Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

    What are shade-loving perennials?

Shade perennials are plants that thrive in areas with limited sunlight. These plants are perfect for gardens with spots that receive little to no direct sun. Shade-loving perennials, also known as dark garden area perennials, are ideal for creating a lush and vibrant garden in shaded areas. They are often used in gardens under trees, along north-facing walls, or in corners that do not get much light. Shade perennials include a variety of species such as Dryopteris, Epimedium, and Helleborus. These plants are well-suited for deep shade and can add texture and colour to any garden. Perennials for shady areas are not only beautiful but also low-maintenance, making them a popular choice for gardeners. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, shade-tolerant perennials are practical for filling in spaces where other plants might struggle. They are perfect for under trees and shrubs, or along shaded fences. Whether looking for the best perennials for shady gardens or low-light garden flowers, these plants offer a solution for every dark garden corner.

Traits of plants thriving in low-light conditions

Shade perennials are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These low-light perennial plants adapt well to shaded areas, growing in various forms and sizes. They often spread horizontally, covering ground efficiently. The development of shade perennials begins in early spring, with shoots emerging as temperatures rise. By summer, they reach maturity, showcasing lush foliage and sometimes flowers. The blooming period for shade-loving perennials varies, often occurring in late spring to early summer. Factors like climate, temperature, and soil preparation influence their flowering. In cooler climates, they may bloom later, while warmer areas see earlier blooms. The colour of flowers in full-shade garden perennials ranges from whites and pinks to deep purples, depending on the species and soil conditions. Light exposure and care also affect bloom colours. Some shade perennials are known for their fragrance, adding a sensory element to gardens. The scent can come from leaves or flowers, with intensity varying by species and growing conditions. Mature shade perennials can reach different heights, from ground-hugging varieties to taller plants. Their height depends on the species, care, and location. They are ideal for creating layers in a garden, offering visual interest and texture. When planning a garden, consider buying shade perennials to enhance areas under trees, along north-facing walls, or in dark garden corners.

Shade perennials are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants have unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be heart-shaped, oval, or lanceolate, often in shades of green, purple, or variegated patterns. The texture varies from smooth to hairy, helping them adapt to low-light conditions. Most shade perennials retain their leaves year-round, but some may shed them in winter, depending on the species and climate. Winter hardiness is crucial for shade perennials. They can withstand cold temperatures, but factors like wind exposure and soil conditions play a role. Deep shade plants are generally more frost-tolerant, thriving in sheltered spots with well-drained soil. Many shade perennials are evergreen, keeping their foliage throughout the year. However, some may lose leaves annually, influenced by species choice and local climate. These plants are also heat and drought-resistant. Their origins in shaded forests mean they have adapted to conserve moisture. Features like a waxy leaf coating or deep root systems help them survive dry spells. Shade perennials are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no risk, and they can be handled safely during gardening activities. In terms of biodiversity, shade perennials support garden ecosystems. They provide food and shelter for insects and small animals, enhancing the garden's resilience against pests. By mimicking natural habitats, they contribute to a balanced ecosystem, making them an excellent choice for sustainable gardening.

Where and how to use perennials in shaded gardens

Shade perennials are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These low-light perennial plants thrive in areas where other plants might struggle. Here are some ways to use shade-loving perennials in your garden:

    • Border: Use shade perennials to create a lush border along paths or garden edges.
    • Group Planting: Plant in groups for a fuller look in shady areas, enhancing the garden's depth.
    • Under Trees: Ideal for planting under trees and shrubs where sunlight is scarce.
    • North-facing Walls: Perfect for areas with little to no direct sunlight, like north-facing walls or shaded fences.
    • Containers: Grow in pots or containers to add greenery to patios or balconies with limited light.
    • Privacy Screen: Use as a natural privacy screen or windbreak in shaded spots.
    • Insect Zone: Create a biodiversity zone to attract beneficial insects.

Consider these ideas when planning a shaded garden. For those looking to buy shade perennials, these plants offer beauty and resilience in low-light conditions, making them the best perennials for shady gardens.

Companion plants for dark garden corners

Shade perennials can transform a dark garden area into a vibrant space. These plants thrive in low-light conditions and can be combined with various other plant types. For instance, ferns and hostas are excellent companions for shade-loving perennials. Ferns add a delicate texture, while hostas provide bold foliage. Another great combination is astilbes with heucheras. Astilbes offer feathery blooms, and heucheras bring colourful leaves, creating a striking contrast. These combinations work well because they utilise the unique characteristics of each plant. Ferns and hostas both enjoy the same moist, shaded conditions, making them ideal partners. Astilbes and heucheras thrive in similar environments, ensuring a harmonious garden. Additionally, these plants are low-maintenance, perfect for gardeners seeking easy-care options. Choosing the best perennials for shady gardens can enhance the beauty of any space. Consider deep shade plants like Solomon's seal or bleeding heart for more variety. These perennials for shady areas not only survive but flourish in spots without sunlight, such as under trees and shrubs or along north-facing walls. By selecting the right shade-tolerant perennials, a garden can become a lush, inviting retreat.

Soil & conditions for shady success

Shade perennials thrive in areas with limited sunlight. These low-light perennial plants prefer partial to full shade, making them ideal for gardens with north-facing walls or shaded fences. Factors like tree cover and building shadows can affect light levels. While shade perennials are generally not wind-sensitive, providing a windbreak can help protect them in exposed areas. The best soil for shade-loving perennials is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Adding compost can improve soil quality and support growth. Regular fertilisation is important to maintain nutrient levels. Moisture is crucial for perennials in shady areas, as wind and sun can dry out the soil. Ensure the ground remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Shade perennials prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Soil testing can help determine the pH and guide any necessary adjustments. These perennials are perfect for dark garden corners, under trees and shrubs, or spots without sunlight. With the right conditions, perennials for deep shade can flourish and add beauty to any garden.

Planting shade-lovers – steps and timing

Shade perennials are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants can be planted year-round if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. The planting distance for shade-loving perennials depends on the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. Information on the number of plants per metre is usually found on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for shade perennials. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the plant, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain moisture, especially in the first few weeks. Shade-tolerant perennials thrive in dark garden areas, under trees, or along north-facing walls. They are excellent choices for deep shade spots and shaded fences. These perennials for shady areas bring life to places without sunlight, making them ideal for dark garden corners.

    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Repeat every 6-8 weeks during the growing season for optimal health.
    • Dividing: Divide plants every 3-4 years in early spring to maintain vigour. This helps prevent overcrowding and promotes healthy growth.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch with organic material in late autumn to protect roots from frost.
