Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Characteristics of lush, decorative leafy plants

Foliage plants, also known as leafy plants or plants with decorative leaves, are popular for their lush and vibrant appearance. These plants grow in various forms, from compact to sprawling, providing a range of options for garden design. They can spread widely, creating a dense cover that adds texture and depth to any garden. The development of foliage plants begins with the sprouting of new leaves, which gradually unfurl to reveal their full beauty. As they mature, these plants can reach their full size, offering a stunning display of decorative foliage. The growth rate and final size depend on factors like soil quality, light conditions, and care. Foliage plants typically thrive in the UK climate, with many varieties reaching their peak during the warmer months. The blooming period can vary, influenced by temperature, soil preparation, and plant age. Proper care and maintenance ensure that these plants remain healthy and vibrant throughout the season. The colours of foliage plants are diverse, ranging from deep greens to variegated patterns. Factors such as species, soil type, and light exposure can affect the intensity and variation of these colours. Regular care and the right environment help maintain their striking appearance. While foliage plants are not primarily known for their scent, some varieties may offer subtle fragrances. The intensity of the aroma can depend on the plant's leaves and stems, contributing to the garden's overall sensory experience. Mature foliage plants can vary in height, often reaching impressive sizes that add structure to the garden. The choice of location and care practices can influence their growth, making them ideal for creating layers and visual interest. Consider incorporating semi-shade foliage plants for added diversity and tranquillity in the garden.

Foliage plants, also known as leafy plants or lush leaf plants, are a wonderful addition to any garden. These plants are admired for their decorative foliage, which comes in various shapes, colours, and textures. The leaves can be broad, narrow, smooth, or textured, and they often change colour with the seasons. Some foliage plants are evergreen, keeping their leaves all year round, while others shed their leaves in winter, depending on the species and climate.

When it comes to winter hardiness, foliage plants vary. Some are more frost-tolerant, thriving in colder temperatures, while others need protection from harsh winds and freezing conditions. The soil condition also plays a role, as well-drained soil can help prevent frost damage. In terms of heat and drought resistance, many foliage plants have adapted to survive in dry conditions. Their leaf structure, often with a waxy coating or fine hairs, helps reduce water loss. Deep root systems also allow them to access moisture from deeper soil layers.

Foliage plants are generally safe for gardens with children and pets, as they are not toxic when used normally. They contribute significantly to biodiversity, providing food and shelter for various insects and animals. By mimicking natural habitats, these plants help maintain ecosystem balance and increase garden resilience against diseases and pests. For those looking to enhance their garden with shade foliage plants, these plants offer tranquillity and structure without the need for flowers, making them ideal for creating a peaceful garden environment.

Site and soil preferences for leafy growth

Consider the plant's natural habitat and adjust accordingly. Wind can be a concern for foliage plants, as strong gusts may damage delicate leaves. Planting in sheltered spots or using windbreaks can help protect them. The ideal soil for foliage plants is well-draining and rich in organic matter. A mix of loam and compost works well, ensuring nutrients are available. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth. Soil moisture is crucial; it should be consistently moist but not waterlogged. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and amending the soil can optimise conditions. By understanding these needs, foliage plants can become stunning features in any garden, offering decorative foliage and structure.

When and how to plant foliage-rich varieties

Foliage plants, known for their decorative foliage, can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots. However, avoid planting during frost periods. For plants with a root ball or bare roots, the best time is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The planting distance for foliage plants depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Generally, the number of plants per metre or square metre is specified on the product page. This ensures the plants have enough space to grow and thrive. Proper soil preparation is crucial for foliage plants. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. This helps the plants establish strong roots and promotes healthy growth. When planting foliage plants, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, and water thoroughly. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks after planting, to help the plants settle in their new environment. Foliage plants add structure and tranquillity to any garden, making them a popular choice for creating a lush, leafy landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions Foliage plants

In what period can I best plant foliage plants?

The optimal period for planting foliage plants is during the spring or autumn months. This timing allows the plants to establish themselves while the soil is moist and the temperatures are mild, which promotes root growth. Avoid planting during the height of summer or the cold of winter, as extreme temperatures can stress the plants. Spring planting is particularly beneficial as it gives foliage plants the entire growing season to mature and strengthen.

What popular types of foliage plants are there?

Popular varieties of foliage plants include the striking Hosta 'Sum and Substance', known for its large, lush leaves, and Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' which offers dramatic purple foliage. Elaeagnus × ebbingei is appreciated for its silvery leaves, while Acanthus mollis is sought after for its architectural form. For shaded areas, Polystichum setiferum and Cyrtomium falcatum provide lush greenery, and Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' adds a splash of golden color.

In which soil type do most foliage plants grow well?

Foliage plants generally prefer well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Soil types can vary from loamy to sandy or even clay, depending on the specific requirements of each plant. It is crucial to ensure the soil is not waterlogged, as poor drainage can lead to root rot. Adjusting the soil with compost or other organic material can enhance its structure, provide nutrients, and create an ideal growing environment for foliage plants.

Which plants can be combined well with foliage plants?

To create a diverse and attractive garden, foliage plants can be combined with ornamental grasses, ferns, and perennials. The varied textures and colors of ornamental grasses complement the broad leaves of foliage plants, while ferns add delicate fronds to the mix. Perennials can intersperse seasonal blooms, adding a dynamic visual element. Such combinations yield a garden that is rich in contrast and interest throughout the growing season.

Which is the best period for transplanting foliage plants?

The best time for transplanting foliage plants is during their dormant periods, either in early spring before new growth begins or in the autumn after the growing season has ended. Transplanting during these times minimizes stress on the plant and allows the root system to establish without the immediate demand of supporting new top growth. It is important to water the plants thoroughly after transplanting to encourage new root development.

What function can foliage plants have in a garden?

Foliage plants serve several functions in a garden. They provide a backdrop for flowering plants, contribute to the garden's overall texture and color palette, and can be used to create focal points or to define garden spaces. Given their varied leaf shapes, sizes, and colors, foliage plants are excellent for creating contrasts and visual interest in both shaded and sunny areas, enhancing the garden's aesthetic appeal throughout the year.
