Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application

Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

What are flowering perennials and what makes them unique?

Flowering perennials are plants that bloom year after year, bringing vibrant colour to gardens. These plants, such as Echinacea and Delphinium, are known for their ability to survive through different seasons. Unlike annuals, which need replanting each year, flowering perennials return, making them a sustainable choice for any garden. They are often called long-flowering plants or decorative perennials due to their extended blooming period and ornamental value. In gardens, flowering perennials are used to create colourful displays and attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. They are ideal for perennial borders and cut flower gardens, providing a continuous source of blooms. Popular choices include Lupinus and Campanula, which are known for their elegant blooms. These plants are perfect for those looking to add long-blooming perennials for borders or seeking the best flowering perennials for summer colour. With their ability to thrive in various conditions, flowering perennials are a favourite for creating vibrant and ecological gardens.

Key features of long-lasting bloomers

Flowering perennials are a wonderful addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading wide to fill spaces with vibrant colours. Blooming perennials can develop into bushy shapes, providing a lush appearance. The growth of these perennial flowers is steady, starting from small shoots in spring and reaching full maturity by summer. The blooming period of flowering perennials varies, often influenced by climate and weather conditions. In warmer climates, these plants may bloom earlier, while cooler temperatures can delay flowering. Proper soil preparation and care are essential for optimal growth. The colours of flowering perennials are diverse, ranging from bright yellows to deep purples. Factors like soil type, light exposure, and plant variety play a role in the intensity of these colours. Some perennials, like those in colourful gardens, are known for their striking hues. While not all flowering perennials are fragrant, some varieties offer a pleasant scent. This can enhance the sensory experience in a garden, attracting bees and butterflies. The fragrance depends on the plant's species and environmental conditions. Mature flowering perennials can reach impressive heights, adding layers to a garden's design. Choosing the right location and providing proper care ensures these plants thrive. They are perfect for creating vibrant gardens and can be combined with other perennials for a stunning display. Consider adding these elegant bloomers to a garden for long-lasting beauty.

Flowering perennials are a popular choice for gardeners seeking vibrant gardens. These perennial flowers come in various shapes and colours, with some having smooth leaves while others have textured surfaces. The leaf colour can range from deep green to variegated patterns, adding interest even when not in bloom. Factors like sunlight, soil type, and climate influence leaf characteristics. Some flowering perennials lose their leaves in winter, while others remain evergreen, depending on the species and local climate conditions.

Winter hardiness is crucial for flowering perennials. They vary in frost sensitivity, with some thriving in cold temperatures and others needing protection. The period of frost, wind exposure, and soil conditions all play a role in their survival. Choosing the right type for the local climate ensures a flourishing garden.

Many flowering perennials are heat and drought-resistant, thanks to their origins and adaptations like deep root systems and waxy leaf coatings. These features help them conserve water and withstand dry spells, making them ideal for sunny spots in the garden.

In terms of safety, flowering perennials are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They can be enjoyed without worry, as long as standard gardening practices are followed.

Flowering perennials also support biodiversity. They provide food and shelter for bees and butterflies, contributing to ecological gardens. Their long blooming periods and ornamental value make them perfect for colourful gardens, enhancing the garden's resistance to pests and diseases. These elegant bloomers are a staple in any vibrant garden, offering beauty and ecological benefits.

Combining flowering perennials with shrubs and grasses

Flowering perennials are a wonderful addition to any garden, offering long-lasting blooms and vibrant colours. These decorative perennials can be beautifully combined with shrubs and grasses to create a stunning display. For example, pairing flowering perennials like Echinacea or Rudbeckia with ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus or Pennisetum adds texture and movement to the garden. Shrubs like Spiraea or Berberis provide a contrasting backdrop with their rich foliage, enhancing the colourful blooms of the perennials.

These combinations are not only visually appealing but also beneficial for creating ecological gardens. The mix of flowering perennials and shrubs attracts bees and butterflies, supporting local wildlife. Additionally, the varied heights and textures of these plants create depth and interest in the garden, making it a vibrant and dynamic space. Long-flowering plants like Salvia or Coreopsis can be used in perennial borders to ensure continuous colour throughout the season. By choosing the best flowering perennials for summer colour, gardeners can enjoy a flower-rich garden that is both elegant and full of life.

Preferred soil and location for strong flowering

Flowering perennials thrive in various light conditions, but most prefer full sun to partial shade. The amount of sunlight affects their growth and blooming. Too much shade can reduce flower production, while too much sun can dry out the soil. Wind can be a concern for flowering perennials, as strong gusts may damage delicate blooms. Planting them in sheltered spots or using windbreaks can help protect them. The ideal soil for flowering perennials is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy loam or loamy soil types are best, as they allow roots to breathe and absorb nutrients. Regular fertilisation and good drainage promote healthy growth and abundant blooms. Soil moisture is crucial; it should be consistent but not waterlogged. Wind and sun exposure can dry the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. Flowering perennials prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH, around 6.0 to 7.0. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting it can enhance plant health. These perennials are perfect for vibrant gardens, bee and butterfly gardens, and perennial border flowers, adding colour and life to any space.

Planting tips and timing for floral perennials

Flowering perennials can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. The distance between flowering perennials depends on the plant type, initial size, growth rate, and the number of plants per metre. This information is usually available on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for flowering perennials. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting to help the roots establish. Regular watering is essential, especially in dry periods, to maintain healthy growth. Flowering perennials, also known as long-flowering plants or decorative perennials, are perfect for creating vibrant gardens, bee and butterfly gardens, and colourful gardens. They add ornamental value and are ideal for perennial border flowers and flower-rich garden plants.

How to Maintain Flowering Perennials

Flowering perennials are a wonderful addition to any garden, offering vibrant colours and attracting bees and butterflies. Proper care ensures they thrive year after year.

  • Care and Maintenance: Flowering perennials need well-drained soil and a sunny spot. Regularly remove dead flowers to encourage new blooms.
  • Pruning Advice: Prune in late winter or early spring. Use sharp tools to cut back old growth, promoting healthy new shoots.
  • Fertilising: Fertilise in early spring with a balanced fertiliser. Repeat every 6-8 weeks during the growing season for best results.
  • Watering: Water deeply once a week, especially during dry spells. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, it's time to water.
  • Dividing: Divide every 3-4 years in early spring to rejuvenate plants and prevent overcrowding.
  • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base in late autumn to protect roots from frost.
  • Transplanting: Best done in early spring. Water well after moving to help roots establish.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider adding more flowering perennials. They not only beautify the space but also support ecological gardens. Explore options to buy flowering perennials and create a colourful garden.
