Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

These plants are often used in rain gardens or swales, where they help manage excess water and prevent soil erosion. Perennials that like wet feet are perfect for low-lying border areas, providing lush greenery and stunning blooms. In addition to their beauty, perennials for moist soil are practical choices for gardens with challenging conditions. They are hardy and can withstand the dampness that other plants might not tolerate. Whether planting perennials for waterside planting or creating a vibrant display in a bog garden, these plants are a valuable addition to any garden that experiences frequent moisture.

Key traits of plants that love damp soil

Perennials for wet soil, also known as moisture-loving perennials or wet-soil perennials, are perfect for gardens with waterlogged conditions. These plants have unique growth habits, often spreading widely to cover the ground. They thrive in boggy areas, making them ideal for bog garden plants or perennials for marshy areas. The development of perennials for wet soil begins in early spring. They emerge as the soil warms, quickly establishing themselves. By summer, they reach their full size, providing lush greenery. These plants are well-suited for perennials for pond edge or wetland gardens, as they can handle excess moisture. Blooming times for these perennials vary, often starting in late spring and continuing through summer. Factors like climate, temperature, and soil conditions influence their flowering. Proper care and ground preparation enhance their blooms, making them suitable for perennials for rain gardens or swales. The bloom colours of perennials for wet soil range from vibrant yellows to deep purples. The specific hue depends on the species and cultivar, as well as soil and light conditions. These plants are excellent for perennials for low-lying border areas, adding colour to damp spots. Some perennials for wet soil are known for their fragrance, especially during bloom. The scent can attract pollinators, enhancing biodiversity. These water-loving perennials are perfect for perennials for waterside planting. Mature height varies, with some reaching up to 1.5 metres. This height makes them suitable for creating layers in the garden, offering visual interest. Choosing the right location and providing proper care ensures they thrive, making them ideal for perennials that like wet feet.

Perennials for wet soil are perfect for gardens with high moisture levels. These moisture-loving perennials have unique leaf shapes and colours. Leaves can be broad or narrow, often with a glossy texture that helps them thrive in damp conditions. The colour varies from deep green to lighter shades, depending on the species and sunlight exposure. In winter, some perennials for wet soil may lose their leaves, while others remain evergreen, influenced by the specific type and climate conditions.

Winter hardiness is crucial for perennials that thrive in wet gardens. These plants can withstand cold temperatures, but factors like wind exposure and soil conditions play a role. Choosing the right species ensures survival during frosty periods. Perennials for moist soil are often hardy, but protection from harsh winds and ensuring good drainage can enhance their resilience.

Many perennials for boggy ground are evergreen, maintaining foliage year-round. However, some may shed leaves annually, influenced by climate and location. The choice of species and garden placement affects whether they stay green or not.

Heat and drought resistance are important for perennials for marshy areas. Originating from wet environments, these plants often have deep root systems and waxy leaves to retain moisture. They can tolerate dry spells, but consistent soil moisture is ideal for their growth.

Regarding safety, perennials for waterside planting are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no risk, making them a safe choice for family gardens.

Perennials for pond edge or wetland gardens support biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for wildlife, enhancing garden ecosystems. These plants mimic natural habitats, promoting a balance that helps resist diseases and pests. They are ideal for creating a vibrant, wildlife-friendly garden environment.

    Companion plants for wet conditions

Perennials for wet soil can create a stunning garden when combined with other moisture-loving plants. These perennials thrive in wet gardens and are perfect for boggy ground or marshy areas. Consider pairing them with ferns, which love the same damp conditions. Ferns add a lush, green backdrop that complements the vibrant colours of perennials for moist soil. Another great combination is with hostas. Hostas thrive in wet soil and their large leaves provide a striking contrast to the delicate flowers of water-loving perennials. For a more diverse look, mix in astilbes. Astilbes are perennials that like wet feet and their feathery plumes add texture and height to the garden. These combinations not only look beautiful but also support a healthy ecosystem by attracting beneficial insects. Perennials for waterside planting, such as iris and marsh marigold, can also be added to create a seamless transition from garden to pond edge or wetland areas. These plants for waterlogged soils ensure a vibrant and thriving garden all year round.

Best soil and drainage for moisture-loving types

Perennials for wet soil thrive in areas with plenty of sunlight or partial shade. These plants, like moisture-loving perennials, need consistent light to grow well. However, too much direct sun can dry the soil, so a balance is key. Wind can affect perennials for wet soil by drying them out. To protect them, consider planting near windbreaks or using garden screens. Wet-soil perennials prefer rich, loamy soil that retains moisture but drains well. Adding organic matter can improve soil structure. Regular fertilisation helps these bog-tolerant perennial plants flourish. Soil moisture is crucial for perennials for boggy ground. Wind and sun can dry the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. The pH level for perennials for moist soil should be slightly acidic to neutral. Testing the soil can ensure the right conditions for growth. Perennials for marshy areas, like water-loving perennials, are ideal for gardens with high moisture levels. These perennials for waterside planting are perfect for pond edges or wetland gardens. They also suit rain gardens or swales, making them versatile choices for low-lying border areas.

Planting in water-rich soil – tips and timing

Perennials for wet soil thrive in areas with consistent moisture. These moisture-loving perennials can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. The planting distance for perennials for wet soil depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Always check the Heijnen product page for specific plant spacing details. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained yet retains moisture. Adding organic matter can improve soil structure. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant at the same depth it was in the pot. Water-loving garden perennials need regular watering after planting to establish roots. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells. This ensures healthy growth and vibrant blooms.

Care for Perennials for Wet Soil

Perennials for wet soil thrive in damp and boggy areas. These plants need specific care to flourish.

    • Watering: Ensure the soil remains consistently moist. Check the soil by touching it; if it feels dry, water the plants. Water in the morning to allow the soil to absorb moisture throughout the day.
    • Pruning: Prune perennials for wet soil in early spring to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damaging the plant.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. This helps the plants grow strong and healthy. Fertilise once a month during the growing season.
    • Dividing: Divide perennials every 3-4 years to maintain their health. Do this in early spring or autumn when the plant is dormant.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base of the plants to protect them from frost. This helps retain moisture and insulates the roots.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Water the plant well before and after moving it to reduce stress.
