Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness
Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

What defines foliage plants for shade?

Shade foliage plants are those that thrive in areas with limited sunlight. These plants are perfect for gardens with lots of trees or buildings that block the sun. They are known for their beautiful leaves rather than flowers. Some popular types include Hosta, Asarum, and Luzula. These plants are often called shaded area foliage plants or dark area leaf plants. They are ideal for creating a lush, green look in parts of the garden that do not get much sun.

Shade foliage plants are used in gardens to add texture and colour where other plants might not grow well. They are great for filling in spaces under trees or along shaded borders. These plants can also be used as structural builders in shady borders, providing a leaf-shaped ambience. Evergreen plants for dark spots, like Helleborus and Epimedium, offer year-round interest. They are perfect for creating green coverage in the shade and can be used as perennials with decorative foliage without sun. These plants are also winter-hardy, making them a reliable choice for any garden.

Key traits of plants that grow in shaded areas

Shade foliage plants, also known as shade-tolerant foliage plants or low-light leafy plants, are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants have unique growth patterns, often spreading wide to capture available light. They develop slowly, starting with small leaves that gradually expand as they mature. The best foliage plants for shady areas can take several years to reach their full size, depending on the species and care provided. The blooming period for shade foliage plants varies. Some may not bloom at all, focusing instead on their lush leaves. When they do flower, it often happens in spring or early summer. Factors like climate, temperature, and soil quality play a significant role in their blooming success. Proper care and maintenance are essential for optimal growth. The colours of shade foliage plants are usually rich greens, but some varieties offer variegated leaves with hints of white or yellow. The soil type, light exposure, and plant age can influence these colours. While not known for strong scents, some shade foliage plants may have a mild fragrance, especially when leaves are crushed. Mature shade foliage plants can vary in height, typically ranging from 30 cm to over a metre. Their height depends on the species and growing conditions. These plants are excellent for creating layers in a garden, providing structure and green coverage in the shade. Consider them as structural builders in shady borders or leaf-shaped ambience creators for a lush garden atmosphere.

Shade foliage plants are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants have unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. The leaves can be broad or narrow, with shades ranging from deep green to variegated patterns. The texture might be smooth or slightly hairy, helping them adapt to low-light conditions. Some shade foliage plants are evergreen, keeping their leaves year-round, while others shed leaves in winter, depending on the species and climate. Winter hardiness is crucial for shade foliage plants. They can withstand cold temperatures, but factors like wind and soil conditions affect their frost sensitivity. Choosing the right species and ensuring proper soil drainage can enhance their resilience. These plants are often evergreen, providing year-round interest in shady spots. However, some may lose leaves annually, influenced by species choice and local climate. Shade foliage plants are generally heat and drought-tolerant. Their origins in shaded environments mean they have adapted to conserve moisture. Features like a waxy leaf coating or deep root systems help them survive dry spells. In terms of safety, shade foliage plants are non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They pose no risk when used in typical garden settings. These plants support biodiversity by offering shelter and food for insects and small animals. Their long-lasting foliage creates habitats, promoting a balanced ecosystem. Shade foliage plants are essential for maintaining garden health and attracting wildlife, making them a valuable addition to any garden.

Where to use leafy greens in low-light conditions

Shade foliage plants are perfect for adding life to areas with little sunlight. These shade-loving leafy plants can transform a garden into a lush haven. Here are some ways to use shade foliage plants effectively:

    • Border: Use shade-tolerant foliage plants to create a lush border along pathways or garden edges.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups to form a dense, green carpet that thrives in low-light conditions.
    • Underplanting: Ideal for planting under trees where sunlight is limited, providing a beautiful leaf accent.
    • Pot or Planter: Perfect for adding greenery to shaded patios or balconies.
    • Privacy Screen: Use as a natural screen to create privacy in shady areas.
    • Shady Garden: Build a beautiful shady garden with foliage plants that thrive without direct sunlight.
Foliage plants for shade not only enhance the garden's appearance but also provide structure and ambience. Consider evergreen plants for dark spots to maintain year-round interest. For those looking to buy shade foliage plants, these options offer a variety of textures and colours, making them ideal for any garden setting.

Pairing with shade flowers and ground cover

Shade foliage plants can create a stunning garden when combined with other plant types. These plants thrive in shaded areas and can be paired with shade-tolerant leafy plants like ferns and hostas. Ferns add a delicate texture, while hostas offer bold, broad leaves. For a pop of colour, consider adding astilbes, which produce feathery flowers that contrast beautifully with the lush green of shade foliage plants. Another great combination is with evergreen plants for dark spots, such as heucheras. These provide year-round interest with their colourful leaves. For ground cover, try pairing with vinca minor, which offers a carpet of green and small flowers. This combination not only enhances the visual appeal but also helps in creating a leaf-shaped ambience in the garden. These combinations work well because they provide a mix of textures and colours, creating a balanced and harmonious look. The structural builders in shady borders, like ferns and hostas, add height and depth, while the ground cover ensures green coverage in the shade. Together, they form a cohesive and attractive garden space, perfect for those looking to enhance their shady areas with foliage plants for shade.

Soil and moisture needs for foliage in shade

Shade foliage plants thrive in low-light conditions. They prefer partial to full shade, making them ideal for areas under trees or in shady gardens. These plants are not wind-sensitive, but providing a windbreak can help maintain soil moisture. The best soil for shade-tolerant foliage plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Regular fertilisation supports growth, especially in nutrient-poor soils. Moisture is crucial; the soil should be consistently damp but not waterlogged. Wind and sun can dry out the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. Shade foliage plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting pH can enhance plant health. These evergreen plants for dark spots add ornamental leaves in the shade, creating a leaf-shaped ambience. They serve as structural builders in shady borders and provide green coverage in the shade. Winter-hardy foliage plants in shade are perfect for perennials with decorative foliage without sun, offering leaf accents for under trees.

Planting tips for leafy shade-loving varieties

Shade foliage plants thrive in areas with limited sunlight. These plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, drainage, and light levels affect planting success. When planting shade foliage plants, consider the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. The number of plants per metre depends on these factors. Check the Heijnen product page for specific planting density information. Proper soil preparation is crucial. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. This helps the roots establish quickly. For planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Fill the hole with soil and water thoroughly. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks, to help the plant settle. Shade foliage plants, also known as shaded area foliage plants or dark area leaf plants, add beauty to any garden. They are perfect for creating green coverage in the shade and serve as structural builders in shady borders.

Care for Shade Foliage Plants in Limited Light

Shade foliage plants thrive in low-light areas, making them perfect for shady gardens. These plants require specific care to maintain their lush appearance. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Use a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Pruning helps maintain shape and encourages new growth. The best time to prune is late winter or early spring. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damage. For those looking to buy shade foliage plants, consider their placement in the garden. They prefer well-drained soil and benefit from occasional mulching to retain moisture. If transplanting, do so in early spring or autumn, ensuring the roots are well-watered. Protect these plants in winter by adding a layer of mulch. Dividing plants every few years can rejuvenate them and prevent overcrowding. Follow these tips for thriving shade-tolerant foliage plants.

    • Water regularly, especially in dry periods.
    • Fertilise in spring for healthy growth.
    • Prune in late winter or early spring.
    • Transplant in early spring or autumn.
    • Protect with mulch in winter.
    • Divide every few years to rejuvenate.
