Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Definition and Uses of Rock Garden Plants

Rock garden plants, also known as stone garden plants or rocky soil plants, are perfect for creating beautiful landscapes in gardens with rocky or stony soil. These plants are often compact and drought-tolerant, making them ideal for dry conditions. Popular genera include Sedum, Sempervivum, Arabis, Saxifraga, and Aubrieta. Rock garden plants are used to add texture and colour to gardens, especially in areas with poor soil. They are excellent for creating alpine gardens and can thrive in gravel gardens. These plants are also known for their ability to form carpets, making them suitable for covering rocky outcrops. For those looking to enhance their garden, consider flowering rock garden plants for added beauty. They are easy-care plants for dry rocky soil and are among the best plants for rock gardens. With their sun-loving nature, these perennials for stony soil are robust and perfect for any garden setting.

Key traits of rock garden plants for tough conditions

Rock garden plants, also known as rockery plants or alpine plants, are perfect for gardens with rocky soil. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading low and wide. They are compact and can cover rocky surfaces beautifully. The growth of rock garden plants starts in early spring. They develop slowly, adapting to the rocky environment. By summer, they reach their full size, showing their resilience in tough conditions. Rock garden plants bloom mainly in spring and early summer. The blooming period depends on the climate and weather conditions. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil help them thrive. Proper care and soil preparation are essential for a successful bloom. The flowers of rock garden plants come in various colours, including pink, white, and yellow. The colour can vary based on the plant type and soil conditions. Sunlight and climate also play a role in the vibrancy of the blooms. Some rock garden plants are known for their subtle fragrance. The scent can come from the flowers or leaves, adding a pleasant aroma to the garden. The intensity of the fragrance depends on the plant variety and growing conditions. Mature rock garden plants can reach different heights, usually staying low to the ground. This makes them ideal for creating layers in the garden. Choosing the right location and providing proper care ensures they grow well. For those interested in adding variety, consider semi-shade rock plants to complement sun-loving varieties.

Rock garden plants are perfect for creating a stunning landscape in rocky areas. These plants often have unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be small and needle-like or broad and fleshy, often with a waxy coating to reduce water loss. Colours range from deep green to silvery grey, adding visual interest. Many rock garden plants are evergreen, retaining their leaves throughout winter, while others may shed leaves depending on the species and climate.

Winter hardiness is crucial for rock garden plants. They are generally hardy, tolerating cold temperatures and frost. However, factors like wind exposure and soil conditions can affect their resilience. Well-drained soil is essential to prevent root rot during wet winters.

These plants are often drought-tolerant, thriving in dry, rocky soil. Their origins in alpine regions mean they are adapted to harsh conditions. Deep root systems and waxy leaves help them conserve moisture, making them ideal for sunny, dry spots.

Rock garden plants are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no risk, and they can be handled safely during planting and maintenance.

These plants support biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals. Their long blooming periods and native characteristics help mimic natural habitats, promoting a balanced ecosystem. Rock garden plants, like shade rock plants, can enhance garden resilience against pests and diseases.

Best uses for rockery plants in small and sloped gardens

Rock garden plants, also known as rockery plants or alpine plants, are perfect for creating beautiful and low-maintenance gardens. These plants thrive in rocky and dry conditions, making them ideal for various garden applications. Here are some ways to use rock garden plants effectively:

  • Border: Use rock garden plants to create a natural border along pathways or garden edges. Their compact size and vibrant colours add charm to any garden.
  • Group planting: Plant in groups to form a stunning display of colours and textures. This method works well in both small and large gardens.
  • Solitary: Place a single rock plant as a focal point in the garden. This can highlight its unique features and add interest to the landscape.
  • Rocky outcrops: Perfect for planting on rocky outcrops, these plants can fill gaps and soften the appearance of stones.
  • Gravel gardens: Use drought-tolerant rock plants in gravel gardens for a low-maintenance and attractive solution.
  • Full sun areas: Choose Full sun rockery plants for areas that receive plenty of sunlight, ensuring they thrive and flourish.
Rock garden plants are not only beautiful but also practical, offering a range of uses in different garden settings. Whether creating a border or filling a rocky outcrop, these plants are a versatile choice for any garden enthusiast.

Combining rockery plants with grasses and succulents

Rock garden plants can create stunning displays when combined with other plant types. Grasses and succulents are excellent companions for rockery plants. Grasses like Festuca and Carex add texture and movement, while succulents such as Sedum and Sempervivum offer unique shapes and colours. These combinations work well because they all thrive in similar conditions, such as well-drained, rocky soil and full sun. For a beautiful rock garden, consider pairing alpine plants with drought-tolerant plants. For example, mix compact rock plants like Saxifraga with sun-loving rock plants such as Echeveria. This combination not only looks attractive but also requires minimal care, making it ideal for those seeking easy-care plants for dry rocky soil. The combination of rock garden plants with grasses and succulents is visually appealing and practical. These plants are robust and can withstand harsh conditions, making them perfect for gravel gardens and rocky outcrops. By choosing the best plants for rock gardens, a diverse and vibrant landscape can be created that is both low-maintenance and beautiful.

Ideal soil and placement for rocky plant success

Rock garden plants, also known as rockery plants or alpine plants, thrive in specific conditions. These plants prefer full sun, but some can tolerate partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth, so choose a sunny spot for the best results. Wind can be a concern for rock garden plants. To protect them, consider planting near rocks or using windbreaks. The ideal soil for rock garden plants is well-draining and gritty. Sandy or gravelly soil works well, as it prevents waterlogging. Regular fertilisation helps these plants grow, so ensure the soil is nutrient-rich. Moisture levels are crucial; too much water can harm rock plants. Ensure the soil is not too wet, especially in windy or sunny areas, as these conditions can dry out the soil quickly. Rock garden plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. The pH affects nutrient availability, so test the soil and adjust if necessary. By providing the right conditions, rock garden plants, including drought-tolerant varieties, will flourish in any garden setting.

When and how to plant rockery plants

Rock garden plants can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and drainage are crucial. Plant spacing depends on the type of rockery plants, their size at planting, and growth rate. Information on the number of plants per metre is usually found on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is key for rock garden plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and mix in some gravel or sand to improve drainage. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting. Rockery plants, like alpine plants and drought-tolerant plants, need regular watering until established. Once settled, they require less water, making them perfect for sunny, rocky areas. These plants thrive in stony soil and are ideal for creating a beautiful rock garden.

Low-maintenance care for rock plants

Rock garden plants, also known as rock plants or alpine plants, thrive in well-drained soil and sunny spots. These plants are perfect for creating a stunning rock garden. Here are some tips for their care and maintenance:

  • Watering: Rock garden plants need minimal water. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if dry, water sparingly in the morning.
  • Pruning: Prune rock plants in early spring to remove dead or damaged parts. Use clean, sharp tools for best results.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring. Use sparingly, as too much can harm these hardy plants.
  • Dividing: Divide alpine perennials every few years in autumn to promote healthy growth and prevent overcrowding.
  • Winter protection: Cover with mulch or fleece in harsh winters to protect from frost.
  • Transplanting: Move rock garden plants in early spring. Water well after transplanting to help them settle.
Rock garden plants are ideal for those looking to buy rock garden plants that are low-maintenance and drought-tolerant. They are perfect for rocky outcrops and gravel gardens, offering a variety of compact and sun-loving options.

Frequently Asked Questions Rock plants

What function can rock garden plants have in a garden?

Rock garden plants serve multiple functions in a garden. They can create a natural, rugged beauty that mimics alpine landscapes and provide excellent ground cover to reduce weed growth and soil erosion. These plants are also ideal for filling crevices in rock walls, cascading over stone ledges, and thriving in areas where other plants may struggle due to poor soil conditions. Their varied forms, textures, and colors also add visual interest to the garden year-round.

Which is the best period for transplanting rock garden plants?

Transplanting rock garden plants is most successful during the cooler months of early spring or late autumn. This timing avoids the stress of summer heat and allows the plants to establish root systems before the extremes of winter. It is essential to ensure the plants are sufficiently watered after transplanting to encourage new growth and reduce transplant shock, allowing them to thrive in their new location within the rock garden.

Which plants can be combined well with rock garden plants?

Combining rock garden plants with other drought-tolerant and hardy varieties creates a cohesive landscape. Suitable companions include alpine perennials, ornamental grasses, and hardy ground cover plants that share similar growing requirements. These plants, when paired together, form a complementary group that enhances the textural and color contrast in a rockery setting. Additionally, integrating bee-friendly and butterfly-friendly plants can increase the biodiversity of the garden.

In which soil type do most rock garden plants grow well?

Rock garden plants generally prefer well-draining soil as they are adapted to rocky, less fertile environments. A mixture of gravel, sand, and loamy or sandy soil often best replicates their natural habitat, preventing waterlogged conditions that could lead to root rot. The soil should also be slightly acidic to neutral. Amending garden soil with grit or coarse sand can improve drainage and create an ideal growing medium for these resilient plants.

What popular types of rock garden plants are there?

Popular rock garden plants from our selection include Pinus mugo, known for its compact growth habit, and Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Niger', with its striking black foliage. Sedum album 'Murale' and Helianthemum 'The Bride' are excellent for adding texture and color. For those desiring a floral display, Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen' offers vibrant hues, while Fragaria 'Lipstick' provides the additional delight of edible fruit, demonstrating the versatility of rock garden plants.

In what period can I best plant rock garden plants?

The optimal planting period for rock garden plants is typically in the spring or autumn. Spring planting allows plants to establish themselves during the growing season, while autumn planting takes advantage of cooler temperatures and natural rainfall, aiding root development before winter. Avoid planting during the summer's heat or winter's frost to ensure the best start for these typically hardy plants, which are often accustomed to the challenging conditions of alpine environments.
