Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Evergreen plants
Evergreen plants

Also known as leaf-retaining plants. These are plants that retain their leaves regardless of the season and continue to provide colour in the garden, even in winter.

Fragrant plants
Fragrant plants

This refers to whether the plant gives off a certain scent. In most cases, the scent of a fragrant plant comes from the leaves and/or flowers.

Partial Shade Plants: What are Partial Shade Perennials and How to Use Them?

Partial shade perennials are plants that thrive in areas with limited sunlight. These plants are perfect for gardens that receive morning or evening sun, or where sunlight is filtered through trees. Some popular genera include Hosta, Brunnera, Heuchera, Tiarella, and Pulmonaria. These perennials are known for their ability to grow in dappled sunlight and are ideal for spots under trees or next to hedges. Shade-tolerant perennial blooms, such as these, are often used to add colour and texture to areas where full sun perennials would struggle. They are also referred to as light shade perennials or perennials for dappled shade. These plants are perfect for creating a lush garden without the need for direct sunlight. Partial shade perennials are used to fill spaces in gardens where full sun is not available. They are excellent for adding interest and diversity to shaded areas, making them the best perennials for partial shade gardens. Flowering plants for light shade can transform a dull spot into a vibrant part of the garden. These perennials dislike full sun, making them perfect for areas with filtered sunlight.

    Features of light-shade tolerant plants

Partial shade perennials are perfect for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants thrive in areas with dappled light or semi-shaded conditions. They grow in various forms, from low ground covers to taller specimens, spreading gracefully to fill spaces under trees or next to hedges. The development of partial shade perennials begins in early spring. They emerge slowly, taking advantage of the filtered sunlight. As they mature, they adapt to the changing light conditions, reaching their full potential by late summer. Blooming months for these perennials vary, often starting in late spring and continuing through summer. Factors like climate, temperature, and soil preparation play a crucial role. Cooler climates may delay blooming, while well-drained soil and regular care encourage vibrant displays. The bloom colours of partial shade perennials range widely, from soft pastels to vivid hues. The specific colours depend on the species and cultivar, as well as soil quality and light exposure. Proper care ensures the most striking blooms. While not all partial shade perennials are known for their fragrance, some do offer a subtle scent. This can enhance the garden's biodiversity, attracting pollinators. The intensity of the fragrance depends on the plant's age and health. Mature height varies among these perennials, with some reaching up to 1.5 metres. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care ensures they complement the garden's layers and sightlines. For those looking to enhance their garden, consider options to buy partial shade perennials for a thriving, colourful display.

Partial shade perennials are a great choice for gardens with limited sunlight. These plants have leaves that vary in shape, colour, and texture. The leaves can be oval, lance-shaped, or heart-shaped, often with a glossy or matte finish. Colours range from deep green to variegated patterns, depending on the species. Some partial shade perennials lose their leaves in winter, while others remain evergreen, influenced by the plant type and local climate conditions.

Winter hardiness is crucial for partial shade perennials. They can withstand cold temperatures, but factors like frost duration, wind exposure, and soil conditions play a role. Choosing the right species for the local climate ensures better survival during frosty periods.

Many partial shade perennials are evergreen, retaining their leaves year-round. However, some may shed leaves annually, similar to most perennials. This depends on the plant species, climate, and location in the garden.

Heat and drought tolerance vary among partial shade perennials. Origin, leaf structure, and root depth influence their ability to withstand dry conditions. Plants with waxy or hairy leaves and deep roots are better suited for hot, dry environments.

Partial shade perennials are generally non-toxic and safe for gardens with children and pets. Normal garden use poses no danger, making them a safe choice for family gardens.

These perennials support biodiversity by providing food and shelter for insects and small animals. They mimic natural habitats, promoting ecosystem balance and increasing garden resilience against pests. Long-lasting blooms and shade-tolerant perennial blooms attract pollinators, enhancing garden biodiversity.

Where to plant in semi-shaded spots

Partial shade perennials are perfect for gardens that do not receive full sun all day. These plants thrive in areas with dappled light or filtered sunlight, making them ideal for semi-shaded garden spots. Here are some ways to use partial shade perennials in the garden:

    • Border: Use partial shade perennials to create beautiful borders along paths or garden edges.
    • Group planting: Plant in groups to add texture and colour to areas with dappled sunlight.
    • Under trees: These perennials are perfect for planting under trees where full sun is limited.
    • Hedges: Use them next to hedges to fill in gaps and add interest.
    • Containers: Grow in pots or planters to brighten up patios or balconies with limited sun.
    • Privacy screens: Plant as a natural screen to create privacy in the garden.
    • Insect zones: Attract beneficial insects by planting in biodiversity zones.

When planning a garden, consider the best perennials for partial shade gardens. These flowering plants for light shade can transform a space into a lush retreat. Remember, perennials for dappled shade or morning and evening sun are excellent choices for areas that dislike full sun. Explore options and buy partial shade perennials to enhance your garden's beauty.

Best partners for dappled light conditions

Partial shade perennials are perfect for gardens with dappled sunlight. These plants thrive when combined with other shade-tolerant perennial blooms. Consider pairing them with ferns, which add texture and depth. Hostas are another great choice, offering lush foliage that complements the flowering plants for light shade. Astilbes, with their feathery plumes, create a striking contrast with the broad leaves of light shade perennials. For a more colourful display, try combining partial shade perennials with heucheras. Their vibrant leaves provide a beautiful backdrop for the best perennials for partial shade gardens. Another option is to plant them alongside bleeding hearts, which bring delicate, arching flowers to the mix. These combinations work well because they all thrive in filtered sunlight and can handle the conditions under trees or next to hedges. By choosing perennials for morning or evening sun, the garden will have a variety of textures and colours throughout the seasons. This approach ensures a dynamic and visually appealing garden that flourishes in partial shade.

    Soil needs and sunlight balance

Partial shade perennials thrive in areas with filtered sunlight, making them ideal for gardens with dappled light. These plants prefer morning or evening sun, avoiding the harsh midday rays. Factors like nearby trees or hedges can provide the perfect light shade environment. Wind sensitivity varies among these perennials, but planting them near structures or using windbreaks can help reduce exposure. The ideal soil for partial shade perennials is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth. Soil moisture is crucial; these plants prefer consistent moisture without being waterlogged. Wind and sun exposure, along with soil type, influence moisture levels. Partial shade perennials generally prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting the pH can enhance growth. By understanding these needs, a thriving garden with perennials for partial shade can be achieved.

    Planting partial shade varieties

Partial shade perennials can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, climate, and location affect planting. Ensure the area receives filtered sunlight or dappled sunlight, as these plants thrive in such conditions. When considering plant spacing, the type and size of the perennial at planting time are crucial. Fast-growing varieties may need more space, while slower-growing ones can be planted closer. Typically, the number of plants per metre is specified on the product page. Proper soil preparation is vital. Loosen the soil and mix in organic matter to improve drainage and nutrient content. This helps perennials for partial shade establish well. For planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball. Place the plant at the same depth it was in the pot. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain moisture, especially during dry spells. Partial shade perennials, like shade-tolerant perennial blooms, need consistent care to flourish under trees or next to hedges.

    Maintenance for Partial Shade Perennials

Partial shade perennials thrive in areas with filtered sunlight, making them ideal for gardens under trees or next to hedges. Proper care ensures these plants flourish.

    • Watering: Partial shade perennials need consistent moisture. Water in the morning or evening when the soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering as it can harm the roots.
    • Pruning: Regular pruning encourages healthy growth. Trim in early spring or late autumn using clean, sharp tools. This helps maintain shape and remove dead foliage.
    • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Repeat every 6-8 weeks during the growing season to support robust growth.
    • Dividing: Divide perennials every 3-4 years in early spring. This prevents overcrowding and promotes vigorous blooms.
    • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base in late autumn to protect roots from frost. Remove mulch in early spring to allow new growth.
    • Transplanting: If needed, transplant in early spring. Water thoroughly after moving to reduce transplant shock.
Partial shade perennials, also known as dappled light perennials or semi-shaded garden plants, are perfect for areas with morning or evening sun. For those looking to enhance their garden, consider options to buy partial shade perennials for a vibrant display.
