Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

What defines semi-shaded and dappled-light alpine plants?

Partial shade rock garden plants are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants thrive in areas where sunlight is filtered through trees or structures. Known as part-shade stone garden plants or rockery plants for dappled light, they are ideal for creating beautiful rock gardens in semi-shaded spots. These plants are used to add texture and colour to gardens with less direct sunlight. They include species like Asarum, Saxifraga, and Heuchera, which are well-suited for light shade alpine gardens. These plants are often chosen for their ability to grow in partially shaded rock gardens, making them a great choice for gardeners looking to enhance their outdoor spaces. Rock plants for partial shade are versatile and can be used in various garden settings. They are especially useful in rock gardens under trees, where they can thrive in the filtered light. Popular choices include perennial rock plants for partial shade and small shade plants for rocky areas. These plants not only add beauty but also help in maintaining the ecological balance of the garden.

Traits of part-shade tolerant rockery species

Partial shade rock garden plants are perfect for gardens with dappled light. These plants thrive in areas where sunlight is filtered through trees or structures. They often have compact growth, making them ideal for small spaces. The spread of these plants can vary, but they generally remain low to the ground, creating a lush carpet effect. The development of partial shade rock garden plants begins in early spring. They start with small shoots that gradually grow into mature plants by late summer. The growth rate depends on factors like soil quality and moisture levels. These plants are hardy and can adapt to different conditions, making them a favourite for many gardeners. Blooming months for these plants typically range from late spring to early summer. The exact timing can be influenced by climate, temperature, and care. Warmer climates may see earlier blooms, while cooler areas might experience later flowering. Proper soil preparation and regular watering can enhance their blooming potential. The bloom colours of partial shade rock garden plants are diverse, ranging from soft pastels to vibrant hues. The specific colour depends on the plant species and cultivar. Soil type and light exposure also play a role in determining the intensity of the colours. These plants are not particularly known for their fragrance. However, some species may have a mild scent, especially when the leaves or flowers are crushed. The scent can add a subtle layer of interest to the garden. Mature height for these plants is generally low, often not exceeding 30 cm. This makes them suitable for layering in garden designs, especially under trees or alongside taller plants. Their compact size allows for creative combinations with other rock garden plants for partial shade.

Partial shade rock garden plants are perfect for areas with dappled light. These plants have unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be oval, lance-shaped, or even needle-like, often with a glossy or matte finish. Colours range from deep green to silvery grey, depending on the species. Some leaves have a waxy coating or fine hairs, helping them retain moisture. In winter, many of these plants keep their leaves, providing year-round interest in the garden. However, some may lose their leaves, influenced by the plant type and local climate conditions.

Winter hardiness is crucial for partial shade rock garden plants. They can withstand cold temperatures, but factors like wind exposure and soil conditions play a role. Well-drained soil helps prevent frost damage. These plants are generally hardy, but prolonged frost periods can be challenging. Choosing the right species for the local climate ensures better survival.

Many partial shade rock garden plants are evergreen, maintaining their foliage throughout the year. This depends on the plant species and the garden's microclimate. In milder climates, these plants are more likely to stay green, while in harsher conditions, some may shed leaves.

Heat and drought tolerance vary among partial shade rock garden plants. Originating from rocky, alpine regions, they often have adaptations like deep root systems and waxy leaves to conserve water. These features help them thrive in dry conditions, but regular watering during prolonged dry spells is beneficial.

Partial shade rock garden plants are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no risk, and they can be handled safely during gardening activities.

These plants support biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals. Their long blooming periods and native characteristics make them excellent for creating balanced ecosystems. By mimicking natural habitats, they enhance garden resilience against diseases and pests, contributing to a healthy garden environment.

Best placements for filtered-light rock gardens

Partial shade rock garden plants are perfect for creating a beautiful garden in areas with dappled light. These plants thrive in spots where they receive some sunlight but are also protected from harsh rays. Here are some ways to use partial shade rock garden plants effectively:

    • Border: Use these plants to create a lovely border around the garden, adding texture and colour.
    • Group planting: Plant in groups for a lush, natural look that enhances the garden's beauty.
    • Underplanting: Ideal for planting under trees where light is filtered, providing a soft, green carpet.
    • Pot or planter: Grow in pots or planters to add interest to patios or balconies with partial shade.
    • Talud: Perfect for sloped areas, these plants help prevent soil erosion while adding visual appeal.
    • Insect corner: Create a biodiversity zone by planting these to attract beneficial insects.

Choosing the right rock garden plants for partial shade ensures a thriving garden. Consider semi-shaded rock garden plants or light-shade alpine plants for the best results. These plants are also available to buy, making it easy to start a beautiful rock garden in partial shade.

    Companion planting in light-shade areas

Partial shade rock garden plants can be beautifully combined with various other plant types to create a stunning garden. These plants thrive in areas with dappled light, making them perfect companions for light shade alpine plants. Consider pairing them with ferns and hostas, which also enjoy similar conditions. The lush green of ferns contrasts nicely with the textured leaves of rockery plants for dappled light, creating a visually appealing display.

Another great combination is with small shade plants for rocky areas like heucheras. Their vibrant foliage adds a splash of colour to the garden, complementing the subtle hues of semi shade rock plants. For a more diverse look, mix in perennial rock plants for partial shade such as saxifrages. These plants offer delicate flowers that enhance the overall beauty of the garden.

These combinations work well because they all thrive in similar conditions, ensuring each plant gets the right amount of light and moisture. The variety of textures and colours creates an interesting and dynamic garden space. By choosing the best alpines for dappled light, the garden becomes a harmonious blend of nature's beauty, perfect for those looking to enhance their outdoor space with rock garden plants for partial shade.

Site and soil for partial light success

Partial shade rock garden plants thrive in areas with filtered light. These plants prefer spots where they receive morning sun and afternoon shade. Factors like nearby trees or structures can provide the necessary shade. Wind can affect these plants, so placing them near a wall or using windbreaks can help protect them. The ideal soil for partial shade rock garden plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality and support growth. Regular fertilisation is important to maintain nutrient levels. Soil moisture is crucial for these plants. They need consistent moisture but should not sit in waterlogged soil. Wind and sun exposure can dry out the soil, so mulching can help retain moisture. Partial shade rock garden plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Testing the soil pH and adjusting with lime or sulphur can create the best conditions. These plants, including semi-shaded rock garden plants and light-shade alpine plants, are perfect for shaded rock gardens and areas under trees. They are also suitable as small shade plants for rocky areas, making them versatile choices for any garden.

Planting tips for dappled rockery zones

Partial shade rock garden plants thrive in areas with filtered light. These plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type and climate play a role in successful planting. When considering plant spacing, the type and size of the plant at planting time are crucial. Growth rate and the number of plants per metre are also important. Information on the number of plants per metre is usually available on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is key for partial shade rock garden plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. This helps the plants establish strong roots. For planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole and fill it with soil. Water thoroughly after planting. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, to help the plants settle in. These rockery plants for dappled light are perfect for creating a beautiful garden under trees or in semi-shaded areas. They add texture and colour to any garden space.

Maintenance of Partial Shade Rock Garden Plants

Partial shade rock garden plants thrive in areas with filtered light. These plants need specific care to flourish.

    • Watering: Ensure the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Check the soil regularly to determine if watering is needed, especially during dry spells.
    • Pruning: Trim dead or overgrown parts in early spring to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools for best results.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring. This helps maintain healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising as it can harm the plants.
    • Dividing: Some plants benefit from dividing every few years. This is best done in early spring to promote healthy growth.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, add a layer of mulch to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Water well after moving to help the plant settle.
