Straight from the grower
Straight from the grower
We have been growing our plants with great passion since 1976. We are therefore proud that the third generation is now at the helm of our family business. All plants and trees we supply come either directly from our own nursery or from fellow nurseries that work in partnership with Heijnen. Through our close cooperation with various skilled growers, plant importers and other professionals, we guarantee products that are as fresh and high quality as possible. What this means for you is healthy and beautiful plants and trees straight from the nursery at competitive prices.

Height at time of delivery (cm)
Height at time of delivery (cm)

'Height without root ball' refers to the measurement of a plant or tree where the height is measured without taking into account the underlying root ball of roots and soil normally present when the plant is moved. When measuring height without root ball, only the visible part of the plant above ground, such as the trunk/stem, branches and leaves, is taken into account, while the root ball that is normally below ground is excluded from the measurement.

Mature height (cm)

The mature height of a plant is the height the plant reaches when it is mature. It is also called the maximum height. This height is given in centimetres and refers to the height of the visible part of the plant above the ground. In other words, the trunk/stem, branches and leaves. The root ball that is (normally) below the ground is excluded from this measurement. Location and soil type also affect mature plant height.

Genus

Genus

The genus is a taxonomic classification that includes several closely related species. Genus is a rank that is above the 'species' rank. The spelling of the genus name always includes one scientific name beginning with a capital letter. A genus cannot be ordered as a product; a species or variety can be ordered.

Positioning
Positioning

By positioning, we mean the number of hours of sunlight at the spot where the plants are to be placed. There are three categories for this, namely:

  • Sun - more than 4 hours of sun per day
  • Partial shade - up to 4 hours of sun per day
  • Shade - less than 2 hours of sun per day

The type of soil is of minor importance in most cases, unless otherwise stated for the product.

Growth habit
Show more
Growth habit

Growth habit is the way in which the plant grows and what general shape the plant has. Roughly speaking, we can divide our plants into the following categories:

  • Bushy spreading growth habit - in this growth habit, the plant grows bushy in both height and width.
  • Climbing growth habit - as the name suggests, a climbing plant. Suitable for positioning against a wall, fence or pergola.
  • Creeping wide-spreading growth habit - relatively low-growing and ground-covering plants that spread considerably, especially in width.
  • Upright growth habit - these plants grow mostly straight up and with virtually no overhang.
  • Upright to bushy growth habit - these plants tend to grow straight up and, especially as they grow taller, may overhang slightly.
  • Clump-forming and upright growth habit - these plants form a single clump from which stems, leaves and flowers grow. The taller the plant, the more the leaves and stems may overhang.
  • Clump-forming growth habit - these plants form a single clump and remain somewhat more compact in shape
  • Sod-forming growth habit - these plants form a dense carpet. Stems and leaves grow very closely together. You could compare this to the growth habit of a lawn.

Application
Show more
Application

By 'application' we mean how the planting can be used in the garden. In this, we distinguish between the possible applications below:

Border: also called a bed, this is a strip of ground (part of the garden) intended for planting. Due to the construction of paths, terraces and lawn, a garden often consists of multiple borders:

  • Group planting: plants that are at their best when placed together in small or large groups and can be easily combined with other garden plants if desired.
  • Edge planting: mostly low-growing plants that are suitable for use at the edge of borders and so provide a nice progression from low to tall plants.
  • Underplanting: mostly shade-loving plants that can be planted under large shrubs and trees.

Solitary: a plant (usually a larger shrub) that does best when planted alone and not with several of the same variety together. A solitary plant is a real eye-catcher and also provides 'body' to the garden. You place a solitary plant in a border in combination with (relatively) low-growing plants, for example.

Pot: a plant that grows well in a pot.

Planter: plants that are perfect for use in planters.

Hedge: plants that grow particularly tall and branch nicely through pruning. This makes them ideal for use as a natural screen (hedge). We offer hedge plants for both low and tall hedges.

Pergola: plants that are ideal for planting and growing against a pergola.

Fence: plants that can be grown against a fence or placed in front of a fence.

Wall: plants that can be grown against a wall or placed in front of a wall.

Trellis: plants that can be grown in a trellis to create more greenery and privacy in the garden.

Slope: plants that are ideal for planting on a slope.

Winter hardiness

A winter hardiness zone, also known as a USDA zone, is a classification system used to categorise climatic conditions based on winter temperatures (susceptibility to frost). These zones range from 1a (coldest) to 13b (mildest). These winter hardiness zones can help you find the right plants and trees that are sufficiently hardy for your region.

The winter temperatures the plant or tree can withstand is noted with each product. See the overview of winter hardiness zones here:

Traits of blooming and flower-rich creeping plants

Flowering ground covers, also known as blooming carpet plants or colourful ground cover, are a wonderful addition to any garden. These plants spread across the ground, creating a vibrant carpet of flowers. They grow in various forms, often spreading widely to cover large areas. This makes them ideal for sunny borders and vibrant gardens. The development of flowering ground covers begins in early spring. They start as small shoots and gradually spread, reaching their full size by summer. These plants are perennial bloomers, meaning they return year after year, providing consistent colour and coverage. Flowering ground covers typically bloom from late spring to early autumn. The exact blooming months can vary depending on climate, weather conditions, and care. Warmer temperatures and well-prepared soil can enhance their flowering period, making them a favourite in bee and butterfly gardens. The colours of flowering ground covers are diverse, ranging from soft pastels to bright, vibrant hues. Factors like species, soil quality, and sunlight affect their bloom colours. Proper care and maintenance ensure a colourful display throughout the season. While not all flowering ground covers are known for their scent, some varieties do offer a pleasant fragrance. This can add an extra layer of enjoyment to cutting gardens and ecological gardens, attracting pollinators and enhancing biodiversity. Mature flowering ground covers can vary in height, usually staying low to the ground. This makes them perfect for creating layers in a garden, complementing taller plants and adding depth to the landscape. Choosing the right location and providing adequate care will help these ornamental groundcover species thrive.

Flowering ground covers are a wonderful addition to any garden, providing a vibrant carpet of colour. These ornamental creeping plants have a variety of leaf shapes, colours, and textures. Leaves can be oval, lance-shaped, or even heart-shaped, with shades ranging from deep green to variegated patterns. The texture can be smooth or slightly hairy, which helps in retaining moisture. Most flowering ground covers are evergreen, keeping their leaves throughout winter, but some may lose foliage depending on the species and climate conditions.

When it comes to winter hardiness, flowering ground covers vary. Some are frost-tolerant, thriving in colder temperatures, while others may need protection. Factors like wind exposure and soil conditions play a role in their survival during frosty periods. In terms of heat and drought resistance, many flowering ground covers are quite resilient. Their origins often dictate their ability to withstand dry spells, with deep root systems and waxy or hairy leaves helping to conserve water.

These plants are generally non-toxic, making them safe for gardens with children and pets. They contribute significantly to biodiversity, attracting bees and butterflies with their long-lasting blooms. Flowering ground covers can mimic natural habitats, supporting ecological balance and enhancing garden resistance to pests. They offer food and shelter to various garden creatures, promoting a healthy ecosystem. Whether used in bee and butterfly gardens or as colourful ground carpeting, these floral spreaders are a versatile choice for any vibrant garden.

  • Border: Use flowering ground covers for sunny borders to create a vibrant edge that blooms throughout the season.
  • Group Planting: Plant in groups for a stunning floral spread that acts as a natural carpet.
  • Underplanting: Ideal for underplanting larger shrubs or trees, providing a colourful base layer.
  • Pot or Planter: Perfect for pots or planters, adding a splash of colour to patios or balconies.
  • Bee and Butterfly Gardens: Attract pollinators by using these plants in bee and butterfly gardens.
Flowering ground cover plants are available in various species, making it easy to find the right one for any garden style. Consider long-blooming ground cover plants for extended colour. When planning a garden, buy flowering ground covers to ensure a lively and ecological garden space.

Ideal plant partners for flowering ground cover

Flowering ground covers can be beautifully combined with various plant types to create a vibrant garden. These ornamental creeping plants work well with taller perennials like Echinacea and Rudbeckia, which add height and contrast. For a more colourful garden, consider pairing them with Salvia or Coreopsis. These combinations not only enhance the visual appeal but also attract bees and butterflies, making the garden more ecological. Another great combination is with ornamental grasses. The soft texture of grasses complements the floral spreaders, creating a dynamic and natural look. Flower-rich ground plants like creeping thyme or sedum can also be used to fill gaps between stepping stones, adding a touch of colour and fragrance. These combinations are effective because they provide a mix of textures and heights, ensuring year-round interest. The long-blooming ground cover plants offer a continuous display of flowers, while the taller plants provide structure. This mix is ideal for sunny borders, where the flowering ground covers thrive. By choosing the right partners, a garden can become a lively and ecological space, full of life and colour.

Where and how to grow floral ground cover plants

Flowering ground covers, also known as blooming carpet plants or colourful ground cover, thrive in various light conditions. They prefer full sun to partial shade, depending on the species. Sunlight is crucial for vibrant blooms, but too much can cause wilting. Wind can affect these plants, making them prone to damage. Planting them in sheltered spots or using windbreaks can help protect them. The ideal soil for flowering ground covers is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Sandy or loamy soils are best, as they prevent waterlogging. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth. Soil moisture is vital; these plants need consistent watering, especially in sunny or windy areas. The soil should be moist but not soggy. Flowering ground covers prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. A pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal. Soil pH affects nutrient availability, so testing and adjusting it can enhance plant health. These plants are perfect for flowering gardens, bee and butterfly gardens, and vibrant gardens, adding a splash of colour and life to any space.

When to plant and how to space flowering ground covers

Flowering ground covers can be planted throughout the year if they come in pots, except during frost. For those with roots or clumps, spring and autumn are ideal. Factors like soil type, sunlight, and climate affect planting success. When planting flowering ground covers, consider the plant type, initial size, and growth rate. The number of plants per metre or square metre is crucial and can be found on the plant's product page. Proper soil preparation is key for flowering ground covers. Loosen the soil and remove weeds to ensure healthy growth. Planting instructions for flowering ground covers include digging a hole twice the size of the root ball, placing the plant, and filling with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and regularly during dry spells. This helps ornamental creeping plants establish well. Flower-rich ground plants thrive with the right care, adding beauty to any garden.

Maintenance for Long-Lasting Flowering Ground Cover Plants

Flowering ground covers, also known as blooming carpet plants or colourful ground cover, are a great addition to any garden. Proper care ensures they thrive and spread beautifully.

  • Care and Maintenance: These plants need well-drained soil and partial to full sun. Regular weeding helps them grow without competition.
  • Pruning Advice: Prune after flowering to encourage new growth. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damage.
  • Fertilising: Fertilise in early spring with a balanced fertiliser. This supports healthy blooms and growth.
  • Watering: Water deeply once a week, especially in dry periods. Check soil moisture to avoid overwatering.
  • Dividing and Splitting: Divide every 3-4 years in early spring to maintain vigour and spread.
  • Winter Protection: Mulch in late autumn to protect roots from frost.
