Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

In the garden, blue flowering rock garden plants are used to create beautiful blue flowering borders and add cool-toned alpine plants to the landscape. They are ideal for gardens with blue colour accents, providing a serene and calming effect. Features of blue-toned blooms for alpine areas

Blue flowering rock garden plants are a stunning addition to any garden. These plants grow in various forms, often spreading low to the ground, making them perfect for rockeries. They can spread up to 30 cm wide, creating a beautiful carpet of blue hues. The development of blue flowering rock garden plants begins in early spring. They start as small shoots and gradually grow into lush plants by late spring. These plants reach maturity in a few months, depending on the climate and care they receive. The blooming period for these plants is typically from late spring to early summer. Factors like climate, temperature, and soil preparation play a crucial role in their flowering. Cooler climates and well-drained soil enhance their bloom. The flowers of blue flowering rock garden plants come in various shades, including indigo blue, cobalt blue, and lavender blue. The specific colour can depend on the plant variety, soil conditions, and sunlight exposure. These plants are not particularly known for their fragrance, but their visual appeal is unmatched. The leaves and stems do not emit a strong scent, making them ideal for those who prefer less aromatic gardens. At full maturity, blue flowering rock garden plants can reach a height of 15 to 30 cm. Their compact size makes them suitable for creating layered garden designs and adding blue accents to garden borders. Proper care and placement ensure they thrive and enhance the garden's beauty.

Blue flowering rock garden plants are a stunning addition to any garden. These plants have unique leaf shapes, colours, and textures. The leaves can be oval, lance-shaped, or even heart-shaped, often with a smooth or slightly hairy texture. The colour varies from deep green to a silvery hue, depending on the species. Some blue flowering rockery plants keep their leaves in winter, while others shed them, influenced by the plant type and climate conditions.

When it comes to winter hardiness, blue flowering rock garden plants can vary. Some are frost-tolerant, thriving in cold temperatures, while others need protection from harsh frosts. Factors like wind exposure, soil conditions, and the duration of frost periods play a role in their survival. Choosing the right species for the local climate is crucial.

Many blue flowering rock garden plants are evergreen, maintaining their foliage year-round. However, some may lose their leaves annually, similar to most perennials. This depends on the plant type, climate, and location in the garden.

These plants are often heat and drought-resistant, thanks to their origins in rocky, alpine environments. Their leaf structure, sometimes with a waxy coating or fine hairs, helps retain moisture. A deep root system allows them to access water in dry conditions, making them suitable for gardens with low water availability.

Blue flowering rock garden plants are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. They are harmless when used in typical garden settings, ensuring a safe environment for all.

These plants contribute to biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals. Their long blooming period and insect-friendly nature support local ecosystems, enhancing garden resilience against pests and diseases. Blue flowering rock garden plants are a beautiful and beneficial choice for any garden.

Using blue rockery flowers for colour and contrast

Blue flowering rock garden plants bring a serene touch to any garden. These sky-blue alpine flowers are perfect for adding cool-toned accents. Here are some ways to use azure-hued rock garden plants effectively:

    • Blue flowering borders: Create a striking border with blue flowers for rock gardens, offering a calm and cool contrast.
    • Group planting: Use best blue-flowering rock plants in groups to enhance the visual impact in a garden with blue colour accents.
    • Solitary planting: Place a single indigo blue plant as a focal point to draw attention.
    • Pot or planter: Buy blue flowering rock garden plants to add to pots, providing flexibility in garden design.
    • Underplanting: Use perennial rockery plants as underplanting to complement larger garden features.
    • Insect corner: Attract beneficial insects by creating a biodiversity zone with blue rockery plants.
    • Shade garden: Incorporate light blue and lavender blue plants in shaded areas for a soft, calming effect.

These cool and calm blue blooms can transform any garden into a peaceful retreat.

Good companion plants for blue rock blooms

Blue flowering rock garden plants can create a stunning display when combined with other plant types. These blue-toned rockery flowers pair beautifully with silver-leaved plants like Artemisia or Stachys, which enhance the cool-toned alpine plants' appearance. Adding yellow or white flowering perennials, such as Achillea or Iberis, can provide a striking contrast to the blue-coloured rocky plants. For a more diverse garden, consider mixing blue flowers for rock gardens with succulents like Sedum or Sempervivum. These plants not only complement the best blue-flowering rock plants but also thrive in similar conditions. Another option is to include grasses like Festuca or Carex, which add texture and movement to the garden with blue colour accents. These combinations work well because they balance the indigo blue, cobalt blue, and light blue hues of the blue flowering gardens. The contrast of dark blue and lavender blue with bright or neutral tones creates a visually appealing garden with blue flowering borders. Incorporating sapphire blue and ocean blue borders and gardens can further enhance the overall aesthetic, making the garden a vibrant and harmonious space.

Ideal conditions for healthy blue flowers

Blue flowering rock garden plants thrive in full sun to partial shade. These plants need at least six hours of sunlight daily to produce vibrant blooms. However, in hotter climates, some afternoon shade can prevent wilting. Wind can be a concern for blue rockery plants. To protect them, consider planting near a windbreak or using garden structures to shield them. The ideal soil for blue flowering rock garden plants is well-draining and slightly alkaline. Sandy or loamy soil types are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation supports growth, ensuring the plants receive necessary nutrients. Soil moisture is crucial for these plants. While they prefer a dry environment, occasional watering during dry spells helps maintain their health. Wind and sun exposure can increase evaporation, so monitor soil moisture levels regularly. Blue flowering rock garden plants prefer a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5. This range supports nutrient absorption and healthy growth. Testing soil pH and adjusting with lime or sulphur can optimise conditions. Incorporating sky-blue alpine flowers and azure-hued rock garden plants into a garden with blue colour accents creates a stunning visual effect. These cool-toned alpine plants add depth to blue flowering gardens and blue flowering borders.

How and when to plant blue rockery species

Blue flowering rock garden plants can be planted throughout the year if they are delivered in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls or bare roots, the best time is in spring or autumn. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate play a role in successful planting. When considering plant spacing, the type and size of the blue flowering rockery plants are important. Fast-growing species need more space, while smaller ones can be planted closer. The number of plants per metre is usually listed on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for blue-toned rockery flowers. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. This helps the roots establish quickly and supports healthy growth. For planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially during dry spells, to help the plants settle in. With the right care, blue-coloured rocky plants will thrive, adding stunning blue accents to any garden.

    Maintenance of Perennial Rockery Plants

Blue flowering rock garden plants add a stunning touch to any garden. These sky-blue alpine flowers thrive with proper care and maintenance.

    • Watering: Blue flowering rockery plants need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Check the soil moisture by touching it; if it feels dry, it's time to water. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
    • Pruning: Prune azure-hued rock garden plants in early spring to encourage new growth. Use sharp, clean tools to remove dead or damaged stems. Pruning helps maintain shape and promotes healthy blooms.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support growth. Use a slow-release formula to provide nutrients throughout the growing season. Avoid over-fertilising, which can harm the plants.
    • Dividing: Divide blue flowering rock garden plants every 3-4 years to prevent overcrowding. This process rejuvenates the plants and encourages more blooms. Best done in early spring or autumn.
    • Winter Protection: In colder climates, protect these plants with a layer of mulch to insulate roots. This helps them survive harsh winter conditions.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Ensure the new location has well-drained soil and receives adequate sunlight. Water thoroughly after transplanting to help establish roots.
For those looking to enhance their garden with blue colour accents, consider adding these indigo blue and cobalt blue beauties. To explore more options, buy blue flowering rock garden plants online.
