Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Characteristics of deep red and bright red edge plants

Red flowering border plants are a stunning addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, often reaching a width of 30 to 60 cm. They spread gracefully, creating a vibrant red border that catches the eye. The development of these plants begins in early spring, with shoots emerging as the weather warms. By summer, they reach their full height, showcasing bold red flowers that add drama to the garden. The blooming period for red flowering border plants typically occurs from late spring to early autumn. Factors such as climate, temperature, and soil preparation play a crucial role in their flowering. In cooler climates, they may bloom later, while warmer regions see earlier blooms. Proper care and maintenance ensure a longer flowering season. The bloom colours range from deep red to fiery red, with variations like carmine red and cherry red. The specific shade depends on the plant variety, soil conditions, and sunlight exposure. These plants thrive in well-drained soil and full sun, enhancing their vibrant hues. Red flowering border plants are not particularly known for their fragrance. However, some varieties may have a subtle scent, adding a pleasant touch to the garden. The focus is primarily on their striking visual appeal. At maturity, these plants can reach heights of 60 to 90 cm. Their height and spread make them ideal for creating red-flowering borders and gardens with red colour accents. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care will ensure they thrive, adding a splash of colour to any garden setting.

Red flowering border plants are a stunning addition to any garden. These plants have a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be oval, lance-shaped, or even heart-shaped, with shades ranging from deep green to burgundy. The texture can be smooth or slightly hairy, which helps in retaining moisture. In winter, some red flowering border plants may lose their leaves, depending on the species and climate conditions. The winter hardiness of red flowering border plants varies. Some can withstand frost, while others are more sensitive. Factors like temperature, frost duration, wind exposure, and soil conditions play a role. Choosing the right species for the local climate is crucial for their survival during cold months. Many red flowering border plants are evergreen, keeping their leaves year-round, while others shed leaves annually. This depends on the species and the garden's climate and location. These plants are generally heat and drought-tolerant. Their origin, leaf structure, and root system contribute to this resilience. A waxy coating or fine hairs on leaves can reduce water loss, while deep roots help access moisture in dry conditions. Red flowering border plants are usually non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no danger, but it's always wise to supervise young children and pets around any plants. These plants support biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and birds. Their long blooming period and vibrant colours attract pollinators, enhancing the garden's ecosystem. Red flowering border plants can mimic natural habitats, promoting a balanced environment and increasing garden resistance to pests.

How to use red flowering borders for strong visual impact

Red flowering border plants can transform any garden into a vibrant and striking space. These plants, known for their bold red flowers, are perfect for creating dramatic borders. Here are some ways to use red flowering border plants effectively in the garden:

    • Border: Use red flowering border plants to create a striking edge along pathways or garden beds. Their vibrant red hues, such as carmine red and fiery red, add a bold statement.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups for a mass of colour. Scarlet garden border flowers can be used to fill large areas, creating a sea of red.
    • Solitary Planting: Use as a focal point in the garden. A single crimson-hued flowering border plant can draw attention and add depth.
    • Hedge or Screen: Create a privacy screen with red border plants. Their dense growth and deep red flowers provide both beauty and function.
    • Container Planting: Plant in pots or containers for flexibility. This allows for easy movement and placement in gardens with red colour accents.
For those looking to buy red flowering border plants, consider the variety of shades available, from cherry red to wine red, to suit any garden style. These plants not only enhance the garden's visual appeal but also create a lively and inviting atmosphere.

Best colour pairings with red blooms

Red flowering border plants can create a stunning effect in any garden. These bold red flowers pair beautifully with a variety of other plant types. Consider combining them with silver-leaved plants like Artemisia or Lamb's Ear. The contrast between the deep red edge plants and the soft, silvery foliage is striking. Another great combination is with ornamental grasses. The movement of the grasses complements the vibrant red border flowers, adding texture and interest. For a more dramatic look, mix red flowering plants for dramatic borders with purple or blue flowers such as Salvia or Catmint. This creates a vibrant contrast that enhances the red flower border. These combinations work well because they highlight the fiery red and cherry red tones, making the garden feel alive and dynamic. Gardens with red colour accents benefit from these pairings, as they bring out the best in the red-flowering borders. Whether using carmine red or wine red, these combinations ensure a beautiful and cohesive garden design.

Soil and light preferences for red success

Red flowering border plants thrive best in full sun, which helps them produce bold red flowers. However, they can also tolerate partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth and flowering. If planted in too much shade, the striking garden plants may not bloom as well. Wind can be a concern for red border plants. To protect them, consider planting them near a fence or hedge to reduce wind exposure. The ideal soil for red flowering border plants is well-draining and rich in nutrients. A mix of loam and sand is often suitable. Regular fertilisation supports their growth, ensuring the soil remains fertile. Soil moisture is crucial; these plants prefer consistently moist soil but not waterlogged conditions. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so mulching can help retain moisture. Red flowering border plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. The pH affects nutrient availability, so testing the soil can be beneficial. Adjusting the pH with lime or sulphur can help achieve the desired level. With the right conditions, these scarlet garden border flowers will add vibrant red colour accents to any garden.

Planting and care of red border varieties

Red flowering border plants add a vibrant touch to any garden. These striking garden plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, the best time is spring or autumn. When planting red border flowers, consider the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. The number of plants per metre is crucial and can be found on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is key for red-flowering gardens. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with compost. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. After planting, water thoroughly to help the roots establish. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks. With the right care, these bold red flowers will create beautiful red-flowering borders, adding deep red, carmine red, and other fiery shades to gardens with red colour accents.

    Maintaining Red Border Flowers

Red flowering border plants add vibrant colour to any garden. Proper care ensures these scarlet garden border flowers thrive. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly. Pruning is vital for maintaining shape and promoting new growth. Trim in early spring using sharp shears to remove dead or damaged stems. This encourages a healthy, deep red bloom. Fertilising red border plants boosts growth. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and mid-summer. Follow package instructions for the correct amount to avoid over-fertilising. Dividing crimson-hued flowering border plants every few years prevents overcrowding. Do this in early spring or autumn. Gently separate the roots and replant in well-drained soil. Winter protection is crucial for gardens with red colour accents. Mulch around the base to insulate roots from frost. Transplanting red flower border plants is best in early spring. Water well after moving to reduce transplant shock.

    • Water when soil is dry
    • Prune in early spring
    • Fertilise in spring and summer
    • Divide every few years
    • Protect with mulch in winter

The leaves of these plants often have a rich green colour, providing a beautiful contrast to the fiery red blooms.
