Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

    Characteristics of blue-toned grassland plants

Blue flowering prairie plants, also known as sky-blue prairie plants or azure-hued grassland flowers, are a stunning addition to any garden. These cool-toned wildflowers grow in various forms, often spreading widely to create a beautiful blue prairie. They develop from small shoots in spring, reaching their full height by summer. The growth pattern can vary, with some plants forming dense clusters while others spread more loosely. The blooming period for blue flowering prairie plants typically occurs from late spring to early summer. Factors such as climate, weather conditions, and soil preparation play a crucial role in their flowering time. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil can enhance their growth and blooming. The flowers of these plants come in a range of blue shades, including indigo blue, cobalt blue, and lavender blue. The specific hue can depend on the plant species, soil type, and light exposure. Proper care and maintenance can also influence the vibrancy of the blooms. While not all blue flowering prairie plants are known for their scent, some may offer a subtle fragrance. This can be influenced by the plant's age, the condition of the leaves and stems, and the overall biodiversity of the garden. In terms of height, these plants can vary significantly. Some may reach up to 1.5 metres, depending on the species and growing conditions. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care can help them thrive, making them a perfect choice for blue flowering gardens or blue flowering borders.

Blue flowering prairie plants are known for their unique leaf shapes and colours. The leaves can vary from narrow and elongated to broad and rounded, often with a smooth or slightly hairy texture. These plants typically display shades of green, but some may have a bluish tint, enhancing their cool-toned wildflower appeal. In winter, many blue prairie blooms retain their leaves, adding year-round interest to gardens with blue colour accents.

The winter hardiness of blue flowering prairie plants depends on several factors. They are generally resilient to cold temperatures, but prolonged frost can affect their growth. Choosing the right species and ensuring they are planted in well-drained soil can improve their frost resistance. Wind protection is also crucial, as strong winds can damage the plants during cold spells.

Most blue flowering prairie plants are perennial, meaning they keep their leaves throughout the year. This evergreen nature makes them ideal for blue flowering gardens, providing consistent colour and texture. The climate and location play a significant role in their ability to remain green, with milder climates favouring their evergreen characteristics.

These plants are also known for their heat and drought tolerance. Originating from steppe regions, they have adapted to withstand dry conditions. Their leaf structure, often with a waxy coating or fine hairs, helps reduce water loss. A deep root system allows them to access moisture from deeper soil layers, making them suitable for gardens with blue colour accents in arid areas.

Blue flowering prairie plants are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. While some plants may have mild irritants, they are harmless with normal garden use. It's always wise to supervise young children and pets around any garden plants.

These plants contribute significantly to biodiversity. Their long-lasting blooms attract pollinators, supporting local ecosystems. By mimicking natural habitats, they enhance the garden's resistance to pests and diseases. Blue prairie flowers for wildlife gardens provide food and shelter for various species, promoting a balanced ecosystem.

Best pairings for blue prairie planting

Blue flowering prairie plants can create stunning displays in the garden. These blue-toned steppe plants pair well with a variety of other plant types. Consider combining them with grasses like Miscanthus or Panicum for a natural look. These grasses add movement and texture, enhancing the beauty of blue prairie blooms. For a more colourful display, mix blue prairie flowers with yellow or orange perennials such as Coreopsis or Echinacea. This contrast highlights the cool-toned wildflowers, making the blue shades pop. Another option is to plant them alongside white flowering plants like Gaura or white Yarrow. This combination creates a serene and calming effect, perfect for blue flowering gardens. These combinations work well because they balance colour and texture. The grasses provide a soft backdrop, while the bright perennials add vibrancy. White flowers offer a neutral contrast, allowing the blue prairie flowers to stand out. These pairings are ideal for creating blue flowering borders or a garden with blue colour accents. Whether using indigo blue, cobalt blue, or light blue, these plants bring a touch of elegance to any garden.

Soil and site for vibrant colour

Blue flowering prairie plants thrive best in full sun. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily to show their vibrant colours. Partial shade can be tolerated, but it may affect the intensity of the blue hues. Wind can be a concern for these plants. To protect them, consider planting near a fence or using windbreaks. The ideal soil for blue flowering prairie plants is well-drained and rich in nutrients. Sandy or loamy soil types are preferred. Regular fertilisation helps maintain healthy growth. Soil moisture is crucial; these plants prefer moderate moisture levels. Too much wind or sun can dry the soil quickly, so mulching can help retain moisture. The pH level of the soil should be slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.0 to 7.0. This range supports the growth of sky-blue prairie plants and azure-hued grassland flowers. Adjusting the pH with lime or sulphur can optimise conditions. Incorporating blue flowering gardens or blue flowering borders can add stunning indigo blue, cobalt blue, and lavender blue accents to any garden. These cool-toned wildflowers create a striking contrast in ocean blue borders and gardens.

When and how to plant blue prairie species

Blue flowering prairie plants can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For plants with root balls or bare roots, the best time is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The plant spacing for blue flowering prairie plants depends on the plant type, size at planting, and growth rate. Typically, the number of plants per metre or square metre is listed on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for blue flowering prairie plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Before planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and mix compost into the soil. After planting, water the plants thoroughly to help them establish. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, to maintain healthy growth. Blue-toned steppe plants and blue prairie blooms add stunning cool-toned wildflowers to any garden with blue colour accents, creating beautiful blue flowering gardens and borders.

    Care for Prairie Blue Plants

Blue flowering prairie plants add a stunning touch to any garden. These sky-blue prairie plants thrive with proper care. Regular maintenance ensures vibrant blooms.

    • Watering: Blue flowering prairie plants need consistent moisture. Water in the morning to prevent evaporation. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer. If dry, water thoroughly.
    • Pruning: Prune in early spring to encourage new growth. Use sharp tools to avoid damage. Pruning helps maintain shape and promotes healthy blooms.
    • Fertilising: Fertilise in early spring with a balanced fertiliser. This supports growth and vibrant flowers. Apply every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
    • Dividing: Divide plants every 3-4 years to prevent overcrowding. Best done in early spring or autumn. This encourages healthy growth and more blooms.
    • Winter Protection: Provide mulch in winter to protect roots from frost. This helps maintain plant health through cold months.
    • Transplanting: Transplant in early spring or autumn. Water well after moving to reduce stress. Ensure the new location has similar conditions.
