Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

What are red flowers perennials and how do they catch the eye?

Red flowering perennials are plants that bloom year after year, showcasing vibrant red hues. These plants, like flowering perennials, are known for their deep crimson perennial blooms and bright red garden plants. They add a fiery touch to any garden, making them perfect for red-flowering gardens and red-flowering borders. These perennials are often referred to as fiery perennials or bold red flowers. They are used to create stunning borders and vibrant red perennials for gardens. Popular genera include Lychnis, Papaver, Lobelia, Astilbe, and Crocosmia. Each offers unique shades of red, from deep red and carmine red to burgundy red and cherry red. In the garden, red flowering perennials are used to create red-toned borders and gardens with red colour accents. They catch the eye with their fiery red, wine red, and scarlet tones, making them a favourite for those looking to add a splash of colour. Whether used in gardens with red colour accents or as part of a red-flowering border, these perennials are sure to impress.

Traits of scarlet, crimson and deep red bloomers

Red flowering perennials are a vibrant addition to any garden. These fiery perennials grow in various forms, from compact mounds to tall, upright structures. They can spread widely, creating bold red flowers that catch the eye. The development of these plants begins in early spring, with shoots emerging as the soil warms. By summer, they reach their full height, showcasing their stunning red flowers. The blooming months for red flowering perennials vary, often starting in late spring and continuing through summer. Climate and weather conditions play a significant role, with warmer temperatures encouraging earlier blooms. The age of the plant and soil preparation also affect flowering times. Proper care, such as regular watering and fertilising, ensures a healthy display. The bloom colours of these perennials range from deep red to carmine red, with some varieties offering cherry red or wine red hues. Factors like soil type, light exposure, and plant variety influence the intensity of the colour. Scarlet perennial plants thrive in well-drained soil and full sun, enhancing their vibrant appearance. While not all red flowering perennials are known for their scent, some do offer a subtle fragrance. The intensity of the scent can depend on the specific variety and growing conditions. These plants contribute to biodiversity, attracting pollinators to the garden. Mature red flowering perennials can reach different heights, from low-growing varieties to those that stand tall. The choice of location and care practices, such as pruning, affect their final height. These plants are perfect for red-flowering gardens, adding depth and interest to red-toned borders and gardens.

Red flowering perennials are a vibrant addition to any garden. These plants have leaves that vary in shape, colour, and texture. The leaves can be oval, lance-shaped, or even heart-shaped, often in shades of green. Some have smooth surfaces, while others might be slightly hairy or waxy, helping them retain moisture. In winter, many red flowering perennials lose their leaves, but some, like evergreen varieties, keep their foliage year-round, depending on the species and climate.

Winter hardiness is crucial for red flowering perennials. They can withstand cold temperatures, but factors like the duration of frost, wind exposure, and soil conditions play a role. Choosing the right species for the local climate ensures they survive harsh winters. Some perennials are evergreen, maintaining their leaves through winter, while others shed them annually. This depends on the plant type and the garden's location.

Heat and drought resistance are also important. Many red flowering perennials originate from warm climates, making them suitable for hot, dry conditions. Their leaf structure, such as a waxy coating or fine hairs, helps reduce water loss. A deep root system allows them to access moisture from deeper soil layers, making them resilient during dry spells.

Regarding safety, red flowering perennials are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They contribute to biodiversity by attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies, supporting the garden ecosystem. These plants provide food and shelter for various wildlife, enhancing the garden's natural balance and resilience against pests.

Garden uses for red flowers in focal points

Red flowering perennials, also known as scarlet perennial plants or blood-red garden perennials, can add a dramatic touch to any garden. These fiery perennials are perfect for creating bold red flowers that stand out. Here are some ways to use them in the garden:

    • Border: Use red perennials for stunning borders to create a vibrant edge around the garden.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups for a striking display of deep red, carmine red, and burgundy red tones.
    • Solitary: Place a single plant as a focal point to draw attention with its cherry red or wine red blooms.
    • Hedge: Create a hedge or boundary with red flowering perennials for a fiery red backdrop.
    • Containers: Use pots or planters to showcase these vibrant red perennials for gardens with red colour accents.
    • Privacy Screen: Use as a sightline breaker to add privacy with their bold red flowers.
    • Insect Corner: Attract beneficial insects by creating a biodiversity zone with these scarlet plants.
For those looking to buy red flowering perennials, these plants offer a range of red tones, from scarlet to burgundy, perfect for any garden setting.

Best plant partners for red flowering plants

Red flowering perennials can create a striking display in any garden. These fiery perennials pair well with a variety of other plant types to enhance their bold red flowers. Consider combining them with ornamental grasses, which add texture and movement. The soft, swaying grasses contrast beautifully with the deep crimson perennial blooms, creating a dynamic visual effect. Another excellent combination is with silver-leaved plants like Artemisia. The cool, silvery foliage provides a stunning backdrop for bright red garden plants, making the red tones pop even more. For a more vibrant look, mix red flowering perennials with yellow or orange blooms. This creates a warm, inviting atmosphere in gardens with red colour accents. These combinations work well because they balance the intensity of the red flowers with complementary colours and textures. The contrast between the fiery red and the cooler or warmer tones creates a harmonious yet eye-catching display. Whether aiming for red-flowering borders or vibrant red perennials for gardens, these plant partners ensure a stunning and cohesive look.

Soil and light needs for reds to thrive

Red flowering perennials, like scarlet perennial plants and blood-red garden perennials, thrive best in full sun. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily to produce bold red flowers. Partial shade can be tolerated, but it may affect the vibrancy of the fiery perennials. Wind can be a concern for red perennials, as strong gusts may damage the delicate blooms. Planting them near a windbreak or using garden stakes can help protect them. The ideal soil for red flowering perennials is well-draining and rich in organic matter. A mix of loam and sand is perfect, as it allows for good drainage while retaining enough moisture. Regular fertilisation supports their growth, ensuring the soil remains nutrient-rich. Soil moisture is crucial for red flowers perennials. They prefer consistently moist soil, but not waterlogged. Wind and sun exposure can dry out the soil, so mulching can help retain moisture. The pH preference for red flowering perennials is slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.0 to 7.0. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting the pH can enhance their growth. These plants add stunning red-flowering accents to gardens, creating vibrant red-toned borders and gardens with deep red, carmine red, and burgundy red hues.

Planting red perennials – tips and timing

Red flowering perennials, like deep crimson perennial blooms, can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors such as soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. When considering plant spacing for bright red garden plants, the type and size at planting, growth rate, and number of plants per metre are important. Information on the number of plants per metre or square metre is usually found on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for fiery perennials. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. This helps bold red flowers thrive. For planting instructions, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting. Red perennials need regular watering, especially in dry periods, to establish well. This care ensures vibrant red-flowering gardens and red-flowering borders.

    Maintaining Strong Red Perennials

Red flowering perennials, also known as scarlet perennial plants or blood-red garden perennials, add vibrant colour to any garden. Proper care ensures these red perennials thrive.

    • Care and Maintenance: Red flowering perennials need well-drained soil and full sun. Regularly check soil moisture and adjust watering as needed.
    • Pruning Advice: Prune red perennials in late winter or early spring. Use sharp tools to remove dead or damaged stems, promoting healthy growth.
    • Fertilising: Fertilise in early spring with a balanced fertiliser. Apply every 4-6 weeks during the growing season for optimal blooms.
    • Watering: Water deeply once a week, ensuring soil is moist but not waterlogged. Check if the plant needs water by feeling the topsoil.
    • Dividing: Divide red flowering perennials every 3-4 years in early spring. This encourages vigorous growth and prevents overcrowding.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base in late autumn to protect roots from frost. Remove mulch in early spring as temperatures rise.
    • Transplanting: Transplant in early spring or autumn. Water thoroughly after moving to reduce transplant shock.
For those looking to enhance their red-flowering gardens, consider adding deep red, carmine red, or fiery red varieties. To buy red flowering perennials, explore options that suit your garden's needs.

What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.
