some yellow flowering perennials are evergreen, others shed their leaves annually. This depends on the species and the local climate, with milder areas supporting more evergreen varieties.

Heat and drought tolerance are important for yellow flowering perennials. Their origin often influences their ability to withstand dry conditions. A deep root system and leaf structure, such as a waxy surface, can help them conserve moisture. These plants are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no risk, ensuring a safe environment for all.

Yellow flowering perennials contribute to biodiversity by attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. Their long blooming period provides a consistent food source, supporting local ecosystems. By mimicking natural habitats, these plants help maintain garden health and resilience against pests. They offer food, shelter, and nesting opportunities, enhancing the garden's ecological balance.

Colour combinations that work with yellow

Yellow flowering perennials can create stunning displays in the garden. These bright yellow perennials pair well with various plant types. Consider combining them with purple or blue flowers like salvia or catmint. The contrast between the yellow and these cooler tones can make the garden pop. Lemon-yellow garden perennials also look great with grasses such as blue fescue or feather reed grass, adding texture and movement. For a more vibrant garden, mix yellow perennials with red or orange flowers like daylilies or crocosmia. This combination of sunshine yellow blooms and warm colours creates a lively and energetic feel. Long-blooming yellow flowering plants can also be paired with white flowers like daisies or white coneflowers for a fresh and clean look. These combinations work well because they balance colour and texture, enhancing the overall appeal of yellow-flowering gardens. Yellow perennials for vibrant gardens can be used in yellow-toned borders and gardens, providing a cheerful and inviting atmosphere. Whether in sunny garden plants or yellow-flowering borders, these plants bring a touch of brightness and joy to any outdoor space.

Location and soil for yellow-flowering success

Yellow flowering perennials thrive best in sunny locations. These bright yellow perennials need at least six hours of sunlight daily to bloom well. Factors like nearby trees or buildings can affect sunlight, so choose a spot with minimal shade. Wind can be a concern for these sun-bright perennial plants. To protect them, consider planting near a fence or using windbreaks like shrubs. The ideal soil for yellow flowering perennials is well-draining and rich in nutrients. Adding compost can improve soil quality, and regular fertilisation supports growth. Soil moisture is crucial; these sunny garden plants prefer slightly moist conditions. Wind and sun can dry the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. Yellow flowering perennials prefer a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Testing soil pH ensures it meets their needs, and adjustments can be made with lime or sulphur. With the right conditions, these golden-yellow perennials will brighten any garden with their vibrant blooms.

Planting tips for vibrant yellow perennials

Yellow flowering perennials bring a burst of colour to any garden. These plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, it's best to plant in spring or autumn. The planting distance for yellow flowering perennials depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Always check the plant properties on the Heijnen product page for the number of plants per metre or square metre. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil moist, especially in the first few weeks. This care ensures that lemon-yellow garden perennials thrive, adding sunshine yellow blooms to your garden. Whether in yellow-flowering gardens or yellow-toned borders, these bright yellow perennials will create stunning yellow-flowering borders and gardens with yellow colour accents.

    Care for Yellow Flowering Plants

Yellow flowering perennials bring vibrant colour to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive year after year. These sun-bright perennial plants need well-drained soil and a sunny spot. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly. Pruning is vital for healthy growth. Trim back in late winter or early spring to encourage new blooms. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damage. Fertilising in early spring with a balanced fertiliser promotes strong growth. Apply once a month during the growing season for best results. Dividing these golden-yellow perennials every few years prevents overcrowding. Do this in early spring or autumn. Replant immediately and water well. Winter protection is crucial in colder areas. Mulch around the base to insulate roots. Transplanting is best done in spring. Water the plant well before and after moving. Ensure the new location has similar conditions to the original.

    • Water regularly, especially in dry periods.
    • Prune in late winter or early spring.
    • Fertilise monthly during the growing season.
    • Divide every few years to prevent overcrowding.
