Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Traits of azure and sky-blue flowering edge plants

Blue flowering border plants are a beautiful addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading wide to create a stunning display. They can range from compact mounds to taller, more upright forms, making them versatile for different garden designs. The development of blue flowering border plants begins in early spring. They start with small shoots that gradually grow into lush foliage. By late spring or early summer, these plants reach their full size, ready to bloom. The blooming months for blue flowering border plants typically fall between late spring and early summer. Factors like climate, weather conditions, and soil preparation play a crucial role in their flowering. Warmer temperatures and well-drained soil encourage more vibrant blooms. The bloom colours of these plants vary from indigo blue to light blue, with some varieties showing lavender blue or even ocean blue hues. The specific shade depends on the plant type, soil quality, and sunlight exposure. While not all blue flowering border plants are known for their scent, some do offer a subtle fragrance. This can enhance the sensory experience in a garden, attracting pollinators and adding to biodiversity. Mature blue flowering border plants can reach different heights, depending on the species. Some may grow to about 30 cm, while others can reach up to 90 cm. Choosing the right height is important for maintaining sightlines and layering in the garden. For those looking to enhance their garden with these plants, consider the option to buy blue flowering border plants to create a calming and visually appealing space.

Blue flowering border plants are a popular choice for adding a calming touch to gardens. These plants often have unique leaf shapes and colours. Leaves can be oval, lance-shaped, or even heart-shaped, with shades ranging from deep green to silvery hues. The texture might be smooth or slightly hairy, which can affect how they handle different weather conditions. In winter, some blue-toned garden edge plants may lose their leaves, while others remain evergreen, depending on the species and climate.

When it comes to winter hardiness, blue border flowers vary. Some can withstand frost, while others are more sensitive. Factors like temperature, frost duration, and wind exposure play a role. Planting in sheltered spots and ensuring good soil drainage can help improve their resilience.

Many blue-hued border flowers are evergreen, providing year-round interest. However, some may shed leaves annually, influenced by species and local climate. Choosing the right type for the garden's conditions is essential.

Heat and drought tolerance also differ among these plants. Origin, leaf structure, and root depth are crucial factors. Some have waxy or hairy leaves to reduce water loss, while others develop deep roots to access moisture. Ensuring adequate soil moisture and protection from strong winds can enhance their survival in hot conditions.

Regarding safety, blue flowering border plants are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. It's always wise to supervise interactions and avoid ingestion.

These plants contribute to biodiversity by attracting pollinators and providing habitats. They can mimic natural habitats, supporting ecosystems and enhancing garden resilience against pests. Blue-flowering gardens with indigo, cobalt, and lavender blue accents create a serene environment, perfect for those seeking a peaceful retreat.

How to use blue border flowers for depth and balance

Blue flowering border plants are a wonderful choice for adding depth and balance to any garden. These plants, also known as sky-blue garden border plants or azure-hued border plants, can transform a garden into a calming oasis. Here are some ways to incorporate blue border flowers effectively:

    • Use blue flowering border plants in borders to create a soothing and cool-toned effect.
    • Group these plants together for a striking visual impact in gardens with blue colour accents.
    • Plant them as a solitary feature to draw attention to specific areas of the garden.
    • Create a hedge or boundary with blue border plants for a unique and calming garden border.
    • Incorporate them into pots or planters for flexibility and easy rearrangement.
    • Use them as underplanting to complement taller plants and add layers to the garden.
    • Consider them for a windscreen or privacy screen, providing both function and beauty.
    • Enhance a shade garden with blue flowering border plants for a touch of colour in darker areas.
For those looking to buy blue flowering border plants, these options are perfect for creating blue-flowering gardens with indigo blue, cobalt blue, and other shades. Whether aiming for a calming garden border or a vibrant blue-flowering border, these plants offer versatility and charm.

Plant combinations that work with blue hues

Blue flowering border plants can create a calming effect in any garden. These plants pair well with a variety of other plant types and colours. For a striking contrast, consider combining blue-toned garden edge plants with yellow or orange flowers. This combination highlights the cool tones of the blue flowers, making them stand out even more. Another beautiful pairing is with white flowers. Blue-hued border flowers alongside white blooms create a serene and elegant look. This combination is perfect for gardens with blue colour accents, as it enhances the calming atmosphere. For a more natural look, mix blue border flowers with green foliage plants. This combination mimics the natural landscape and provides a soothing backdrop for the blue flowers. Cool-toned border plants like lavender blue and ocean blue varieties can be used to create depth and interest in the garden. These combinations not only enhance the beauty of blue-flowering gardens but also provide a diverse and visually appealing landscape. Whether using indigo blue or light blue plants, these pairings can transform any garden into a peaceful retreat.

Soil and site needs for blue border success

Blue flowering border plants thrive in full sun to partial shade. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily, but some can tolerate less. Wind can damage these plants, so planting them near a fence or hedge can offer protection. The ideal soil for blue flowering border plants is well-drained and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality and support growth. Regular fertilisation helps maintain vibrant blooms. These plants prefer moist soil, but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. The pH level should be slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.0 to 7.0. Testing the soil can ensure the right conditions for these azure-hued border plants. Blue border flowers add a cool-toned touch to gardens, with shades like indigo blue, cobalt blue, and lavender blue enhancing the landscape. Gardens with blue colour accents create a calming atmosphere, making them a popular choice for many gardeners.

Planting tips for strong blue bloomers

Blue flowering border plants add a serene touch to any garden. These plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. When considering plant spacing, the type and size of the blue flowering border plants matter. Fast-growing varieties need more space, while smaller ones can be closer. The number of plants per metre is usually listed on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. This helps the blue-toned garden edge plants thrive. For planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, and water thoroughly. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks, to help the blue-hued border flowers establish. With the right care, these plants will bring vibrant blue-flowering gardens to life.

Care for Blue Flowering Border Plants

Blue flowering border plants add a touch of elegance to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive and bloom beautifully.

    • Watering: These plants need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer. Water deeply when the soil feels dry.
    • Pruning: Prune in early spring to encourage new growth. Use sharp tools to remove dead or damaged stems. This helps maintain shape and promotes healthy blooms.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and mid-summer. Follow package instructions for the right amount. Fertilising supports vibrant blooms and strong growth.
    • Dividing: Divide plants every 3-4 years in early spring. This prevents overcrowding and encourages healthy growth. Replant divisions immediately and water well.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, add mulch around the base to protect roots from frost. This helps the plants survive harsh winters.
    • Transplanting: Best done in early spring or autumn. Water thoroughly after transplanting and keep the soil moist until established.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider adding more blue flowering border plants.
