Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

    What are semi-shade prairie plants?

Partial shade prairie plants are a wonderful addition to gardens that do not receive full sun. These plants thrive in areas with dappled light, making them perfect for spots under trees or near buildings. Known as dappled light meadow plants or partially shaded prairie plants, they bring a touch of the wild to semi-shaded gardens. These plants are used to create a prairie-style planting in partial shade, offering a natural look with their diverse textures and colours. They are ideal for wildflowers for semi-shaded gardens, providing a habitat for pollinators. Popular genera like Filipendula, Helenium, and Rudbeckia are often included in these plantings. Prairie plants for partial shade are not only beautiful but also practical. They are shade-tolerant prairie plants that can adapt to various light conditions, such as prairie bloomers in filtered light. This makes them suitable for prairie planting for partial sun or even prairie perennials for morning sun. Incorporating these plants into a garden can create a stunning prairie style under trees, adding interest and biodiversity.

Traits of prairie species for dappled or soft sun

Partial shade prairie plants, also known as semi-shade grassland plants or light-shade prairie plants, are perfect for gardens with dappled sunlight. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading to cover the ground with lush foliage. They adapt well to different garden settings, providing a natural look. The development of partial shade prairie plants begins in early spring. They start with small shoots that gradually grow into mature plants by summer. These plants thrive in areas with filtered light, making them ideal for gardens with trees or structures that provide partial shade. Blooming months for these plants vary, but they typically flower from late spring to early autumn. Factors like climate, temperature, and soil quality influence their blooming period. Proper care and maintenance, such as regular watering and soil enrichment, can enhance their flowering. The bloom colours of partial shade prairie plants range from soft pastels to vibrant hues. The specific colours depend on the plant species and soil conditions. Adequate sunlight and care can intensify these colours, making them a striking addition to any garden. While not all partial shade prairie plants are known for their fragrance, some species offer a subtle scent. This can add an extra layer of sensory appeal to the garden, attracting pollinators and enhancing biodiversity. Mature partial shade prairie plants can reach various heights, depending on the species. They can grow tall enough to create visual interest and layering in the garden. Choosing the right location and providing proper care ensures they reach their full potential.

Partial shade prairie plants are perfect for gardens with dappled light. These plants have unique leaves that vary in shape, colour, and texture. The leaves can be oval, lance-shaped, or even feathery, often displaying shades of green, sometimes with hints of purple or red. The texture can range from smooth to slightly hairy, helping them adapt to different light conditions. In winter, some prairie plants for partial shade may lose their leaves, while others remain evergreen, depending on the species and climate. The winter hardiness of these plants depends on several factors, including temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure. Many semi shade prairie plants are hardy and can withstand cold temperatures, but protection from harsh winds and well-drained soil can enhance their resilience. Partial shade prairie plants can be evergreen or deciduous. The choice of species, local climate, and garden location influence whether they keep their leaves year-round or shed them annually. These plants are also known for their heat and drought tolerance. Originating from prairies, they often have deep root systems and leaves with a waxy coating or fine hairs, which help conserve moisture. They thrive in well-drained soil and can withstand dry spells, making them ideal for prairie-style planting in partial shade. While most prairie plants for partial shade are non-toxic, it's always wise to ensure they are safe for children and pets. In general, they pose no danger when used in gardens. Partial shade prairie plants contribute significantly to biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for insects and birds, supporting a balanced ecosystem. Their long blooming periods and adaptability to semi-shaded gardens make them excellent choices for enhancing garden biodiversity.

Where to plant prairie flowers in light shade

    • Border: Use these plants to create a natural border along pathways or garden edges.
    • Group planting: Plant in clusters for a lush, meadow-like effect.
    • Under trees: Ideal for planting under trees where sunlight filters through the leaves.
    • Pot or planter: Grow in pots for patios or balconies with partial sun.
    • Shade-tolerant areas: Perfect for areas that receive morning sun and afternoon shade.
    • Insect corner: Attract pollinators by creating a biodiversity zone with these plants.

These semi-shade grassland plants add beauty and diversity to any garden. Consider prairie-style planting in partial shade to enjoy a variety of wildflowers for semi-shaded gardens. For those looking to buy partial shade prairie plants, these options offer a wonderful way to bring prairie style to shadier gardens.

    Companion ideas for part-shaded designs

Partial shade prairie plants can create a stunning garden when combined with other plant types. These plants thrive in dappled light, making them perfect for areas under trees or in semi-shaded gardens. Pairing them with ferns and hostas can add texture and depth. Ferns, with their delicate fronds, complement the robust nature of prairie plants, while hostas provide lush foliage that contrasts beautifully with prairie bloomers in filtered light.

Consider adding wildflowers for semi-shaded gardens like columbine or bleeding heart. These flowers bring vibrant colours and attract pollinators, enhancing the prairie-style planting in partial shade. Another great combination is using light shade prairie plants alongside shade-tolerant grasses. Grasses like sedges can add movement and a natural feel to the garden.

These combinations work well because they mimic natural ecosystems, creating a balanced and harmonious look. Prairie perennials for morning sun, such as coneflowers, can add height and interest, while the mix of textures and colours ensures year-round appeal. This approach to prairie planting for partial sun not only looks beautiful but also supports local wildlife, making it a sustainable choice for any garden.

Soil and exposure for shade success

Partial shade prairie plants thrive in areas with filtered light. These semi-shade grassland plants prefer spots where they receive morning sun but are shielded from harsh afternoon rays. Light-shade prairie plants can handle some wind, but providing a windbreak, like a fence or hedge, helps protect them. The ideal soil for prairie plants for partial shade is well-draining and rich in nutrients. Adding compost can improve soil quality, and regular fertilisation supports growth. Prairie bloomers in filtered light need consistent moisture, so ensure the soil retains some water without becoming waterlogged. These plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Testing the soil can help adjust pH if needed. Prairie planting for partial sun benefits from a balanced environment, where wind, sun, and soil work together to support healthy growth. Shade-tolerant prairie plants are perfect for creating a prairie style under trees, offering a lush and vibrant garden space.

How and when to plant in partial light

Partial shade prairie plants thrive when planted in the right conditions. These plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, light availability, and climate play a role in successful planting. When considering plant spacing, the type and size of the plant at planting time are crucial. Growth rate and the number of plants per metre are also important. Information on the number of plants per metre is usually available on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is key for partial shade prairie plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. This helps the plants establish strong roots. For planting instructions, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole and fill it with soil. Water thoroughly after planting. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks, to help the plants settle in. With the right care, these prairie bloomers in filtered light will flourish in any garden.

Maintenance of Partial Shade Prairie Plants

Partial shade prairie plants thrive in areas with filtered light. Proper care ensures healthy growth. These plants need well-drained soil and occasional watering, especially during dry spells. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning is essential for partial shade prairie plants. Trim dead or damaged stems in early spring to encourage new growth. Use sharp, clean tools to prevent damage. Pruning also helps maintain shape and promotes blooming. Fertilising is beneficial for these plants. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. This supports growth and flowering. Avoid over-fertilising, as it can harm the plants. Watering is crucial. Check soil moisture regularly. Water deeply when the top inch of soil is dry. Morning is the best time to water, reducing evaporation. Dividing partial shade prairie plants every few years rejuvenates them. Do this in early spring or autumn. It prevents overcrowding and encourages healthy growth. Winter protection is important. Apply a layer of mulch to insulate roots. This helps the plants survive cold temperatures. Transplanting should be done in early spring. Water well after moving to reduce stress. Ensure the new location has similar light conditions.

    • Ensure well-drained soil and occasional watering.
    • Prune in early spring to promote growth.
    • Fertilise in early spring with a balanced fertiliser.
    • Water deeply when soil is dry, preferably in the morning.
    • Divide every few years to prevent overcrowding.
    • Apply mulch for winter protection.
    • Transplant in early spring with adequate watering.

Their flowers often bloom in soft, muted colours, adding a gentle touch to any garden. The leaves of these plants can vary in texture and colour, providing visual interest throughout the year. Many partial shade prairie plants are also attractive to bees and butterflies, making them a great choice for supporting local wildlife. They can serve as both a food source and a shelter for various insects. The growth form of these plants is often graceful, with a natural movement that adds a dynamic element to the garden, especially when the wind blows. In autumn, some of these plants display beautiful colour changes, enhancing the garden's visual appeal. During winter, the structure of these plants can catch frost, creating a picturesque scene.
