Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Explore the world of ground cover perennial plants and see how they can beautify your garden effortlessly.

What are ground cover perennials and their main uses?

Ground cover perennials are plants that grow low to the ground and spread to cover the soil. These plants are often used in gardens to create a lush, green carpet. Some popular types include Waldsteinia, Vinca, Geranium, Ajuga, and Epimedium. These perennials are known for their ability to suppress weeds and provide soil coverage. Ground-covering perennials are also called spreading perennial ground covers or carpeting garden plants. They are ideal for areas where you want to reduce maintenance, as they require less mowing and weeding. These plants are perfect for shady spots, with some being the best ground cover perennials for shade, while others thrive in sunny areas as hardy ground covers for sun. Using perennials with ground-covering growth can enhance the beauty of a garden. They are excellent for filling in gaps between larger plants and can help prevent soil erosion. Creeping perennials and spreading plants are great choices for gardeners looking to add texture and colour to their outdoor space.

Traits of creeping and spreading perennials

Ground-covering perennials, also known as low-growing perennial plants or creeping garden perennials, are perfect for filling spaces in the garden. These plants spread across the ground, creating a lush carpet. They can vary in width, depending on the type, but many can cover large areas effectively. The development of ground-covering perennials starts in early spring. They begin to sprout and gradually spread outwards. By summer, they often reach their full size, providing excellent coverage. These plants are known for their resilience and can thrive in various conditions, making them ideal for different garden settings. Ground-covering perennials bloom at different times, depending on the species. Some bloom in early spring, while others may flower in summer or autumn. Factors like climate, weather, temperature, and soil preparation can influence their blooming period. Proper care and maintenance also play a crucial role in their flowering success. The bloom colours of these perennials can range widely, from whites and pinks to purples and blues. The specific colour depends on the species and cultivar. Soil quality, light exposure, and climate conditions can affect the vibrancy of the blooms. While not all ground-covering perennials are known for their scent, some do offer a pleasant fragrance. This can be influenced by the plant's leaves, stems, and flowers. The intensity of the scent can vary, adding an extra dimension to the garden. The mature height of ground-covering perennials is generally low, making them ideal for layering in garden design. They can be used to create visual interest without obstructing sightlines. Choosing the right location and providing proper care will ensure they thrive and complement other garden plants.

Ground-covering perennials are a popular choice for gardeners looking to fill spaces with lush greenery. These low-growing perennials have a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be round, oval, or even heart-shaped, and they come in shades of green, silver, or variegated patterns. The texture can range from smooth to fuzzy, depending on the species. Some ground-covering perennials lose their leaves in winter, while others remain evergreen, influenced by the plant type and climate conditions.

Winter hardiness is crucial for ground-covering perennials. These plants can withstand cold temperatures, but factors like frost duration, wind exposure, and soil conditions play a role. Hardy ground covers for sun are more resilient, while those in shaded areas may need extra protection. The choice of species and the garden's microclimate are important considerations.

Many ground-covering perennials are evergreen, providing year-round coverage. However, some may shed leaves annually, similar to most perennials. This depends on the plant type, climate, and location in the garden. Spreading perennial ground covers are often chosen for their ability to stay green throughout the year.

Heat and drought tolerance vary among ground-covering perennials. Origin, leaf structure, and root depth influence their ability to withstand dry conditions. Some have a waxy coating or fine hairs to reduce water loss, while others develop deep roots to access moisture. Soil moisture and wind exposure also affect their resilience.

Ground-covering perennials are generally safe for gardens with children and pets. While some plants may have toxic parts, they are harmless with normal garden use. It's important to research specific plants to ensure safety.

These perennials contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for wildlife. They mimic natural habitats, supporting insects and small animals. Their dense growth helps suppress weeds and maintain ecosystem balance, making them valuable for gardens aiming to enhance biodiversity.

Where and how to use ground cover in the garden

Ground-covering perennials are versatile plants that can enhance any garden. These low-growing perennial plants are perfect for filling spaces and adding texture. Here are some ways to use them effectively:

    • Border: Use ground-covering perennials to create a lush border along pathways or garden edges.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups for a carpet-like effect, ideal for large areas.
    • Underplanting: These perennials work well under taller plants, providing a green base layer.
    • Shade Gardens: Choose the best ground cover perennials for shade to brighten darker areas.
    • Weed Control: Use spreading perennials to suppress weeds naturally.
    • Soil Coverage: Perfect for covering bare soil, preventing erosion and retaining moisture.
    • Talud: Plant on slopes to stabilise the soil and prevent erosion.
    • Insect Zone: Create a biodiversity zone to attract beneficial insects.

Consider buying ground-covering perennials to add beauty and functionality to your garden. These hardy ground covers for sun and shade are excellent choices for any gardener looking to enhance their outdoor space.

Combining ground cover with taller plants

Ground-covering perennials are perfect for creating a lush garden. These low-growing perennials can be combined with taller plants to add depth and interest. Spreading perennial ground covers like creeping thyme or ajuga work well with taller grasses or shrubs. This combination creates a layered effect, making the garden look fuller and more vibrant.

For a beautiful mix, try pairing carpeting garden plants with ornamental grasses. The contrast between the soft ground cover and the tall, swaying grasses adds movement and texture. Another great combination is ground cover perennial plants with tall flowering perennials like echinacea or rudbeckia. The bright flowers stand out against the green carpet, creating a stunning visual display.

These combinations are not only visually appealing but also practical. Perennials with ground-covering growth help suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Hardy ground covers for sun, like sedum, can thrive alongside sun-loving taller plants. In shaded areas, the best ground cover perennials for shade, such as hostas, can complement shade-tolerant shrubs. By mixing ground cover perennials with taller plants, a garden can achieve both beauty and functionality.

Best soils and spots for spreaders

Ground-covering perennials thrive in various light conditions, but most prefer partial shade. Too much sun can dry them out, while too much shade can hinder growth. Wind can affect these low-growing perennial plants, so planting them in sheltered areas or using windbreaks can help. The ideal soil for ground cover perennial plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality and support healthy growth. Regular fertilisation is beneficial, ensuring nutrients are available for these spreading plants. Soil moisture is crucial for creeping garden perennials. They need consistent moisture, but the soil should not be waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. Ground-covering perennials prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Testing soil pH and adjusting with lime or sulphur can create the best environment for these perennials with ground-covering growth. These perennials are excellent for soil coverage and weed suppression, making them a valuable addition to any garden.

Planting ground cover perennials – best practices

Ground-covering perennials can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate affect planting success. The distance between ground cover perennial plants depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Information on the number of plants per metre is available on the Heijnen product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for ground-covering perennials. Loosen the soil and remove weeds to ensure healthy growth. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry periods. This helps the plants establish and spread effectively, providing excellent soil coverage and weed suppression.

    Caring for Ground Covering Perennials

Ground-covering perennials are excellent for creating a lush garden. These low-growing perennial plants require specific care to thrive.

    • Watering: Ground cover perennials need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Water deeply to encourage strong root growth.
    • Pruning: Pruning helps maintain the shape and encourages new growth. The best time to prune is in early spring. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damaging the plants.
    • Fertilising: Fertilise ground-covering perennials in early spring. Use a balanced fertiliser to promote healthy growth. Apply according to the package instructions to avoid over-fertilising.
    • Dividing: Some creeping garden perennials benefit from dividing every few years. This process helps rejuvenate the plants and encourages more vigorous growth. Divide in early spring or autumn.
    • Winter Protection: Protect perennials with ground-covering growth from harsh winter conditions by adding a layer of mulch. This helps insulate the roots and retain moisture.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Ensure the new location has similar conditions to the original spot. Water well after transplanting to help the plant settle.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider adding these versatile plants. They not only beautify but also help with weed suppression. Buy ground-covering perennials to transform your garden.
