Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus
Show more
Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Traits of blooming and blush decorative grasses

Flowering ornamental grasses, also known as blooming garden grasses or colourful decorative grasses, are a stunning addition to any garden. These grasses grow in various forms, often reaching a height of 60 to 150 cm. They spread gracefully, creating a soft, flowing appearance. The growth pattern can vary, with some forming dense clumps while others spread more loosely. The development of flowering ornamental grasses begins in early spring. As temperatures rise, new shoots emerge, gradually maturing into lush, green foliage. By summer, these grasses reach their full height, showcasing their elegant plumes or spikes. The timing of this growth can depend on factors like climate, soil quality, and care. Flowering ornamental grasses typically bloom from late summer to early autumn. The exact months can vary based on weather conditions, temperature, and the age of the plant. Proper soil preparation and regular maintenance can enhance their blooming period. The bloom colours of these grasses range from soft pinks and purples to vibrant golds and reds. Factors such as species, cultivar, soil type, and light exposure influence these hues. Climate and care also play a role in the intensity of the colours. While not all flowering ornamental grasses are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a subtle fragrance. This can be influenced by the type of grass, the condition of the leaves and stems, and the overall health of the plant. Mature flowering ornamental grasses can reach impressive heights, adding vertical interest to gardens. Their height can be affected by location, care, and the specific variety chosen. These grasses are perfect for creating layers and adding texture to vibrant gardens.

Flowering ornamental grasses, also known as ornamental flowering grasses or blush grasses, are a stunning addition to any garden. These grasses have a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be narrow or broad, with shades ranging from green to blue-green, and some even have a reddish tint. The texture can be smooth or slightly rough, depending on the species. In winter, many flowering ornamental grasses lose their leaves, but some species remain evergreen, influenced by the climate and location. The winter hardiness of flowering ornamental grasses varies. Some species can withstand cold temperatures, while others are more sensitive to frost. Factors like the duration of frost, wind exposure, and soil conditions play a role in their survival. Choosing the right species for the local climate is crucial. Most flowering ornamental grasses are not evergreen and shed their leaves annually. This is typical for many perennial plants. The choice of species, climate, and garden location can affect whether they remain green throughout the year. These grasses are generally heat and drought-tolerant, thanks to their origins in dry regions. Their leaf structure, often with a waxy coating or fine hairs, helps retain moisture. A deep root system allows them to access water from deeper soil layers, making them resilient in dry conditions. Flowering ornamental grasses are safe for gardens with children and pets. They are non-toxic and pose no danger when used in normal gardening practices. These grasses support biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals. They mimic natural habitats, promoting ecological balance and enhancing garden resistance to pests. Flowering ornamental grasses are perfect for bee and butterfly gardens, adding vibrant colour and life.

In a bee and butterfly garden, combine ornamental flowering grasses with plants like Salvia or Monarda. The grasses' plumes provide a soft backdrop, enhancing the vivid hues of these pollinator-friendly flowers. For a more subtle look, pair blush grasses with silver-leaved plants like Artemisia. This combination creates a calming effect, perfect for an ecological garden. These combinations work well because flowering ornamental grasses offer movement and contrast. Their swaying plumes and spikes add dynamic interest, while their neutral tones balance the bright colours of flowering plants. Soil and light for flowering ornamental grass success

Flowering ornamental grasses thrive in full sun, needing at least six hours of sunlight daily. Partial shade can be tolerated, but full sun ensures vibrant blooms. Wind can affect these grasses, so planting near a fence or hedge can provide protection. The ideal soil for flowering ornamental grasses is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation supports growth, enhancing the beauty of blooming garden grasses. Soil moisture is crucial; these grasses prefer moderate moisture levels. Too much wind or sun can dry the soil, so mulching helps retain moisture. The pH preference for flowering ornamental grasses is slightly acidic to neutral, around 6.0 to 7.0. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting pH can improve growth. These colourful decorative grasses add vibrant accents to any garden, making them perfect for bee and butterfly gardens or cutting gardens. With the right care, ornamental flowering grasses can transform a garden into a vibrant, ecological haven.

Planting guide for flowering varieties

Flowering ornamental grasses can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost periods. For those with root balls, the best time is spring or autumn. The planting distance for these grasses depends on the type, size at planting, and growth rate. Generally, the number of plants per metre is specified on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is crucial for these grasses. Ensure the soil is well-drained and enriched with organic matter. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball, place the grass, and fill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain regular watering, especially in dry periods. These grasses thrive in flowering gardens, bee and butterfly gardens, and vibrant gardens, adding colour and texture. They are perfect for ecological gardens and cutting gardens, providing a habitat for wildlife. Flowering ornamental grasses, also known as ornamental flowering grasses or blush grasses, are ideal for creating colourful gardens with their decorative flowering spikes and inflorescence. They are excellent for adding colour accents and are a beautiful addition to any garden.

Use sharp shears to remove dead foliage, promoting fresh blooms. Fertilising helps maintain vibrant colours. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Frequently Asked Questions Flowering ornamental grasses

What function can flowering ornamental grasses have in a garden?

In a garden setting, flowering ornamental grasses serve multiple functions: they provide vertical interest with their height and graceful plumes, create a sense of movement with their responsive foliage, and offer seasonal color changes. Additionally, they can act as a natural privacy screen or as a serene backdrop for other garden plants.

Which is the best period for transplanting flowering ornamental grasses?

The best period for transplanting flowering ornamental grasses is in early spring, just as new growth begins, or in late autumn, after the growing season has ended. This allows the grasses to settle into their new location without the stress of high temperatures or active growth demands.

Which plants can be combined well with flowering ornamental grasses?

Flowering ornamental grasses can be beautifully combined with perennials, which provide color contrast, and with shrubs, which offer structural backdrop. They also pair well with bee-friendly and butterfly-friendly plants, creating an attractive habitat for pollinators while adding movement and texture to the garden.

In which soil type do most flowering ornamental grasses grow well?

Most flowering ornamental grasses prefer well-drained soil but can adapt to various soil types, from sandy to loamy. They typically require a soil that is not too rich, as overly fertile soil can lead to lush foliage at the expense of the desired flowering and structural form.
