Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

    What defines sun prairie flowers?

Full sun prairie plants are a group of hardy plants that thrive in sunny conditions. These plants are well-suited for gardens that receive a lot of sunlight throughout the day. They are known for their ability to withstand heat and dry conditions, making them ideal for sunny gardens. Some popular genera include Echinacea, Salvia, Panicum, Liatris, and Rudbeckia. These plants are also referred to as heat-tolerant prairie flowers or prairie plants for sunny gardens. They are often used in sun-loving prairie planting schemes, where their vibrant blooms add colour and life to the garden. These plants are perfect for creating colourful sunny prairie borders and can be combined with grasses and flowers for sunny borders to create stunning visual effects. Full sun prairie plants are used in gardens to create drought-tolerant prairie combinations. They are excellent choices for perennials in sunny prairie gardens, as they can handle the strong prairie sun. These plants are not only beautiful but also practical, as they require less water and maintenance. By choosing the best prairie plants for sunny gardens, gardeners can enjoy a vibrant and sustainable landscape.

Traits of bright-light and heat-tolerant wildflowers

Full sun prairie plants, also known as sun-loving grassland plants or bright-light prairie plants, thrive in sunny gardens. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading wide to capture sunlight. They develop from small shoots to mature plants, adapting to the sun's intensity. The best prairie plants for sunny gardens are drought-tolerant, making them ideal for areas with little water. The blooming period of sun prairie flowers depends on climate and care. Typically, they bloom in late spring to early summer. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil enhance their growth. Regular care and proper ground preparation are essential for vibrant blooms. The colours of these sun-loving wildflowers vary, with many showcasing bright yellows, purples, and reds. Factors like soil type and light exposure influence their hues. Mediterranean prairie plants, for example, often display vivid colours due to their sunny origins. While not all full sun prairie plants are known for their scent, some do offer a subtle fragrance. This can add to the biodiversity of a garden, attracting pollinators. The intensity of the scent can depend on the plant's age and health. Mature full sun prairie plants can reach impressive heights, often forming strong prairie sun plants that add structure to a garden. Their height and spread make them suitable for colourful sunny prairie borders and sun-drenched prairie combinations. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care ensures they thrive in any sunny setting.

Full sun prairie plants are perfect for gardens that receive plenty of sunlight. These sun-loving wildflowers have unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be narrow or broad, often with a waxy coating or fine hairs to reduce water loss. The vibrant green leaves may turn golden in autumn, adding seasonal interest. Most full sun prairie plants are perennials, meaning they return each year, though some may lose their leaves in winter depending on the species and climate.

Winter hardiness is a key factor for prairie plants for full sun. They can withstand cold temperatures, but prolonged frost and strong winds can affect their survival. Well-drained soil helps protect roots from freezing. In contrast, these plants are also heat-tolerant prairie flowers, thriving in hot, dry conditions. Their deep root systems and leaf adaptations help them conserve moisture, making them drought-tolerant prairie flowers.

Prairie plants for sunny gardens are generally safe for children and pets. While some may have mild toxicity, they are harmless with normal garden use. These plants also support biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and birds. Sun prairie flowers bloom for extended periods, attracting pollinators and enhancing the garden's ecosystem. By choosing the best prairie plants for sunny gardens, gardeners can create a vibrant, resilient landscape that thrives in sun-drenched prairie combinations.

Companion planting for sunny prairie borders

Full sun prairie plants can be beautifully combined with various plant types to create vibrant and resilient gardens. These sun-loving wildflowers thrive alongside grasses and flowers for sunny borders, offering a stunning display. Consider pairing full sun prairie plants with Mediterranean prairie plants like lavender and rosemary. These drought-tolerant prairie flowers complement each other well, creating a harmonious look. Another great combination is mixing prairie plants for full sun with ornamental grasses. The movement of grasses adds texture and interest, while the heat-tolerant prairie bloomers provide colour. For a more diverse garden, include perennials for sunny prairie gardens such as coneflowers and black-eyed Susans. These strong prairie sun plants are perfect for sun-drenched prairie combinations. These combinations are not only visually appealing but also practical. The best prairie plants for sunny gardens are often drought-tolerant, making them ideal for areas with limited water. Sun-loving prairie planting ensures a garden that can withstand the heat while offering a colourful sunny prairie border. By choosing the right mix of plants, a garden can be both beautiful and sustainable.

Soil, drainage and watering in full sun

Full sun prairie plants thrive in bright, sunny locations. These sun-loving grassland plants need at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Factors like nearby trees or buildings can affect light availability, so choose an open spot. Wind can be a concern for bright-light prairie plants. To protect them, consider planting windbreaks or using garden structures to shield them from strong gusts. The ideal soil for prairie plants for full sun is well-draining and rich in nutrients. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation supports growth, and a well-drained soil ensures roots stay healthy. Bodily moisture is crucial for sun-loving wildflowers. While these plants are drought-tolerant, they still need occasional watering, especially during dry spells. Wind and sun can dry out the soil quickly, so monitor moisture levels regularly. Prairie plants for full sun prefer a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting the pH can enhance plant health. By understanding these needs, a vibrant and resilient sun prairie garden can be created.

Planting tips for hot, bright conditions

Full sun prairie plants thrive in sunny gardens and are best planted in spring or autumn. Plants in pots can be planted year-round, except during frost. Consider soil type, drainage, and sunlight when planting. For sun-loving wildflowers, ensure the soil is well-prepared. Loosen the soil and add compost to improve drainage and nutrients. When planting full sun prairie plants, spacing is crucial. The plant type, size at planting, and growth rate affect spacing. Check the Heijnen product page for specific plant spacing details. Generally, allow enough room for each plant to grow without overcrowding. Proper ground preparation is key for prairie plants for full sun. Remove weeds and debris, and till the soil to a depth of 30 cm. Add organic matter to enrich the soil. For planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, to help establish strong prairie sun plants.

Ongoing Care for Sun Prairie Plants

Full sun prairie plants thrive in bright, sunny locations. These sun-loving grassland plants require specific care to flourish. Regular maintenance ensures healthy growth and vibrant blooms.

    • Watering: Provide water during dry spells, especially in summer. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth.
    • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead growth and encourage new shoots. Use sharp tools for clean cuts.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Use sparingly, as these plants are adapted to nutrient-poor soils.
    • Dividing: Divide perennials every 3-4 years in early spring to maintain vigour. This process helps manage plant size and encourages healthy growth.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base in late autumn to protect roots from frost. Remove mulch in early spring as temperatures rise.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring or autumn. Water thoroughly after moving to reduce transplant shock.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider adding more sun prairie flowers. These heat-tolerant prairie bloomers are perfect for creating colourful sunny prairie borders. Explore options to buy full sun prairie plants and enjoy a vibrant garden.
