Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Fruit-bearing plants

What defines a semi shadow border plant?

Partial shade border plants are perfect for gardens that do not receive full sun. These plants thrive in areas with filtered light or where the sun is only present for part of the day. They are also known as partially shaded border fillers. These plants are ideal for creating beautiful borders in gardens with light shade. Partial shade border plants are used to add colour and texture to areas that might otherwise be difficult to plant. They are perfect for east-facing borders or under trees where the sun is gentle. Some popular genera include Brunnera, Heuchera, Hosta, Pulmonaria, and Tiarella. These plants are excellent choices for semi-shaded border plants and can include flowering plants for light shade. Using these plants, gardeners can create stunning displays with part-shade flowering plants. They are also known as light shade border plants and are great for filtered-light border choices. Whether looking for morning sun plants or partial-sun bloomers, these plants offer a variety of options for any garden.

Traits of semi-shaded and lightly filtered light plants

Partial shade border plants, also known as semi-shaded garden border plants or light-shade edge plants, are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants grow well in areas that receive filtered light or morning sun. They typically spread moderately, creating a lush and full appearance in the garden. The development of these plants begins in early spring when they start to sprout. As the season progresses, they grow steadily, reaching maturity by late summer. The growth rate can vary depending on the plant species and environmental conditions. Partial shade border plants usually bloom from late spring to early summer. The blooming period can be influenced by factors such as climate, temperature, and soil quality. Proper care and maintenance, like regular watering and fertilising, can enhance their flowering. The flowers of these plants come in various colours, including shades of pink, purple, and white. The specific colour can depend on the plant type and soil conditions. Adequate sunlight and care can also affect the vibrancy of the blooms. Some partial shade border plants are known for their pleasant fragrance, which can add an extra dimension to the garden. The intensity of the scent can vary based on the plant's age and health. When fully grown, these plants can reach different heights, typically ranging from 30 to 90 cm. The height can be influenced by the plant species and the care it receives. Choosing the right location and providing proper care can help achieve the desired height and appearance.

Partial shade border plants are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants have unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be oval, lance-shaped, or heart-shaped, often with shades of green, silver, or variegated patterns. The texture can be smooth or slightly hairy, helping them adapt to filtered light conditions. In winter, some may lose their leaves, while others remain evergreen, depending on the species and climate. Winter hardiness is crucial for these plants. They can withstand mild frost, but severe cold can be challenging. Factors like wind exposure, soil conditions, and the duration of frost play a role in their survival. Choosing the right species for your climate is essential. Many partial shade border plants are evergreen, providing year-round interest. However, some may shed leaves annually, influenced by species choice and environmental conditions. These plants are generally heat and drought-tolerant, thanks to their origin and leaf structure. A waxy coating or fine hairs on leaves can reduce water loss. Deep root systems help them access moisture, making them suitable for dry spells. Partial shade border plants are safe for gardens with children and pets. They are non-toxic and pose no risk when used normally. These plants support biodiversity by offering food and shelter to insects and small animals. They mimic natural habitats, promoting a balanced ecosystem. Their long blooming periods and insect-friendly features enhance garden resilience against pests.

Where to use partial shade borders for best results

Partial shade border plants are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants thrive in areas that receive filtered light or morning sun. Here are some ways to use them in the garden:

    • Border: Use partial shade border plants to create beautiful edges along pathways or garden beds.
    • Group Planting: Plant in clusters for a lush, full look in semi-shaded areas.
    • Under-Tree Planting: Ideal for planting under trees where sunlight is limited.
    • Pot or Planter: Grow in pots for flexibility in placing them in light-shade areas.
    • Privacy Screen: Use as a natural screen to break sightlines in the garden.
    • Insect Zone: Attract beneficial insects by planting in a biodiversity corner.

These light shade border plants are excellent choices for creating stunning borders in partial shade. Consider using flowering plants for light shade to add colour and interest. For those looking to buy partial shade border plants, explore options that suit the garden's specific light conditions.

    Good companions for dappled-light planting

Partial shade border plants can create a stunning garden when combined with other plant types. These plants thrive in areas with filtered light, making them perfect for semi-shaded border plants. Consider pairing them with ferns, which add texture and thrive in similar conditions. Hostas are another excellent choice, offering lush foliage that complements the delicate blooms of partial-sun bloomers. For a splash of colour, try combining them with astilbes, which are flowering plants for light shade and add vibrant hues to the garden.

These combinations work well because they all prefer similar light conditions, such as those found in east-facing border plants or under-tree border bloomers. The mix of textures and colours creates a visually appealing garden that changes with the seasons. Light shade border plants like these can also attract pollinators, adding life to the garden. By choosing the best plants for partially shaded borders, a garden can be both beautiful and functional, providing a habitat for wildlife while offering a peaceful retreat.

Site and soil for part-shade success

Partial shade border plants thrive in areas with filtered light. These plants prefer morning sun and can handle some afternoon shade. It's important to consider the surrounding environment, such as nearby trees or buildings, which can affect light levels. Semi-shaded garden border plants are generally not wind-sensitive, but providing a windbreak can help protect them. The ideal soil for light-shade edge plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality and support healthy growth. Regular fertilisation is beneficial for these plants. Soil moisture is crucial; ensure the ground is neither too dry nor waterlogged. Wind and sun exposure can impact moisture levels, so monitoring is key. Partial shade border plants prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Testing the soil can help determine if adjustments are needed. Maintaining the right pH supports nutrient uptake and plant health. With the right conditions, these plants can flourish, adding beauty to any garden.

    Planting and spacing tips

Partial shade border plants thrive in areas with filtered light. These plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. When planting, consider the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. The number of plants per metre or square metre is usually listed on the product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for partial shade border plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and mix compost into the soil. When planting, place the plant at the same depth as it was in the pot. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially during dry spells. This helps the plants establish well. For spacing, consider the mature size of the plant. Light shade plants for borders may need more space if they grow large. Semi shadow border plants like east-facing border plants or morning sun plants require careful spacing to ensure they receive enough light. Always refer to the specific plant's requirements for the best results.

Care for Thriving Partial Shade Border Plants

Partial shade border plants thrive in areas with filtered light. These plants need specific care to flourish. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, water thoroughly. Pruning is vital for maintaining shape and encouraging growth. Trim in early spring using sharp shears. This helps remove dead parts and promotes healthy blooms. Fertilising is crucial for these plants. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and mid-summer. This provides nutrients for vibrant growth. For those considering transplanting, do so in early autumn. Ensure the new location has similar light conditions. Water well after moving to help roots settle.

    • Water when the soil feels dry to the touch.
    • Prune in early spring for healthy growth.
    • Fertilise in spring and mid-summer for best results.
    • Transplant in early autumn for optimal adjustment.
Partial shade border plants can be divided every few years to rejuvenate growth. Do this in spring or autumn. Protect these plants in winter with mulch to shield roots from frost. For more information on how to buy partial shade border plants, explore various options available.

Some border plants for partial shade provide shelter and food for garden wildlife, making them valuable for biodiversity. The growth form of these plants can vary, with some offering a lush, full appearance that enhances the garden's visual appeal.
