Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

With their compact growth, these perennials are perfect for those seeking easy maintenance and a polished appearance.

    What defines small perennials?

Low-growing perennials, also known as dwarf perennials, are plants that stay short and compact. These plants are perfect for adding interest to the front of borders or as edging perennials. They are often used in gardens to create a neat and tidy look. Some popular types include Sedum, Geranium, Nepeta, Phlox subulata, and Dianthus. These plants are known for their compact growth and are ideal for small spaces like balconies and patios. Low-growing perennials are versatile and can be used as ground-hugging perennial plants. They are perfect for creating a lush carpet of greenery. These perennials are also great for edging paths and borders, providing a natural and attractive boundary. With their low height, they allow taller plants to shine while adding texture and colour to the garden. Whether used as low bloomers for balcony and patio or as perennials for front border use, these plants are a valuable addition to any garden.

    Traits of compact, ground-hugging plants

Low-growing perennials, also known as short perennial plants or compact garden perennials, are perfect for adding texture and colour to the front of borders. These compact perennials spread horizontally, creating a dense mat that covers the ground. They are ideal as border edgers and can be used as ground-hugging perennial plants. The development of low-growing perennials begins in early spring. They emerge from dormancy and gradually fill out, reaching their full size by late spring or early summer. These small perennials are known for their steady growth, making them reliable choices for gardeners. The blooming period for low-growing perennials varies depending on the species and climate. Most bloom in late spring to early summer, but some may continue to flower into autumn. Factors like temperature, soil quality, and care influence their flowering time. Regular watering and proper soil preparation enhance their blooming potential. The bloom colours of these compact perennials range from vibrant reds and pinks to soft whites and purples. The specific hue depends on the species and cultivar. Soil conditions, light exposure, and climate also play a role in determining the intensity of the colours. While not all low-growing perennials are known for their fragrance, some do offer a pleasant scent. The intensity of the aroma can vary based on the plant's age and environmental conditions. These fragrant varieties can add an extra sensory dimension to a garden. Mature low-growing perennials typically reach a height of 10 to 30 cm. Their compact size makes them suitable for edging and paths, as well as for use in balcony and patio gardens. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care ensures they thrive and maintain their ornamental appeal.

Low-growing perennials, also known as dwarf perennials, are perfect for adding texture and colour to the front of borders. These compact perennials have a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and structures. Leaves can be round, oval, or lance-shaped, with colours ranging from deep green to silvery grey. The texture can be smooth or slightly hairy, which helps in retaining moisture. Some low-growing perennials are evergreen, keeping their leaves year-round, while others shed leaves in winter, depending on the species and climate. Winter hardiness is crucial for low-growing perennials. They can withstand cold temperatures, but factors like wind exposure and soil conditions play a role. Well-drained soil and sheltered spots help them survive frost. In terms of heat and drought resistance, many low-growing perennials are adapted to dry conditions. Their leaf structure, often with a waxy coating or fine hairs, reduces water loss. Deep root systems also help them access moisture during dry spells. Regarding safety, low-growing perennials are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. They contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals. These plants can mimic natural habitats, supporting ecosystem balance and increasing garden resilience against pests. Low-growing perennials are ideal for edging paths and borders, offering a neat appearance. They are also suitable for balconies and patios, where space is limited. These small perennials are versatile, making them a valuable addition to any garden design.

Where to use low perennials for edging or contrast

Low-growing perennials are perfect for adding structure and colour to any garden. These compact garden perennials are versatile and can be used in various ways to enhance outdoor spaces. Here are some ideas on how to use them effectively:

    • Border Edging: Low-growing perennials make excellent border edgers, creating neat and tidy lines along garden paths and flower beds.
    • Front of Borders: Use short perennial plants at the front of borders to add depth and contrast, ensuring taller plants don't overshadow them.
    • Ground Cover: These ground-hugging perennial plants are ideal for covering bare soil, reducing weeds, and adding a lush green carpet.
    • Containers and Pots: Compact perennials thrive in pots and containers, making them perfect for balconies and patios.
    • Pathway Edging: Use low ornamental plants along pathways to create a charming and inviting garden path.
Consider adding these small perennials to your garden for a beautiful and low-maintenance landscape. Whether you want to buy low-growing perennials for edging or to create contrast, they offer endless possibilities for creative garden design.

Mixing low perennials with taller features

Low-growing perennials, also known as dwarf perennials, are perfect for creating a layered look in the garden. These compact perennials can be combined with taller plants to add depth and interest. For example, pair low-growing perennials like creeping thyme or sedum with taller ornamental grasses or flowering shrubs. This combination not only provides a beautiful contrast in height but also in texture and colour. Another great pairing is using low-growing perennials for the front of borders, such as ground-hugging perennial plants like ajuga or phlox, with taller perennials like delphiniums or hollyhocks at the back. This creates a stunning visual effect and ensures that all plants get the sunlight they need. These combinations are excellent because they allow for a continuous display of blooms throughout the seasons. Low-growing perennials are ideal for edging paths or borders, providing a neat and tidy appearance. They are also perfect for small spaces like balconies and patios, where space is limited. By mixing these small perennials with taller features, the garden becomes a dynamic and inviting space.

Soil and space needs for small perennials

Low-growing perennials, also known as short perennial plants or compact garden perennials, thrive in various light conditions. They prefer full sun to partial shade, depending on the specific type. Factors like location and surrounding plants can affect their light needs. These compact perennials are generally not wind-sensitive, but providing shelter with taller plants or garden structures can help protect them. The ideal soil for low-growing perennials is well-draining and rich in nutrients. Adding compost or organic matter can improve soil quality. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth. Soil moisture is crucial; these small perennials need consistent moisture but should not sit in waterlogged soil. Wind and sun exposure, along with soil type, influence moisture levels. Low-growing perennials prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. Soil pH can be adjusted with amendments if necessary. Understanding these factors ensures that these dwarf perennials, perfect for the front of borders or as edging perennials, flourish in any garden setting.

    Planting techniques for compact perennials

Low-growing perennials, also known as dwarf perennials, can be planted throughout the year if they are supplied in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls, the best time is spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. When considering plant spacing, the type and size of the perennial at planting time are important. Growth rate and the number of plants per metre are also crucial. Information about the number of plants per metre or square metre is usually available on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is key for low-growing perennials. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. This helps the roots establish quickly and promotes healthy growth. For planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting to help the plant settle. Regular watering is essential, especially in the first few weeks, to ensure the roots establish well. Compact perennials are perfect for edging paths and borders, adding a neat and tidy look to any garden.

How to Care for Low-Growing Perennials

Low-growing perennials, also known as short perennial plants or compact garden perennials, are perfect for adding charm to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive and bloom beautifully.

    • Care and Maintenance: These small perennials need well-drained soil and a sunny spot. Regularly remove dead leaves to keep them healthy.
    • Pruning Advice: Prune dwarf perennials in early spring to encourage new growth. Use sharp shears for clean cuts.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Repeat every six weeks during the growing season for best results.
    • Watering: Water low-growing perennials deeply once a week. Check soil moisture by touching the top layer; if dry, it's time to water.
    • Dividing: Divide compact perennials every 3-4 years in early spring. This helps rejuvenate the plant and encourages more blooms.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base of perennials for the front of borders to protect roots from frost.
    • Transplanting: Transplant low ornamental plants in early autumn. Water well after moving to help them settle.
For those looking to enhance their garden, consider buying low-growing perennials. These perennials for edging and paths are ideal for creating beautiful borders and adding interest to balconies and patios.
