Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Show more
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

    Characteristics of rose-hued meadow plants

Pink flowering prairie plants are a delightful addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading widely to create a soft pink carpet. They can range from compact clusters to more sprawling forms, depending on the species and growing conditions. The development of pink flowering prairie plants begins in early spring. They start as small shoots and gradually grow into lush plants by summer. The growth rate can vary based on soil quality, sunlight, and watering practices. These plants typically bloom from late spring to early summer. The exact blooming period can be influenced by climate, temperature, and care. Warmer climates may see earlier blooms, while cooler areas might experience later flowering. The blooms of pink flowering prairie plants come in a range of pink shades, from light pink to deep pink and even salmon pink. The colour intensity can be affected by the type of plant, soil conditions, and sunlight exposure. While not all pink flowering prairie plants are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a subtle fragrance. This can add an extra layer of enjoyment to a garden, attracting pollinators and enhancing biodiversity. At maturity, these plants can reach varying heights, often between 30 to 90 cm. The height can depend on the specific variety and growing conditions. They are perfect for creating layers in a garden, adding depth and interest to pink flowering borders. Consider adding these plants to a garden with pink colour accents for a romantic touch.

Pink flowering prairie plants are known for their diverse leaf shapes, colours, and textures. The leaves can vary from narrow and elongated to broad and rounded, often with a soft green hue. Some may have a slight sheen or a velvety texture, which helps in retaining moisture. These plants typically lose their leaves in winter, depending on the species and climate conditions. The winter hardiness of pink flowering prairie plants depends on several factors. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost can be challenging. The choice of species, wind exposure, and soil conditions play a crucial role in their survival during winter. Most pink flowering prairie plants are not evergreen and shed their leaves annually. This is influenced by the species, climate, and location in the garden. In milder climates, some may retain their foliage longer. These plants are generally heat and drought-tolerant, thanks to their origins in prairie environments. Their leaf structure, often with a waxy coating or fine hairs, helps reduce water loss. A deep root system allows them to access moisture from deeper soil layers, making them resilient in dry conditions. Pink flowering prairie plants are safe for gardens with children and pets. They are non-toxic and pose no danger when used in typical garden settings. These plants contribute significantly to biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for insects and birds, supporting a balanced ecosystem. Their long blooming period and native characteristics make them ideal for enhancing garden resilience against pests and diseases.

Best companions for romantic prairie designs

Pink flowering prairie plants can create a stunning display in any garden. These rose-hued grassland blooms pair beautifully with a variety of other plant types. Consider combining them with ornamental grasses like Miscanthus or Pennisetum, which add texture and movement. Soft pink prairie plants also look lovely alongside perennials such as Echinacea or Salvia, which provide contrasting colours and shapes. For a more unique combination, try pairing pink prairie flowers with silver-foliaged plants like Artemisia or Stachys, which enhance the soft pink tones. These combinations work well because they create a harmonious blend of colours and textures. The light pink and deep pink shades of the prairie flowers complement the green and silver hues of the companion plants. This mix not only adds visual interest but also attracts pollinators, making the garden lively and vibrant. Whether designing pink flowering borders or a garden with pink colour accents, these pastel prairie planting ideas offer endless possibilities for creating a romantic and inviting space.

Soil and sun preferences for pink tones

Pink flowering prairie plants thrive best in full sun. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily to bloom beautifully. If planted in partial shade, the flowers may not be as vibrant. Wind can affect these plants, so consider planting them near a fence or hedge for protection. The ideal soil for pink flowering prairie plants is well-drained and rich in nutrients. Sandy or loamy soil works well, and regular fertilisation helps them grow strong. Ensure the soil is not too compact, as this can hinder root development. Moisture levels are crucial for these plants. They prefer slightly moist soil but can tolerate short dry spells. Wind and sun can dry the soil quickly, so regular watering is essential, especially during hot weather. These plants prefer a neutral to slightly acidic pH level. A pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal. Soil pH can be influenced by the type of soil and the amount of organic matter present. Regular testing can help maintain the right balance. Incorporating pink flowering prairie plants into a garden with pink colour accents can create a stunning display. Whether in pink flowering borders or coral-coloured gardens, these soft pink prairie flowers add a touch of elegance.

Planting pink prairie flowers – tips and layout

Pink flowering prairie plants can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. When considering plant spacing, the type and size of the plant at planting time are important. Growth speed and the number of plants per metre also matter. Information on the number of plants per metre is usually found on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for pink flowering prairie plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Planting instructions include digging a hole twice the size of the root ball, placing the plant at the same depth as in the pot, and filling with soil. Watering is essential after planting to help the roots establish. Regular watering, especially in dry periods, supports healthy growth. These rose-hued grassland blooms add a soft pink touch to gardens, creating beautiful pink flowering borders and gardens with pink colour accents.
